Hi Jacob,
I also have naturally curly hair, it's just below my shoulder blades and quite heavy so the weight tends to stop it from going crazy curly;
Anyway, I used to have a real issue with knotty hair, even matted hair so here are some tips I've procured.

#1 brush it once a day, maybe more if necessary - find a decent hairbrush with thick bristles, I keep one in the shower, I brush my hair when it's soaked so it doesn't pull my scalp so much.

#2 use the right product - use hair product designed for your hair type (thick/thin etc), get anti-frizz spray, John Frieda do a good one, speaking of John Freida, they do a product that unwinds curls, this is good if you have extremely curly hair and don't like it.

[I personally love my curly hair so...] #3 learn to plait - Plaiting your hair is the best tip I can give you, it trains your hair to sit in individual curly strands; honestly, the results are stunning
plait it when slightly damp, you can leave it in all day or overnight for amazing looking hair the next day
