I apologize for my lack of participation lately. I have to say that I've been enthused to see the recent burst of activity both from new members and also old-timers! It inspired me to make a little update of my own.
I gave up (again!) on my quest for terminal length. I've been having my wife trim a few inches off every six months or so. It's been a few months from the last one and I've been noticing my hair definitely feeling longer again. If I had coarse hair, I'd without question follow through but my fine hair is frustrating to deal with. I just enjoy being a longhair regardless and having fresh ends has its benefits as well. Who knows? I might try again at some point.
I don't really have any "progress" photos so I'll just post a kind of "artsy" one I took not too long ago and a family picture. We continue to give our son free rein over his hair length. He's been adamant that he wants to keep it long. My wife gave him a trim shortly after the family photo was taken and it was cut a bit shorter than he actually wanted but it's still pretty long. It'll be back to the length in the photo pretty soon.
Let's keep the participation going!
Jason

From early December.
Hi Jason,
This is a great picture of what would be nice if more families
had the courage to push the limits of what society dictates. It's hard to put a finger on it but I'm assuming longhair on men is sort of accepted nowadays even though its still not the norm.It boils down to what the individual wants in regards to hair length. As long as those who want longhair can grow it out without persecution it would be a much nicer world.Happy to see you post again, maybe a trend is developing ;) Cheers

Nice to hear from you, Jason, and to see you and your kin happy together in your family. I have followed through with the journey from when we first corresponded in early 2014.
To Mark Hairball, you suggest that "maybe a trend is developing". I hope not, except in terms of tolerating persons as we and they are. I would hate to see long hair become a fashion, because a lot of it would end up on barbershop floors when the fashion changes. I see long hair as a reward for our asserting our freedom of individual persons, the so-called "nobility of the spirit".
We dream of making progress with those whose functioning consists of following an ideology or "herd instinct". There are still people who believe the earth is flat! We can't do much about them, but we can have the courage to lead our lives according to principles of reason, freedom and spiritual aspiration.
Anthony
Hi Anthony,
I totally agree with you about not actually wanting to see longhair on men become a new fashion trend. As you pointed out those kind of trends are short lived and in the case of hair it would eventually be cut off.My reference about a trend possibly developing was more geared towards a renewed interest in the mlhh based on its recent uptick in activity :)That is really what I meant. Have a great weekend Anthony. Cheers
Mârk
I am greatly encouraged to see more traffic on this board, and I do my best to give it some philosophical input as well as send in the occasional hair selfies. This trend is obviously a good one, and we seem to be able to deal with the wrong people perfectly well. All that's great - ad multos annos!
Anthony
Hi Anthony,
It's always nice to have a new member first show up and then stick with us as they take their journey to becoming a longhair. I've enjoyed following your amazing progress and to read your interesting insights into the process as well. You're definitely an asset here at MLHH!
Jason
Hi Mark,
Thanks! I do believe there's a trend towards more acceptance with how boys want to wear their hair. My son has had longhaired boys with him both in daycare and in now in kindergarten.
Best,
Jason
Great family picture Jason!
I too have been too long sitting on my hands, not participating.
I also have fine hair so I understand totally the extra care/hassle involved. Achieving terminal length would be quite an accomplishment, but just keeping a good length of long hair still earns you bragging rights.
Bruce
Thanks, Bruce, and it's great to see you back as well! I'm glad to hear that your wife has come to accept you as a longhair.
Do you get trims for your fine hair?
Best,
Jason
Hi Jason, yes I have trimmed. I let it grow without trmming for a few years and I achieved butt length, which I enjoyed, but I had to braid all the time or the tangles were horrible. Now its at mid back and I trim when I feel the need.
Bruce
What a superb family photo!!!!!!!
Your wife has a gorgeous smile -- and she reminds me of (and looks somewhat similar to) my favorite Swing dance instructor, a woman by the name of Michelle Kinkaid (who won the US National Swing Dance Championship several times, during several different years, including "Jack and Jill" dance contests -- which essentially means luck-of-the-draw spontaneous lead & follow). There's a fair # of YouTube videos with her dancing, if you ever care to check out what West Coast Swing (our official California state dance) looks like...
Now how the heck did I ever get onto THAT subject?? (LOL)
- Ken
Hi Ken,
Thanks for the kind words about the photo and my wife's smile. It was nice to get our family pictures taken outside by a professional this year as against inside in a studio. I think everyone was more relaxed.
