Hi,
I am new to the board and have a question? My stylist of 11 years recently trimmed 10 inches of my hair when I had requested 4 inches. She said she made a mistake because I was sitting and not standing. She has never done this in the past. Would you give her another chance in the future? My hair was below my belt before the trim. She is a kind person, but her mistake troubles me.

Hey James,
I would not go to anyone for a trim until you recover the hair you lost. You say that she cut off ten (10) ins. Bro, that's twenty (20) months of growth. I would check with other guys who have their hair trimmed by this stylist. I would also think about not getting anymore trims, period.
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
10 inches is a lot, and I'm just not buying the "sitting and not standing". But I'm curious as to why you requested 4 inches? That's 4 to 6 months of growth. Are you trying to keep it at a specific length? A trim should only involve the 1/4 to 1/2 in ends of the hair, unless you have worn and/or split ends. I've been trimming/cutting my own hair for nearly 20 years, saves me money, and I get what I want done. Personally, I would not go back to this stylist, 10 inches isn't just a simple mistake, that's enough to donate to a charity for wigs. I'd find another stylist, and be very clear as to how much you want trimmed.
Hi Carol,
I want to thank you and everyone for your input. I wanted to trim 4 inches just to shorten the length a little. I get my hair trimmed twice a year, and have been maintaining a length. I usually trim 3 inches every six months.

I have not so much as trimmed a split end in over 10 years. I just let it maintain at its full natural length which is currently over 3 feet.

4 inches is 4 inches whether you are sitting or standing.
There is quite a difference between 4 inches and 10 inches and
it seems anybody in the hair cutting business should be able
to tell the difference.
I've found, by and large, that stylists do what they want, never mind what the customer wants.
A stylist doing this would be akin to a house painter painting the house purple when the home owner requests white. Or a car sales man selling you a red car when you specifically requested a blue one. You wouldn't tolerate that in either situation, why would you tolerate it from a hair stylist? I'm surprised that it is tolerated, that more stylists don't get sued for making these mistakes. Do these stylists decide what you get before you even sit down in the chair? After all it's obvious they are not listening to the customer.
Hey James,
Not actually being there when this cut was done you could say there was miscommunication but if you said four and got ten she must have been using a rubber ruler!Should you decide to trust her again I would make sure you have a detailed conversation about what you want and make her repeat it.At this point you should just skip trims anyway for at least two years to reclaim what you lost.Personally I stopped all hair trims and maintain my terminal length which is mid back.Cheers

She may be a kind person but she is not a good stylist.
I'd find a new one that you can trust.
James,
I feel your pain. I have had to keep my hair very short for work purposes; however as I got close to retirement I began letting it get longer. My stylist, who has been cutting my hair for decades simply could not make the change to a longer cut that I was wanting and consistently cut my hair short despite telling him at every visit that I wanted it longer. I finally had to cut him loose. Long story short, I retired 2 years ago and haven't had it so much as trimmed since.
Hi Neal,
Sorry to hear that your stylist kept cutting your hair to short. I will most likely do the same and avoid trims for the next couple of years.
James
Nope.
BTW, I always cut my own hair now. See "Feye's Hair Self-Trimming Instructions" in the MLHH Links section:
