I work in an executive setting, and have for about a year and a half.
That means a three piece suit or some equivalent every day.
The cool thing is that I wear my hair down and never have gotten any grief over it, which I'm grateful for, especially in this environment. I occasionally get a dirty look from one of the older, gray haired execs, who is much more conservative, but that's not the kind of people in my division.
Anyway, in going back and answering the other part of Q2, I remembered something that's helped me.
I WAS getting nervous about my hair's appearance, 'cause I had that less than attractive flip going on through out the growing stages, which drove me crazy, and really looked bad with the exec look.
So Franco, my hairdresser, when I told him the prob, fixed it.
When he trims my ends, about every three months or more, he BLUNT CUTS the ends.
Then, he blows the hair curling it under. No more flip, and my hair looks great, very styled that fits in with the slick look I need for the board room.
So what about at home? At first, I was having a hard time copying the look, and I'd end up with the flip again, which really bothered me, but it was due to the way I was blowing it.
I've finally got it figured out, where the ends always curl under naturally, so I don't get that flip.
With my head tilted over to one side, (actually, I bend from the hip),
I brush all the hair in back towards the floor, so it's hanging straight down.
Then I take my hair blower and blow into the hair from the side, not the front or back.
If it's laying like this:
HEAD \\\\\\\\\ and the \ is the hair hanging down, then I blow to
the right, always blowing from the side instead of from the front of back. Same for the opposite side:
//////// HEAD Blow to the left.
What I've found this does with a blunt cut is that it helps the hair naturally turn under, instead of flipping out. When I'd blow from the front or back I'd still get that yucky flip. By the way, I don't use a hairbrush, just my fingers, and not very much at all during this part.
I usually switch back and forth once after the initial drying, and then once the hair is pretty much drier, then I straighten my head and blow it as regular, then use my cold-air setting all over to cool off the hair.
It works, and at least in this corporate setting, it looks good enough to keep me out of hot water.

Twas the night before styling
and all through the board
the posters were typing messages

but before I responded

of which I finally became aware,
I flipped off my pc and
thanked God for my hair.

Military loosens hair guidelines for spiritual reasons
Natives in the Canadian military will soon be allowed to wear their hair long, if they can prove it's part of their spiritual beliefs.
The hair will be allowed in either a single or double braid, or long to the edge of the shirt collar.

Hi! I have white/blond hair that is mid-back length in the back and short in the front. These little hairs always stick up, is there any way to get rid of them without the greasy look? I'm only 15 so I have a limited budget. Does anybody have any links on people with this color and length of hair?
Having read through the concerns of long haired men about getting jobs with long hair and also the questions regarding how the employer accepts their employee's long hair in the Long Hair Survey on the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard, I wonder whether there is some kind of organisation of long haired men which will fight for their human right to have long hair without dicrimination.
I believe most long haired men who post their comments and questions on the Hyperboard are from North America where I believe there are constitutional rights to protect the human right of the individual to have long hair.
I have not however heard of such an organisation in North America, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, which makes me wonder why long haired men have not formed some sort of organisation to defend their rights.
Hey look, the civil rights movement among the Blacks have won them some protection against discrimination.
The women have fought for some kind of equality. The gays and lesbians have won some protection agains discrimination.
So why don't long haired men form some organisation such as a long haired men's union or association to fight for acceptance and protect themselves against discrimination?
After all, long haired men protested against the war in Vietnam, engage in pretty heroic efforts to defend the environment and so on but why not to defend themselves against discrimination?

since I've noticed a few threads reoccur on a regular basis, I was
wondering if a FAQ was in order for this board specifically, and long
hair on men in general? I volunteer to research and compile the FAQ,
provided that Victor is okay with the idea of it then being me writing
"The Men's Long Hair FAQ" which he can then use freely.
incidentally, I've noticed a tendency of FAQs which have questions
which are not frequently asked by any stretch of imagination, and so
for starters I'd like to suggest the following questions which I've
noticed either being beaten to death or just being re-asked once a
month or so:
1) How do I grow my hair long?
2) How do I encourage my boyfriend/husband to grow his hair long?
3) What long hair styles look good on men?
4) How will my boss (or future boss) feel about long hair?
5) Do men with long hair get unwanted attention from gay/bisexual men?
my starter answers (which of course need development and feedback,
which is why I'm posting :) are:
1. Don't cut it.
No, seriously, normal hair grows six inches per year, with each
hair having a lifespan of four-seven years before falling out and
being replaced with a new hair. However, if you dye, perm, bleach,
spray, gel or tease your hair, about half the growth will be weak and
split. Also, your hair may not be "normal" by that definition, and
grow faster or slower, or have longer or shorter maximum lengths.
The hardest period of time to get through is when the majority of
your hair reaches someplace along your shoulder-blades. It constantly
falls in your face, won't stay in a ponytail, your friends will remind
you of how awkward it looks and you'll really wonder if it's worth it.
It is. Once it gets past that length, you can use some method such as
keeping it trimmed at mid-back until all your hair is even, or
something similar, but once you get it past your shoulder-blades, it's
incredibly easy to manage, looks gorgeous and feels wonderful. If you
need encouragement while it's in the awkward length, most of the
people here will be happy to give some.
The most awkward hairs to grow long are the front (bangs). Common
tricks for dealing with medium lengths on these hairs are hats,
bandannas, a part extremely on one side which at least limits how much
of your face is obscured (plus can look very hot when you need to
brush it back with your hand every ten minutes--very enjoyably
distracting to most anyone attracted to men), or minimal amounts of
mousse or hairspray.
Many hair products claim to strengthen hair and/or help it grow,
and some of them are even telling the truth. There doesn't seem to be
any difference between what works well on male or female hair, and the
same products are most popular with both genders. The brand you'll
hear mentioned most often is Pantene Pro-V, with V-05, Citre, Aveda
and Infusium-23 also quite popular amoung long-hairs. Don't shampoo
every day, and condition either whenever you shampoo or every other
time you shampoo. Once you like a product, stick with it--while the
effectiveness of these hair products seem to be about the same,
varying only from person to person, constantly changing what you put
in your hair is an effective way to keep it from growing quickly.
Finally, the other very effective method to get your hair long is
by getting permanent braids or dreadlocks. If you do this, after your
hair falls out, it stays connected with the attached hairs, and will
continue to increase the length of "your hair" if not having anything
to do with the rate of growth or the lifespan of each hair. The world
record-holders for longest hair are two brothers with 17-foot locks in
Thailand, who wash their hair once a year with fabric softener, with
the understandable result that it's all matted into one long clump.
Obviously, most of it fell out years ago and is just attached to the
hair which hasn't.
(Incidentally, does anybody know what is the record for longest
*growing* hair on a man?)
2. First, compliment them on it. Men are persuaded by attention and
kind words at least as effectively as women (usually more, since men
often aren't used to people commenting on their appearance).
Next, get them talking with men who enjoy having long hair, such
as The Men's Long Hair Hyperboard. Hearing someone who's been there
and has encouragement for what you're doing works wonders.
3. Most people agree that loose, braids and ponytails look good, plus
many people have their own preferences. If you check out some of the

Since perms can being very damaging to hair, many people recommend
roller sets to create curls, which only last few days, but don't do
any noticeable damage to the hair.
4. Of course, this varies from employer to employer, but the common
threads are that employers don't usually mind long hair, just having
their customers see umkempt styles, and that if you give in a little
bit, your boss will figure that they can dictate your appearance to
you. Therefore, keep your hair looking neat and professional, and if
your boss ever asks you to cut your hair, determine whether they are
refering to length or style, and if they are saying length, don't give
in even a little bit or you'll always give in.
Other good tips are:
Find a job where you don't have to see any customers face-to-face
on a daily basis.
Don't even discuss the issue with minimum-wage employers, just
realise that such jobs are dime-a-dozen, but people who will work hard aren't. If they think they can hold your job over you, let them know
they can't.
Don't remove length before a job interview. You'll just be
growing it back anyways, and it's much easier to find a job where they
know you have long hair than trying to grow long hair at a job when
they have a mental picture of you with short hair.
Don't even mention the law until your employer indicates that your
position may be affected, but the moment they even imply such a thing
bluntly state the the law is unequivicable on the subject of a
double-standard for appearance between men and women, and is without a
doubt gender-based harassment. The fact is that the legal process
will not get you anywhere, but will cause them at least as much pain
as it will you. But mentioning that you feel that your employer's
behaviour is discriminating against you to them will make your
workplace very hostile, especially if they feel they are in the right.
Find someplace to work which already employs long-haired men.
5. Not really. Most gay and bi men try to avoid hitting on straight
men at all costs, usually out of basic kindness and consideration
rather than fear of homophobia, and will often be as considerate as
they can on issues of sexuality. From my experience, when anyone
(gay, straight, or bi) is attracted to anyone else, but not sure about
their sexuality, they broach the subject very slowly and delicately.
And when a man compliments another man about their appearance, they
usually just compliment and then let it drop.

My hair is about chin length and I want to grow it down to about my shoulders. The problem is on the right side it curls up. On the other side its straight. Any tips on how to get the right side to stop curling up?
Well, it was going to happen sooner or later, and I'm starting to draw fire from my employer over my hair length, which is just about at my shoulders. Any thots? I can see an "edict" coming down fairly soon.

Okay...I guess I am going to ask a longly debated question. Will wearing a basecall style hat cause any forms of hair loss ? I was just courious. I do tend to put on a hat when I am running fire and ambuance calls, just to keep my hair out of my eyes.
There was an earlier post asking about contries where it is very common for men to wear long hair. I found out about a small town/city in Ecuador called Otavalo, from a couple of fellows that come from the place, all longhairs. The town is about two hours north of Quito, the capital. Aparently it has become quite a visited place because of art.
There most of the men, contrary to other regions in the country, the wear their hair long, waist-length and longer. This is a tradition that dates back a long time, I was told. So the men will be seen moving around with their terminal-length manes, and ever since they're quite young, boys have always worn long hair.
The "problem" now a days, so I was told by these folks, is that some young men don't value it start cutting it off in order to wear more "fashionable" styles. This obviously causes some grief in the family.
Thought I'd passe it on for if ever anyone goes to Ecuador, they might want to check out the place.

Recently in the local news it was announced that results from a recent dispute involving the Bastrop school district requiring a boy to cut off his long hair resulted in a decision by the Texas Supreme Court (I think) deciding in favor of the school district. I did a search for this news item (last week's news, I think) but could not find anything on the net about it. Hi, everyone! I just wanted to post a quick note to let you know you're going to be seeing brand new pics from me VERY soon. A friend of mine's dad baught a camcorder at a garage sale today, and my friend's going to bring it over to let me borrow it for a couple of days. He's got Snappy video capturing hardware/software which allows him to save video stills as .JPGs. I plan on having several vid-caps of myself done that will include some of the following:
* Front views with my hair down
* My back side with my hair down
* My back side with my hair in a ponytail (wearing my black velvet scrunchie)
* My back side with my hair in a ponytail (wearing my black satin ribbon)
* Several shots of me in day-to-day action, of which will have me wearing my hair down (I'm still debating whether or not to do these action shots).
* Possibly a few profile shots
I know at least a few of you have been wondering what my hair looks like from the rear, and I've finally got the most opportune moment to get some of those pics I've wanted done myself, without the hassle/expensive of more film and processing.

I first Posted a message on the board last July, stating that I had finally decided to let my Hair grow out. Being a 30 something Professional Male, This was not an easy decision to make, (but one I am exteremly happy with) based on the fact that it is not the accepted norm for people in my career field.
Its been growing pretty well. I feel like it must really be getting long, as the other day, a stranger asked me if I were a MUSICIAN..

