Does putting bleached streaks in your hair really damage it?
A lot of women seem to carry it off without much of a problem, if you condition regularly Im not sure its that bad a deal? Right now Im 8 months into growing it out again and last time around I must have bleached it around 5 times and things seemed okay.
Any thoughts?
Hi,
I am no expert but I have heard that coloring and especially bleaching is hard on your hair. You may have to trim it more often due to split and brittle dry ends.

Earlier this summer I had some highlights put into my hair (the first time I've attempted any dying or highlighting). I was concerned about the damage from both bleaching and then dying the highlights in... but frankly, nothing notable has changed in my hair texture or softness. Though I am a stickler for regular washing, conditioning, and good products and my highlights were put in with foils, so not too excessive of bleaching.
The concern I have moving forward is deciding if I want to add/update my highlights now that I have more growth. Or I could all over dye the highlights out to my natural color (or even some shade near-natural). Or just let them grow out... Decisions, decisions.

Hey Cameron,
I'm glad to see you post again.
Of course it is your call as to what you are going to do with your hair. Could you post a pic to show what your hair looks like now?
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
A lot depends on what your natural color is, and how much lighter you are going. Bleaching or dying hair significantly lighter than its normal shade, can damage hair. Hair can become brittle and break. If you are doing subtle highlights only a few shades lighter than your natural color, you should be okay.
After bleaching or lightening, to restore moisture in the hair shaft, and repair any damage, consider using a hair masque. You can buy packets or use a recipe to make your own (Avocados are popular). This deep conditions the hair. I've highlighted for many, many years, and avoided damage by deep conditioning.
As long as you are taking the necessary steps to keep your hair from becoming dry & brittle, you should be fine.
Thanks for the reply (all).
Hi El Nico,
Is your hair bleached at all in your avatar photo? If you have bleached it 5 times in 8 months with no problem, I would say you must be doing something right! I don't think streaking or highlighting is as bad as bleaching the whole head of hair. In your avatar it looks kind of cool though.
I am going to post my 1 year update photo in October. Hopefully my hair will look as good as yours! Looking forward to your next update my friend! Please take care of yourself!
Stay close, Ted
Hi Ted, thanks for the reply, times going quickly, one year in Oct!
Ive just passed past the 8 month mark, coming along nicely, in 2 months Im hoping to be able to tie it up again.
I put bleached streaks in last time around, over the 2 years. I have natural white streaks now :-) so im going to see how they look this time before deciding on bleaching again!
Take it easy.
