Well a couple weeks ago I cut my long damaged hair down to about 2-3" with a #8 comb on a hair buzzer with the intention to grow it out longer and healthier than it was. That is still the plan and now I'll be going through the awkward phase for the third time in my life. I have a couple problematic thin areas on my scalp that I'm trying to cleanse now, but what I've found to be a useful product for volume is the texture paste linked-it gives volume to the hair around thin areas. I've been using this for a couple weeks and like it. You just need a little and I put it in while my hair is dry, finger comb it in and then I get my fingers wet and smooth the surrounding areas into it. It seems to just wash out with warm water as it is water based.

Rodante Texture PasteHey Marty,
I'm glad that you have found a product which will cleanse your scalp and promote greater thickness for your hair. Keep us up to date with pics as to how it is working for you.
Perhaps you can help me. I have been growing my hair for almost eight (8) years. My hair is barely shoulder length. It used to be nipple length. I have fine hair with a little wave to it. I think that the ends break off. What can I do to encourage further growth?
Thanks!
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Well, I've been told by my sister in law hair stylist who isn't telling me this to pad her pocket that hair that isn't getting any longer over the years but actually getting shorter is due to damaged hair that is splitting at a rate that's quicker than your growth rate which is typically 1/2" a month. So, that damage needs to be dealt with. I tried repairing the damage and putting down the hair dryer but didn't see my hair get longer over 8 months, so I decided to do the rash thing and cut my hair short. My sister in law couldn't believe I did that but that's the way I am but I first had to see it to believe it.
I first watched a bunch of videos on YouTube where people with long hair were identifying their split ends (I saw 3 methods-1 was twisting hairs and the other 2 had to do with combing till you hit a snag at the end) and cutting right above those splits. Typically they're on the ends so you wouldn't cut much more than a 1/4" but mine had traveled at least six inches up my head or it was layered. It was a mess and I couldn't cut that close to the back of my head without a buzzer...so I decided to just start over. I think if youre hair isnt layered then its easier to care for your hair yourself just by cutting the last 1/4" but mine may have been layered and the splits were all over the place and my eyes arent keen enough anymore to just cut the splits if theyre not in the same spot. Plus my hair isnt as thick as the video I attached.
My sister in law's advice now for me is to get regular trims every 6-8 weeks to prevent new split hairs from spreading. I'm not sure about the frequency of those trims-I think if you're doing everything to prevent splits in the first place than you can double or triple those routine trims to 4-6 months.
So, Raymond start out by just seeing if you have damaged hair. If you do then what you do next is up to you. If it's not that much than you can just trim them yourself with a pair of hair scissors that have never cut paper. If it's real bad then I have seen plenty of products claiming to repair damaged hair.
One of the videos I watched is attached.

How To Get Rid Of Split Ends WITHOUT affecting length

Raymond, back in May I started wondering if my hair was still growing because if it wasn't than I wouldn't have buzzed my head a couple weeks ago. What I did was shave a test area (above my ears) to find out because the area above my ears seemingly stayed short at 2". After shaving I kept it moisturized with oils and watched it grow over months and it got over the initial 2" at 2/3" a month. A couple weeks ago I figure I'd be back to shoulder length hair in 13 months if my entire head grew hair that way. I attached my 13 month picture from 2002.
So, maybe you should first find out your growth rate.
Marty

That's almost the length I had after 18 1/2 years but it was a lot fuller in 2002.
I attached another picture of how long my hair had gotten almost 2 years later. So over 16 years I lost almost 2 years of growth due to neglect.
Marty
Marty,
Thanks for the pic and for the advice. I will post a pic and I will see to my split ends.

Hey Marty,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I like the pic you have included. You said that this pic is from 2002? What does your hair look like now?
I suspect that my hair is damaged. I suspect that I have split ends. My hair used to grow out at a rate of approximately 1/2 in. per month. I have not had a trim since Aug., 2017. This is because there is a dude by the name of Jeremy who issued a challenge to all guys who wanted to grow out their hair. He said that as of Sept. 5, 2017 he challenged all guys to not cut their hair for two (2) years. At the end of that time they should be beyond the awkward stage and their hair should be approximately twelve (12) inches long. I accepted his challenge. I had some hairs growing from the left rear side of my head which were just about touching my pacemaker. I just tested my hair and they were just above my pacemaker. I thought that I was losing length. I thought that I was losing length. I thought that I might have reached terminal length. Nevertheless, I am sure that my hair will continue to grow. I am thinking about giving up on Jeremy's challenge and going back to getting my hair trimmed by 1/4 in. every two (2) months. You can access Jeremy on instagram at thetruejeremy. The stylist to whom I used to go is about ninety-five (95) miles away. I was giving some thought as to whom I could go to in whose hands I would entrust my hair. I will post a pic of my hair in the next couple of days or so.
I like to finger comb my hair and then to comb it out with a wide toothed comb.
I will try getting my hair trimmed about 1/4 in. every two (2) months and see what difference that makes.
Watch for my hair pic on the hyperboard.