Hi! A friend just jtrned me on to this site and I think its just great. Maybe some of you can help with my problem: my boyfriend has great hair, natural blond, down just below his shoulders, but he tks no care of it. wont let me. He thinks pulling it in a ponytail is 'girly' enough. I finally got him to let me french braid it (pinned up in back) for a party a couple of weeks ago and he got lots of complements. I'm trying to get him to let me roll it -- just know he'd look great. I've got an appointment scheduled at my salon next week, and I've told my hairdresser I want her to stick him him rollers - but he's still unwilling and i dontwant to embarass him. Any suggestions on getting him to let down his guard and try some 'girly' hairdos?

some days ago i saw a guy in his 20's dressed with shirt and tie at a public office library. They seemed like any other yuppie looking for info,. he seemed to be growing his beard, though. when he turned around i saw his hair was tied in a very long ponytail that reached below his mid-back. The people in the office didnt seem concerned about this. It looked great and clean!
Can men really have thigh length or knee length hair or is this just an expression? If so, it would be great to see some pictures of these lengths.
For the past couple of weeks or so, a late night infomercial has been playing here on the west coast. The subject is a folk/rock group called The Kelly Family. The group consists of a family of singers/musicians (I think there are nine of them) ranging in age from about 15 to 35, all brothers and sisters. Anyway, all of the guys have incredibly long, thick, beautiful hair. Check it out if you get a chance.
Yesterday a friend of mine and I were discussing reasons why far more
women than men grow their hair long, even in an area where socially,
people are allowed to do pretty much anything they want (we live in
Seattle...) and the best objective reason I could come up with is that
women don't have to deal with beards. (hence the punny subject)
Let's face it, a man with long hair is not scruffy and unkempt. A man
with a beard is not scruffy and unkempt. A man with long hair and a
beard has to work really hard to avoid being really scruffy.... and
shaving is a complete pain when you have long hair. Trimming is
nearly as much of a pain. But facial hair style which look fine on
someone with short hair (five-o-clock shadow, a shaggy goatee, a
well-brushed full beard) turn someone with long hair into Charlie
Manson.
Personally, I have a well-trimmed beard, which I have to make sure I
trim once a week, in addition to shaving the areas I don't want facial
hair (under my chin, middle of my cheek) once or twice a week, if I
don't want to look unprofessional. I know that if I had short hair,
half the attention to my beard would be as passable.
Thinking about this, I'm sure there are men out there who'd be more
willing to grow their hair longer if it didn't make for such a total
pain shaving or trimming a beard, and letting a beard grow out look so
incredibly unkempt.

I have been buzzing my hair very short for the past seven years, since it started to thin.
I wouold love to grow myhair long again, but am afraid that it will look like crap. I have a slightly receeding hairline, and generally thin all over.

I would like to get some feed back from guys who go to the salon toget a roller set. I am also bashful and want somes tips. I am wanting to go and find a place that will be comfortable and then make a regular habit of going.I enjoy setting my hair at home and do it about 3 or 4 times per week.
I have not set my hair for a long time,this website gets me to look for my rollers.I think that it is great to set hair in rollers.
I've been growing my hair for about 13 months (it was quite short; no longer than about 2"), and I've noticed that the hair around my balding temples seems to fall out & grow back more than the rest. There are many short hairs in those areas. My hair isn't long enough to tie back yet, but when it is, it seems to me those hairs would stick up and look funny. The guys I've seen who tie their hair back, even quite tightly, don't seem to have any such problem.
Have any of you experienced this? Any suggestions?
Having short bangs would take care of it just as well as when my hair was short, but I'm pretty sure I don't want the long-hair-with-short-bangs look.

I must, however, apologize for the lack of lighting on this one. The sun wasn't out at the time my friend and I were filming (btw: due to lack of a light bulb for the camcorder, every shot you see of me will be outdoors, preferably while the sun's out). My hair was shoulder lenghth...and it had been for a very long time. In being so, I have no idea, how long it takes to grow out to that length. I know hair grows at varying lengths, but can I get some input to get a general idea?

MON NGA, Thailand (AP) -- An 85-year-old Hmong tribesman in northern Thailand claims to having the longest hair in the world, with his closest rival being his 87-year-old brother.
Hoo Sateow, officially measured Friday by a judge from the Guinness Book of Records, hasn't shorn a lock on top for almost seventy years. It's now 17 feet 2 inches long.
"I cut it when I was 18 and I got really ill. So I decided I'd never do it again," he said. "Since then, I've been able to call up ghosts to help heal the sick." Fellow villagers in Chiang Rai province regard him as a shaman, or medicine man.
He said he washes his hair just once a year, using fabric cleaner, and dangles it on trellis work to dry it.
His older brother Yi, whose last haircut was in 1957, also bests the current record-holder, an Indian woman whose hair is about 13 feet 8 inches long.
The long hair may look both impractical and uncomfortable, says Hoo, but high in Thailand's cool mountains, it has advantages.
"I just wrap it up here and put my hat on top. It helps keep me warm,' he said.
Hoo says his locks will be cut only when he's dead. The village will then keep them as a totem.
"This is definitely a new record, unless there's somebody somewhere else in the world who's doing something similar with longer hair," said Adam Flinn, the judge for the Guinness record book.
I have platnum blonde hair and I'm letting it grow out but I have encountered a problem, it is hard to manage and it does this weird flip thing because I wear a hat all day so my classmates won't notice. would taking off my hat stop this. - The Home Economist, 1958-1965. I think this magazine went out of print after that, but there are some great bouffant styles and roller sets in every issue. They even have a "hairdo of the month".
- Old Mademoiselle, 1969-1975. This was when the big magnetic rollers (my personal preference) were used for straightening hair.
- Ladies Home Journal
Any other publications such as Woman's Day, Redbook and Cosmopolitan. Also, around 1965 or so was when the home hairdrying market was really established, so there are lots of cool ads with the big hood dryers.
I used to hang out in the big library we had in college and check these out. It's pretty scary what some people do with their spare time - it's amazing that I even graduated!

