: I've been using this DIY flaxseed hair gel with argan and peppermint oils added (seeds get taken out after boiling and producing the gel). I came across a link that describes how to make this gel but simmering for 40 minutes. I made it and it's not as thick as a typical hair gel and reminds me of stuff I bought in the 80's that was watery but gave a hold and wet look.

: Anybody know what it was? I was a kid then and didn't pay attention to things like brands, labels or ingredients. Not too much to go on except what I said-it left a wet look and gave some hold. A bit thicker than water and was sold in a plastic squeeze bottle.

: Here's how to make the stuff and what I did. I used coconut water instead of distilled water.

: 2 cups of coconut water
: 1 cup filtered water
: 3/8 cup golden flaxseeds
: 21 drops argan oil
: 21 drops peppermint oil

: In a pot bring the coconut water and filtered water to boiling. Add flaxseeds and simmer 40 minutes. Sieve through fine metal mesh and then put resulting liquid into 3 glass containers. Add 7 drops argan oil to each glass container while hot and stir. When cool add 7 drops of peppermint oil to each container and stir again. Put the top on and place 2 containers in the freezer. Keep the other capped container in the refrigerator.

: It's only supposed to last 2 weeks without any preservative but the peppermint oil seems to keep it from going bad because 1 container lasts me about 3 weeks (my hair is only 3-4 inches long) and has never gone bad. That's why I freeze 2/3 of it. This produces enough for 2 months.

: I apply it from root to ends of the hair with my hands and then brush it through with a detangling wet brush. Don't touch your hair much till air dry. It will still looks wet but feels stiff so try to get it to soften gently with your fingers. I found it adds volume but doesn't flake.

: If you want more of a hold then supposedly brown flaxseeds do this. Less liquid too. The other recipe I followed said do this 10 minutes and that produced a thicker liquid.

I did a search on the current leave in products and nothing rang a bell as to what the name of the 80's leave in wet look stuff was called. So I'm just gonna tell people that I'm putting flaxseed juice in my hair!
