HI,
I've had long hair for about 2 years now. In the past month or so, It has become knotted and the knot is getting bigger.
Is my only recourse to cut it off? If so, I'm going to have to cut the rest of it too as it's going to look bad to have long hair on my sides but not in the back, where the knot is.
I'd be curious to hear if there's any other recourse. Thanks.
Pic hopefully attached.
Cheers,
John
Been there, done that.
There are basically two options, one would be to attempt to untangle. (I've found that impossible to do.) The other is to
cut the knot off. I had to do that several times. Your best bet is to attempt to avoid them. That is one of the reasons I ended up having to chop off about eight inches of hair.
Thanks. I think I'm going to have to cut it all off. Gonna try the bald look. Worth a try.
Me thinks this is BS!
I don't have this problem because my hair is fairly straight with just a few waves, and curls at the ends. Yours is very frizzy and fine. There might be some kind of shampoo or oil that would enable tangles to be undone. I'm sure someone must know what's on the market. Do you have a wife or partner who could patiently untangle it. It can't be any more difficult than fishing line or the ropes on my boat! :) I hope you don't have to cut it.

Thanks. Alas, I live alone and don't have anyone to help me out on this. I think it may be too late for oils and shampoos to come to the rescue. I'm more curious if it can be cut and not look weird. We'll see soon...
You don't need another person. You have been provided with a couple of great options, why not try them?
It will be more difficult to cut the knot, than to pour some oil into your hands... and rub it on your hair.
Buy a good conditioner for hair. Wet your hair and put a lot of conditioner on the knot. Let it soak in for several minutes. Then use your fingers to gently work the knot out.
I had long hair teased and styled into a french knot for my brother's wedding. And this is exactly the remedy my hair dresser gave for undoing it. This is how women always undid teased hair styles. The conditioner makes the hair very slippery, if you use one containing silicone, that's even better.
Good to know, thanks!
Interesting. I'll look into it. Good to see there's a possible solution.
This does not have to be cut off. My son had full-on dreadlocks for two years, and over the course of several days and the use of copious amounts of olive oil, my wife was able to comb them out. Your knot isn't nearly as difficult as that. With a bit of patience and good oil, you should be able to carefully detangle it, first with fingers, then with a comb, starting at the tips and working towards the scalp. Good luck!

Worth a try, thanks!
Well. I did it. I had it cut off. I tried untangling it with Suave Detangler, the only product my local supermarket had to detangle hair. It might have worked a little but I couldn't see for myself and it got tiring fast.
So, I went to a barber shop. I could have looked for a hair saloon that might have been more able to untangle it but didn't want to look around alot. I asked, there, could you untangle it and everybody said no. So I decided to try the bald look.
I like that too.
My hair will grow back. I'll try to keep it from untangling in the future.
Thanks for you all the good suggestions here. I appreciate them.
Cheers,
John
Sorry to hear the detangling didn't work for you, but at least it sounds like you're happy with getting a fresh start, too. Based on the picture you shared, it looks like hair with your texture would benefit from frequent brushing throughout the day to remain untangled, generous conditioning, as well as "protective" hairstyles (ponytail, braid, etc.). Good luck, and keep us posted!

Thanks. What's a good conditioner? I was using Pantene 2 in 1, which is a shampoo and conditioner which, apparently, didn't work out well for me.