Do you find that men that have long hair have an attitude?
When I've in the past seen guys w/long hair, it seems that they have that "I'm just soooooo cool attitude"....Why??? Sure, they look good, but that kind of attitude just spoils everything. Any guys (straight) out there that are single (available) w/longhair, without an attitude? I very rarely see any guys around anymore with long hair.....
When I was having a shampoo and dry (I'm growing my hair now - its jusssst long enough for a pony tail) recently I asked the hairdresser if she could straighten the frizzy bit i have above my side burns. She said she could and put some straightening cream on it. Unfortunately it really damaged the small area she did. I cut that bit short... but it now is reaaaaaallly frizzy and looks damaged. Ive been covering it with the longer hair, and trying to condition it back to life... but it doesnt seem to help much.... Is there any help for this damaged bit, or do I have to just grow it out, cut that bit, and mark it down to experience...

In the section, "girls in rollers" you have picture of a girl getting a perm that was previously shown in Frizzo's as a boy getting a perm.
The question is not who was accurate-- I imagine only the boy/girl and the person taking the pic would know. The question(s) is what difference does it make? Obviously, if it's a boy (he has quite a lot of hair) does it mean something different that he/she is getting a perm. It must to those of us that are fascinated by 'curlers and curls'. But what is it? What about if some of the other pictures of girls with curlers were really transgenger males?

Hello there everybody,
I barely discovered the site a couple of days ago and this is my first post in the dicussion board (in ANY discussion board for that matter).
I will be finishing up a Ph.D. in food science shortly and will start looking for a job pretty soon. My hair is maybe a little lower than mid-back (elbow length, I get somewhat confused with the references to length) and my first degree was in chemical engineering and prior to graduate studies I worked in a very large multinational, but back then I didn't have this hair length whatsoever, it was layered and just below the collar.
Now, before finding this site, I had planned to cut it off as I will start with interviews sometime early next year. But in relating to what some of you guys have "said" very honestly and openly (at least it seems to me) about your own hair and what it means to you, I'm starting to decide that I will not cut it off (maybe just a trim, as I like it to look cared for, clean and relatively neat). I realised that my hair is part of me, and, at least for now, it is valuable to me it makes me feel happy about myself! In any event, I find the discussion very enriching and encouraging.
Now for the actual question. Could some of you "talk" about your experiences on interviews? What is it the interviewer ask about your long hair? What have you responded? Has it worked? What does the interviewer want to really know? Did it seem to you in the interview that the only thing between you and the job was your hair length? Any recommendations? Any other long haired engineers out there? Comments will be greatly appreciated at least to help me prepare psycologicaly and to share for other, of course.

I last posted on 10/30 about my planned trip to the salon. Well, i went through with it. I had to have a couple of stiff drinks first, but I did it.
In a word , it was GREAT.
I printed a couple of updo pics that JJ (thatnks JJ) had e-mailed me and took them with me as suggested styles. I had told my stylist (Christie) that I was going to a Halloween party and wanted an updo.
I feel that she knew that there was more to it than that, but still made me feel very comfortable.
We were in a seperate little cubicle so that made it a llitle easier too, although I was apprehensive about leaving.
Anyway, she washed and rolled my hair which took about 45 min.
I was under a dryer for about another 45 min. This was out in a larger common area with other people (all female) but I didn't attrct too much attention. I figured that with so many men getting perms that the site of a guy in rollers must not be too unusual.
After I was dry, I went back to Christie's cubicle. She wanted to know if she could elaborate some on the stles shown in the pictures and I said of course.
The result,again about 45 min later, was incredible. My hair was pulled sraight up on top of my head all the way around (as opposed to a French Twist in the back) and fastened with hair pins all around. Then there were simply layesr and mounds and piles of curls everywhere, some cascding back down the back of my head. She also pulled several strands loose around my face, in front of my ears amd the nape of my neck. All of these she turned into ringlets with a curling iron and small hot rollers.
It was a wonderful experiance, but I told her I was apprehensive about leaving. She was great. She took my car keys and pulled my car to the rear of the salon and let me out the back door.(I hadn't even known there was a back door)
Driving home wasn't too bad. I just stayed focused straight ahead until I got there. If there were any reactions to me I didn't see any. My car has a slifght tint to the windows and that may have helped some, alon with the fact that it was now quite late in the afternoon and starting to get pretty dark.
My girlfriend got home about 30 min after I did. As those of you who have read my earlier posts know, she is really into this. She loved it and coudn't keep her hands off of it. She loved the fact that I had surprised her like this but said that she wiched she had been there for the entire time. She has tried these elaborate updos on me before herself, but htey just don't have that professional look. She thinks that she can pick up some pointers if she sees how a pro does it. Shes begging me to go back and take her with me. I'm sure I will, as soon as I can summon together the nerve to tell Christie that I want to come back, and not under the false premise of a costume party.
We stayed in that night, I guess that is another topic altogether.
I NEED A FEMALE OPINION: Why is it that some of you ladies (like my girlfriend) enjoy the feminization of your boyfriends/husbands?
My girlfriend can't explain it so I sure woud like some opinions from some of you ladies out there.