Best,
Jason
Your little fella looks fantastic Jason! A really nice picture.
What is the story of this establishment? Has it been around a long time and are you one of its creators Jason? I am a complete newcomer and just found the site by chance a few weeks ago.
It has a good vibe.
Thanks El Nico!
MLHH first started around 1997 I believe. My first post was way back in 1999. At first the moderators were anonymous but for about the last 15 years or so, they've been named. I've been one for about 8 years now. Our format has remained unchanged. It's kind of a relic from the early days of the Internet but it has a certain charm that way. Good to have you aboard!
Jason
Thanks Jason. Still trying to get my head around the format, the big puzzle is that there seems no set place for new posts, at the moment it seems that they can appear anywhere and you just have to keep scrolling down the list. The penny will eventually drop I guess :-)
Hi, for better wiew of new posts, click on "thread wiew" at the top (where all the links are)
http://www.mlhh.org/threadview.html
on the left you can see topics sorted by last activity (last post), while on the normal wiew they are sorted by date of initial post.
So if a very old topic get a new message, it will show on top.
yes i'm new here, this is my first post, i will make a personnal presentation in the future.
Thanks Zak, look forward to it.
Now I can instantly identify new posts, in Firefox old posts show up in
a purple color, while new unread posts show up in blue. I'm not sure if that is Firefox's doing or if it originates with MLHH. I think that started occuring several years ago. I haven't tried it in other browsers.
As you know, I stepped down on my activity quite some time ago, but I have to say that it's great to see some of the old timers stopping in an updating us as to how they been doing. It almost seems like the "good old days" of the MLHH. It was actually Ken's post the other day that brought me out of the woodwork, sonto speak.
That has to be the nicest family photo of the three of you, and you are genuinely blessed, and have so much to be proud of. Your son's hair is coming along very well indeed, and it's cool that he's embraced long hair. It's great that you and your family are doing well. Thank you for sharing.
I gave up on a long terminal length ages ago. At least it's a decent length and thickness, and I'm quite content with what I have.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Thanks for your kind comments!
I've been wondering how you've been so it's wonderful to see you pop up and to hear that you're continuing to enjoy retirement. Have you been able to get your walks in even in the winter? We had a ridiculous cold snap about a month ago that last for about 2 weeks. It's moderated now. Except on the coldest days and when there's been too much snow, I've been able to continue my cycling through most of it. I bet you're looking forward to that first day back on the golf course!
Take care,
Jason
Hi Jason,
There hasn't been a day when I've missed my walks this winter, except for a few overly rainy days. We have had a remarkably open winter so far, and our first significant snowstorm wasn't until Monday, the 15th of January, probably the latest that I can remember. We had another storm a couple of days later, and I suspect the rest of the winter will be more normal, cold and snowy as it usually is.
About the cold snap, I did still manage to get my walks in, by bundling up was a necessity.
It's great to hear that not much is getting in the way of your cycling.
All the best,
David
Very nice !! Thanks for Sharing.
Walter
Thanks Walter! It's nice to see so many members pop back in!
I can still remember when you posted that you met your wife for the first time and when your son was born.
It's great to see you together being happy, keep up the good work!
Great family picture. Congrats. I envy you a bit because my wife does not accept my long hair and obviously refuses to take pictures with me....So sad....
Thanks! I'm sorry about your wife not accepting you with long hair. It's possible that with even more time she'll come around. I was fortunate because I had already had long hair when I met my wife and she liked it from the beginning. Hang in there!
Killer abs you got there, Jason -- and definitely a nice "artsy" photo!!
In my dreams, I have a flat stomach with well-defined muscles, just like you do... But then, unfortunately, I wake up and take a look in the mirror: "Hey, who invited Santa Claus into my house -- and why is he staring back at me in my bathroom mirror?"
I know, I know... less chocolate chip cookies, and a LOT more exercise! (LOL)
Hey Ken
My mirror is even more sarcastic than yours.....you see I think I look like Brad Pitt, but I look in the mirror and see Don Rickles !! Gasp !!
Walter
Why, thanks, Ken! Fitness I've found to be a positive addiction and when the routine is locked in, it kind of becomes a way of life.
I got a good laugh out of your reply and your humor has been missed along with your presence!
Hi Jason,
Nice to see another update from you, great that we could inspire you to post again!
