Your hair looks thick and straight-ish, so I think you can use literally any product and it will work well. Gel will hold it back, which is a great option when you're growing it out.
BUT I personally like STYLING CREAM, like Rusk Radical Hair Cream. It's supposed to be a thickening cream, but I think it provides really great hold (ie, keeps your hair in place), AND keeps your hair soft (unlike gel).
Apply a small amount to wet hair, then comb it back and let it air dry. After an hour, run your fingers through your hair to get rid of the "wet" look. Your hair will stay back, look good, and remain soft.
Wearing it back while its growing out will help you get through the awkward stage. Then when it's long enough you can just go natural.