There was a flurry of congrats e-mailed to me when the site was first created. But almost none of those people contributed any images. In fact, almost 100% of the new images I have received over the last few months have come from 2 or 3 specific people. As much as I appreciate their efforts, I didn't intend to see Rollerama become a site featuring just a few "stars" of the roller set.
Where are the legions of roller people who used to hang out on HairNet? The ones who regaled us with tales of salons and updos and exchanging roller sets with significant others and the like? Where are all the ones who claimed they had photos?
I think they fall into two categories. The larger (by far) are the "phony balonies" who probably never had their hair in rollers in their life and never had the photos they claim to, and are just living a "virtual" roller set life through the Net. The other, smaller group, are the people who are honest about having material, but still perversely prefer to post e-mails on various boards trying to trade photos with others. In fact, I have received a number of e-mails from people asking me to put them in touch with others who could trade roller pics -- that defeats the entire purpose of why I started Rollerama! When I ask these individuals why they don't just contribute to the web site and share their material with ALL roller fans so that ALL can benefit instead of just a few, I never hear back from them again. I don't understand this mentality -- it makes no sense.
And most of the material I have received has been from crossdressers. I have no problem with that, but I wonder if that predominance has turned some people off. I had hoped to see material from some honest-to-God roller fetishists -- guys who are not necessarily CDs, but have a full head of hair and enjoy getting it set and styled in traditionally "feminine" ways. Where are these people?
I am going to keep Rollerama active for two more weeks. No, I have not updated in some time, because all the new stuff I have comes from two people who already occupy a great deal of space on the page. I am challenging everyone ELSE who is into rollers to "put your photos where your mouth is" and contribute. If I don't get a significant amount of material in the next two weeks, Rollerama will be pulled off the Web. I didn't intend for it to just sit there for months on end with no updates.
As those of you who have read my posts in the past know, my girlfriend began to roll my hair (now about 8" below my collar) many months ago. We posted alot of messages here and got some really great feedback and suggestions. We were really encouraged by alot of writers here to go to a salon for a professional set/style experience, especially for updos that she was tyring out on me.
Well, I've finally mustered up the courage to give it a try. I'm going late tomorrow afternoon. I'm still pretty nervous about it. ( My girlfriend dubbed me Bashful Boy for a good reason). I've told the stylist that its for a Halloween party (thanks for that suggestion R . There really is no party, but thats just my shyness ruling my actions. I do want to experience this but am just to shy to come out and tell someone else that. So, the Halloween excuse seems to work. The stylist,on the phone, sounded great and thought it would be fun. I paln on surprising my girlfriend when she gets home from work, so I'll be at the salon alone.
I'm taling a picture with me of a style that I want to try ( thanks J.J. for e-mailing the updo pics).
Are there any other suggestions that anyone has to make this less stressful for me? I really can't believe that I'm doing this, but all of the encouragement we got here has really helped.
Anyway, since tomorrow afternoon is the big day (big hair day?) let me hear from you soon if you have any thoughts.