I've also like that we have some sort of reunion, let's see if we can bring the board back to the former glory.
Great that you can enjoy the hair you've got, you cannot choose your hair type so it's a lesson to learn to enjoy what you've got. Even so you have really nice hair, I always enjoyed seeing your hair. And who knows what to future will bring.
You look in good shape, I was in very good shape 5 years ago but the last couple of years I've slacked off a bit. I should really pick it up again, I really enjoy sports and the health benefits do not lie.
It's great your son can enjoy his hair how he likes it, it will be interesting to see how his hair develops as he gets older. I used to have blond hair when I was a kid, when I got older my hair got a lot darker.
Vincent
Thanks Vincent! I agree that ones hair type is a comparatively minor quibble. Having hair is the most important thing!
I do my best to stay fit both for the physical and mental benefits. I had a wake-up call of sorts when I turned 38 and knew I needed to get serious about turning things around. Permanently. The combination of cycling and strength training seems to work well. Ive been trying to emphasize having a strong core as it helps in all other areas to prevent injury and just feel good. What is your routine? What sports are your favorites?
Yeah, my sons hair has already darkened quite a bit but its nice that hes been able to enjoy it long while it has still been blond.
Thats awesome your girlfriend both likes your hair and has long hair herself. Hers must be very thick to experience issues with its weight!
Take care,
Jason
Hi Jason,
I agree having hair is the most important, I started getting my first grey hairs when I was 18 but I still have a full head of hair :)
At the moment my only sport is indoor climbing and bouldering.
Once a week I go climbing and once a week bouldering.
I like it a lot and my strenght has improved a lot.
I used to do a lot of running but after a knee injury I stopped. My endurence is lacking at the moment and Ive gained some weigth. I really like to start running again but Im afraid for injuries.
Her hair is not thick but she has a lot of hair. The issues were mostly there when wearing her hair in a bun. But because of the length a bun was what she had most often. Now she has a ponytail or wears it loose.
That's cool that you're into climbing and bouldering. I tried rock climbing once many years ago with a friend who was already into it. It just kind of freaked me out especially the part about being responsible to belay another person. I have great admiration for climbers though. I read Alex Honnold's book. It's just incredible that he was able to free solo El Capitan in Yosemite!
I used to run and I've always loved it but, like you, I experienced injuries - both to my knees and feet. That's the beauty of cycling. You can really hammer hard without the pounding from running. I almost never get injuries related to it. I'll still run on occasion when the weather or road conditions prevent me from cycling. I have the aerobic engine to do lots of it but I have to be very careful with not overdoing it and getting an injury.
As for hair, I agree that some gray is not a concern. I still don't have much in my head hair but have gray in my beard now. We're blessed to not be affected by the ravages of MPB.
I use the bicycle for transportation, but not as sport.
I tried a race bicycle for a few months but got a lot of pain in my neck and butt.
I love the low weigth and how fast you can go but couldnt deal with the discomfort.
Have you tried a mountain bike?
A recumbent bike?
Ive done a lot of mountainbiking in the past, although there are no mountains in Holland. The highest point in my province is 46mtrs, still a challenge to bike there though.
My absolute highlight was mountainbiking in New Zealand, ive done some downhill mountainbiking when I was there. Very scary but a big thrill.
We didnt have money for the gondola so we biked up there twice, going down was a lot quicker.
Never tried a recumbrant bike, did you?
The nice thing about Mountain bikes is they're great in the city too.
Actually i have. Back in the 1980s our group built a human powered
vehicle to race in California. (No we didn't win, didn't break the record.) A number of people there built their own recumbant bikes.
For the city I have a normal bike which I like a lot, my mountainbike is only for off-road.
When Im sporting I like to be in nature not in the city or on asfalt.
Nice bike, I guess you can go really fast with the lower wind resistance.
The nice thing about a mountain bike in the city is it's better for pot hole season (it's winter here, we'll get pot holes alot.)
Mountain bikes are also good on the many roads that are in tough shape. (After the severe winters we've had it would take billions of dollars to fix all the roads old man winter has done a job on. The states don't have the money to do it hence the bad roads.)
(Think about temperatures going above freezing then going below freezing at night, plus steel snow plows, plus ice, etc. all contribute to bad roads.)
I hear ya. I've got fine hair and get crazy split ends. I get a trim every twelve weeks or so, because if I don't I can't even get a comb through to the ends.