I have very fine (i.e. thin-stranded)and fairly curly (especially if left to dry on its own) hair, which I have not had cut at all for about five years now. However, it is still not quite shoulder-length. For reasons irrelevant to this board, I am very stressed at present, which I am sure does not help, but the biggest problem seems to be that the ends get very tangled and either break off or get pulled out when I try to disentangle them. So far as I can see, the ends are not split, but do seem to narrow to a very fine point. Does anyone have any ideas:-
(i)Would it help to trim the ends? If so, should I try some sort of layering, or just leave every hair as long as possible, subject to trimming off the very thin bits, as I would hope that it would then grow to be of relatively uniform length but below the shoulders?
(ii)Does anyone know of a strengthening agent which does not make tangling even worse?
I've always wanted to grow long hair and a long beard. I've had a pony tail for about 9 years, and have made many attempts to grow a beard. I feel wronged when society compels me to keep shaving.
I'm trying to grow a beard. I'm thinking of giving up again because it seems people think I'm a criminal, probably because they think a beard makes any man look like a homeless person, a Charles Manson or a Rasputin. It seems the bank doesn't like me and has asked me for identification when I have a beard (I guess a beard causes "face blindness" in the eyes of the bank because people can easily grow or shave beards). At a K-mart in Chico, California, a cashier failed to de-activate the security tags on items I purchased, causing the alarm to go off when trying to leave the store. I wonder if the cashier didn't like me and intentionally "forgot" to de-activate the security tags. I wonder if I'll have to shave or stay at home all the time and have others do all my shopping? It seems something has to give because I'm tired of fighting it.
I believe rights to wear any chosen hairstyle are very important, probably more important than sexual orientation or religion. Sexual behavior and religion can be easily hidden and kept in private, but hairstyles can't be hidden. People are forced to conform in physical appearance.
I don't know of any "hair rights" organization that is there to defend people who are told to change their hairstyle. It seems most of the battles in defense of long hair are fought by individuals who hire a lawyer instead of getting a haircut. Unfortunately, most people find it easier to give in and change their hairstyle.
There is one "Organization for the Advancement of Facial Hair" club in San Mateo, California (www.ragadio.com/oafh). But it is only a local organization.
I don't mean to be discouraging, but I'm trying to find how to deal with these issues.
I learned to set my hair by watching my girlfriend and reading some hair magazines. At first it is a little tricky, but a little practice will help. I find it easy to do mine but have a harder time doing my girlfriends I know Velcro Rollers are a little easier but they are not to good for the hair and tangle easy. I like magnetic rollers the best. I enjoy the rollers in my hair and also the results after I take them out. A couple times a year I like to go to the salon and have my hair set. I like to see women in rollers, and try to pick a salon that does a lot of roller sets. I find it a bit stressful to walk in and ask to have my hair set in rollers, however most of the time the stylists does not blick a eye. I enjoy someone setting my hair, but I enjoy the privacy of my home.Everyone talks about wrapping their set which is fine, however I enjoy my hair set in rollers without anything over them. I do not have any problem sleeping in rollers.
There has been some concern about the anonymity of posts on this board. I don't know what the nature of the concern is. I'm a little puzzled what the concern is but am willing not to make an issue of it.
The software used to run this board does not capture e-mail addresses unless you enter them. Furthermore, it does not capture IP addresses. I rely on the integrity of posters, and so far, there have been no serious problems. If there becomes a problem with people forging others' names, I will add IP capturing. However, I will first post a warning and make it very clear when I turn this feature on.
Other than that, the only place I know of that captures your information is my server logs, and those are not available to the public. I also delete them regularly. They should stay on the server no longer than a couple days.
I recently purchased a US Robotice Palm Pilot and learned the hard way of a problem. I'm not quite sure yet what the nature of the problem is, but one of the effects is that I lost my in-box in my mail reader. Somehow, the desktop software caused my hard disk to seem inaccessible to the newsreader, which promptly started a new in box. I did have a backup. However, my most recent backup was on September 26. So, if you sent me some e-mail since then, please resend it.
I now reboot my PC after I resynch the Palm Pilot (until I learn exactly what is going on). If my Ditto drive didn't require that my video driver is running standard VGA, I'd do backups more frequently.
Fortunately, this affected ONLY my in box. Messages filed to other folders were unaffected. That means I still have all my junk mail (well I could simply delete it, right?). I also still have all messages I manually filed somewhere, which, for the past month, unfortunately is only the automatically filed stuff, meaning one-on-one message are probably history.
I an't believe this terrific site! I've been into hair --esp. long hair, and using curlers, etc. since the early '70's. I've worn my fine brown hair in various cuts and lengths from 3" to almost waist length --and looked great most of the time. I've always styled it myself. For some reason, I never considered having it set in a salon, though after reading some of your experiences, I'm considering it.
In the '70's, I often set by below-chin paige in jumbo brush rollers. Sometimes I set ti just around the hairline for a more flat-topped turned under look. Other times I would put it up in as many as 16 brush rollers for a teased bubble style. I had less desirable results with pink foam rollers and perm rods, but it was fun to experiment with them.
In the '80's, I started using those light-weight plastic curlers that come in bright colors. Thes days, the Velcro rollers are the only way to go for cold sets. They are super light and stay in the hair well. I have the big Clarol velvet curler set. but I haven't used it that much because the curlers seem too heavy for my fine hair.
If you've never set your hair here's what I'd suggest:
-Pick up some Velcro (or "Self-Grip") curlers, a package of large bobby pins, and a curler net. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. stock plenty. Mail-order catalogs like Beauty boutique sell them, too.
_If possible, have a wife/girlfriend/sister/hairdresser teach you how to wind the rollers. This will save you a lot of experimentation.
-If you must teach yourself, as I did scour the magazine racks, bookstores, and the Net for instruction. Magazines such as Redbook, Family Circle, and Cosmo occasionally give setting how-tos. Most sizable bookstores have a well-illustrated book or two with setting instructions.
-Practice in private when you've got plenty of time. You may need to rewash your hair if you don't like the results. It's probably not going to come out great the first 2-3 tries.
I'd like to hear of your experiences with home hair setting --as well as any more trips to the salon, guys. And I'm happy to give any advice based on my experience.
Quick question for folks:
at various times I've seen lists of longest hair in the world (or even
specific countries) which only include women, or pictures of women who won
various long-hair contests, or just special-interest newspaper articles on
women with long hair (for which the qualification seems to be "measurable
length longer than your height") - but men are almost never mentioned (for
the obvious reason that they rarely grow it that long - or is there a
scientific reason? does male hair not grow as quickly or have as long life
as female hair?)
The exception I've found is from Guiness:
1966-1974, they reported that "The longest recorded hair was that of Swami
Pandarasannadhi, the head of the Thiruvadu Thurai monastery, India. His
matted hair was reported in 1949 to be 26 feet in length."
From 1975-1987, they added the detail, "From photographs it appears that he
was afflicted with the disease Plica caudiformis, in which the hair becomes
matted and crusted as a result of neglect." After 1987, they stopped
mentioning this.
In 1990 and 1991, they mentioned, "no photographic or scientific evidence has
ever been supplied in order to support this extreme measurement." Because of
this, after 1991, they stopped mentioning him at all.
Every other mention in Guiness is of women, most notably Diane Witt, Mata
Jagdamba, and an unnamed 18th century Polish woman who willed her 12 foot
braid to a museum.
Now, I've seen hair longer than my own several times - pre-cut Mart, for
example, but I'm curious what the longest verified hair is for men... ?

To start, my hair reaches past the middle of my back and is even longer than my wife's. I can't remember the last time I got it cut, but it had to be within the last six or seven years.(I did get it trimmed a quater inch for my wedding a year and a half ago, but that was a special day!) Before all that, I woe it in a "medium to long" style that fell just over my ears and collar and that style I just let grow out. When it was long enough (or too long, take your pick) I started to wear it back in a ponytail. The ponytail became the costumary way I wore it and only occationally wore it loose. One day last week, I happened to have my hai rloose while walking from the dinning room to the living room. My wife was in the kitchen and watched me through the kitchen pass-through. She said that I needed to get my hair evened up because it looked skragglely[sp] at the ends. After looking at it, I agreed. (Due to what amounts to another sotry, I didn't get it done the next day, this was due to a very large four-footed guest that is hopefully now with a family with lots of kids... but I digress) She told me that if I was going to do it, that I should get the full nine yard: shampoo, cut, style, blowdry. After all, "there is something about sitting back and relaxing while someone else does your hair". I went to a local saloon that takes walk-ins (a Hair Cuttery, geat place). After I told them what I wanted, they got me the next available 'stylist', or whatever the term is these days, who took me to my seat. Now I think that two things are important to note: 1) I was the only male there 2)I also has the longest hair of anyone there. As I was being led to the sinks to ge tmy hair washed I overheard the [typical] comment of: "I wish MY hair was that long!" (My typical response is usually, "Then don't cut!" but I was good.) My stylist, Terry, started off with asking what I wanted. I told her wash and cut to even things up. Since my bang had some catching up to do, it was a couple inches off the back and fractions off the front. So as I sat back ,way back, she gathered up my hair and began to wet it (even asked if the water was okay temperature-wise) I think that we can all agree that there is something definitely relaxing about how someone massaging your scalp when they're washing you hair. After the rinse, she toweling it off and we headed for her station. There we got to the fine nuts and bolts of what I wanted. Since I once had a bad experience with someone 'styling' my hair as opposed to the way I had said I wanted it, this was a crusial point for me! She started with combing out the mass, since one of my more recent problems was lots of snarls, the trim would also help there. While she was doing this, I could again hear envious comments about my hair [which even we guys can't get enough of]. She divided my hair in sections to start the evening up process, taking the individual locks, folding them and twisting them to secure them to the side-top of my head. At one point, when she put up one twist, she ask my opinion of the style and I had to confess that the 'Samuri top-knot' just wasn't me. We held some of the usual client-stylist conversation, but in cases where the hair is long and staying that way, the convesation always tends to stray back to you hair. Additionally she gave me one tip: with hair my length, one should by the shampoo and conditioner as separate entities. After all of the sections were brought down and trimmed accordingly, she proceeded to blow-dry straighten it wave I had gotten from always tieing it back. Once that was done, she showed me the evenness of the back to the front and also applied something to keep the frizz down. I told her how I didn't like stuff (nice knowledgable term there) that left my hair in place but stiff. She was very good and assured me it wouldn't and then explained what she had and what she would use... for my approval. Then she tied it back in its ponytail and let me up for final inspection. It looked good and I felt good. Returning home, my wife hartly approved. I took my hair out of the ponytail to get a more all-over look and to show off the evenness-when-loose to the one who started it all. She asked me, "Doesn't it feel better to have some one spoil you and do you hair?" I had to agree, one of the pleasures of having long hair is having some one fuss over it for you, but next time, maybe we'll do each other's at home...

Yesterday my wife buffy made a appointment for me at the Beauty Salon. She informed me taht I had a 10:00 am appointment and my appointment would be with Maryla. Wehn I asked her waht it was for she said you will find out. Before leaving for the salon Buffy had laid a a outfit for me to wear. Buffy has a stronf roller fetish so I figured it was for a shampoo & set. When I arrived at the Salon I gave my name to the receptionist and she told me Maryla would be with me in a bit. Why don't I go to the changing room and slip on a gown so my clotehs don't get soiled. Now I was beginning to worry. As I wsa coming out of teh changing area both Buffy & hergirlfriend came and . They both had appointments also.
Maryla came to get me and noticed Buffy and greated her. As we wer leaving she turned to her and said just like we discuessed. After being drapped I was informed taht my hair was going to be frosted. After looking over my hair Myrla said buffy was right I would look good in a heavy frost. Marlya told me not to worry nobody would laugh. As a matter of fact most of the stylist wanted to watch.
after pulling my hair through the cap and applying the bleach to tmy strands I happen to notice that both buffy and her girlfriend were getting a frosting. when the lifgtener had reached the right shade my color was applied and finally rinsed off. As I came back from the shampoo sink Maryla unwrapped my hair and started to ser my hair in large brush rollers. With my set wrapped I aws placed under the dryer.
After a few minutes buffy & her girlfriend wer in dryers next to me.
she smiled at me and told me that when I was I waited for both buffy and her girlfriend. When she came out of the salon I noticed that all three of us had rthe same haevy frost and the same hairstyle.

I have finally relented to my Stylists advice and made an appointment for a perm along with a normal cut and blow dry next Thursday. My Stylist is male (which helps) & although I trust him - there are a few 'awkward' questions that I'm just too embarrased to ask ...
My hair is fairly short ( very fine) & will only require perming on top for body ... aka Mickey Rourke (9 & 1/2 Weeks) style.
Will it be an acid perm he'll apply ?
How long will I have the rollers in ?
Will I have to sit under a dryer (it's a busy Salon) ?
Will the result really only last about 6 weeks ?
If any of you guys reading this message has had a body perm before - PLEASE relate your experience (hopefully positive !) before I take the plunge.

It seems that the former Samson has got a haircut! I was surfing the net, and I came across his website, and I saw that he had cut his hair. It is not al gone. He did not shave it, as he had once mentioned in his web page, but it is about chest length.

Wearing a Helmet with long Hair: you see it in every Motorcycle
Movie, the Rocker's have long Hair, some even wear it lose with
no helmet and let the wind blow trough their hair, but I tell you it
needs hours to get your Hair combed
afterwards (own Holiday experience). So a ponytail is a must
when you drive a motorcycle.
But even that causes tangles and knots that are very difficult
to brush out. My Solution until now was to put the ponytail under the
jacket. But a good Helmet has a thight fit and if I put it off
I pull some hair with it, wich means that after i get of the bike
I have to make my hair. ===:-{
What i also saw (mostly on women) is that someone put his loose hair
completle into the helmet. HOW DO YOU DO THAT?
is it practical?
or is there a better solution?
what about braiding? (since a couple of weeks i finaly managed to braid my hair)

But unfortunately it gets very messy after a wash. It was suggested
a body wave might control it but I dont like the idea of chemicals in my hair.
My girlfriendsuggested having a regular set in rollers. My question is
do salons do this for guys, what is involved in the process, how long it takes
and how long does it last.
Can anyone help me or has had a similar experience.

Hi all,
I just found this great product (in Walgreens) called Perm for a Day.
It consists of little U-shaped pieces of plastic, around which you wind
your damp hair in figure-eights, then clamp it with a small plastic harness.
When dry, I got this terrific perm-like set of S-waves that last very well --
it looked really nice (if I do say so myself ;*)! They're really quick and
easy to use -- the only drawback (for me) is that I probably won't get
a perm now, since this seems to have most of the advantages (except
actually sitting in the salon) and none of the disadvantages (harsh chemicals,
radical appearance change, etc.). Check it out!

Hey everybody... I find myself in an interesting position. I myself have long hair, but most (if not all) guys I with long hair... well, they generally do not dress "sharp" it's usually just earthy "granola" type clothes, or like a metal style with a leather jacket etc. I usually dress in slacks and a sportsjacket, and part my long hair on the side, with the left side slicked back, and the right side loose. It's kind of a wierd style, but it looks 'clean' and keeps some hair out of my eyes when I want to. Anyway, Am I the only one with this style? I have been trying to find pictures of other men with long hair, so I could get some fashion ideas from them, but honestly none of the other styles would suit me... Oh well, I'm sure I sound like a snob ... But after looking at this site and all of the pictures I was really suprised not to see more well dressed men with groomed long hair... i think Argentina is the country with the largest ratio of long-haired men to the overall male population. Especially among the young people. When i watch football matches from Argentina, i can see that most men in the stadium wear long hair, usually tied in a long pony tail which reaches their mid back. Does anybody know about other countries with a large male long haired population?

I have long straight hair past my shoulders, but so far, no one has mistaken me for a girl yet. But to my surprise, that all changed a while ago. I was going out towards the door from the cafeteria when I met my friend Nessa, who has the same length and one length style as me. We started complaining to each other about how hard the midterm was. We were kinda blocking the cafeteria entrance when the janitor passed between us, saying "excuse me LADIES" in a courteous manner. Nessa and I were laughing hard because of this incident.
I finally met Bill Black at Sportsman Barber Shop. He has some innovative uses for hair, including garden fertilizer, clothes, decorations, and fishing lures. I asked him if I could take pictures of his items for display on the internet. He said yes, so I will do that when I get a chance. I'll post a message here after I've scanned the pictures.
In the 1980's I remember a lot of my long haired friends, cutting off their hair for special events, like weddings, or even still, when they decided to do something with their lives, like taking on a cause, like participating at charity benifits, or getting involved in politics. Being stubborn, I never cut off my waist-length hair more than an inch or two (for split ends), and was shyed away from society because of my hair. I took up a job as a bike messenger, and had a boss with a good attitude, that was tuck my hair under a cap. The wind messed it up while riding my bike, and my hair got caught in my back pack's straps, which wasn'nt pleasant at all. Tucking my waist-length hair under a cap, was a great solution, and even after having it washed, people were convinced I got a crewcut. I often teased other long-hairs about their hair and took off my cap to surprise them as well.
In my life, I have attended two weddings, and one funeral, without cutting one inch of my hair. My best friend's mom died two years ago of a heart attack, and I just dug up the best clothes I could put on, and attended the funeral. Nobody made any comment whatsoever about my hair, which I washed clean, and tied neatly.
Recently, because of a brother with autism, I became more involved with the local autistic society, and even spoke in public, and to media, about autism, and never had to cut an inch of my hair.
I have, myself a mild form of Autism, called Asperger's Syndrome, (www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/) that is I tend to stick to routines, and detest changes (including in my hair and dress styles). I have the same look I had in 1979 as a student. One symptom of autism, is the inability to read facial, and body language, and I tend to rely 100% on written and spoken word to communicate. Tones of voice, inflections are either ambiguous or meaningless to me. The good side of this, is that when I am alone on a bus, I never notice if somebody is giving me dirty looks, (I cannot tell if someone is looking at me, the adresses in the window behind my back, or just lost in his thoughts and happens to be looking at me without knowint it). I simply cannot interpret any nonverbal reactions of people, to the point that when I am alone on the bus, I have a peaceful ride, and when I am with someone, I am told, that such and such a passenger is staring at me or giving me dirty looks.
This aspect, of not being able to tell who is giving me dirty looks, helped me keep my hair without being self-councious about what other people think.

I would like to ask other guys if they have had the same problem as me when growing their hair. My hair is now about a couple of inches short of shoulder length and covers my ears at the sides - I am growing out the layers. Recently, I have started to be addressed as miss or madam by sales people etc when they see me from the back, or sides but even from the front - now I am not feminine by any description - 6' tall and weigh around 200lbs and very broad - so what is it. Initially I thought they may be sarcastic but it has happened too often and somethimes you can even see confusion in peoples faces. It is just the hair length, or is it the way it is cut or is it something else about me that I don't know about. Has this happened to anyone else. Obviously it is embarassing for both parties so I am keen to find out if I can do something about it. By the way I am not exagerating, recently this happened every other day over a two week period.

I want long hair but my mom and dad always make me cut it when it gets to my ears and it always flips at that length. I work on cars at my school so I would fit in nicely if I go through with it, I don't plan on puttig it in a ponytail I will just wear is loose under my hat and behind my collar because I plan to only let it grow to just below my sholder blades(1-5in)and I will do this until people get use to it. What shold I do, should I defie my parents and go for it???
Can someone help me. I used to have long hair. It started getting a little strange on the top (a little thin, I'm only 22!!) When cut short (before and after)my hair is really frizzy and wavey, but each hair fizzes and waves in a different direction. What can I do??

I recently cut my hair but left one small pigtail similer to the one in another disscusion. This has helped me hide it. I like how the women like to tug on it. I would like to know if anyone else has this style. It is nice to have a pigtail this long because I like how it feals on my bare back.

I finally decided to let it show. I tryed a ponytail but that made it stick straight out, I found out the real color of my hair, platinum blond. Is there any way to make my hair grow faster because then I could put it into a ponytail, one that doesn't stick out sooner than I had planed.

There is a new lady who is working on my aisle at work. She stopped by the entrance to my cubicle and commented about how long my hair was. I turned around to thank her, and she exclaimed, "You're a man!" She has long hair herself, probably down to her waist if it's pulled straight.

I read a post here a couple of weeks ago about putting a little lotion in the hair to combat 'dryness'.. I got some alpha-hydroxy facial lotion and gave it a try.. I works great.. This is made by St. Ives and is not perfumed.. (hard to find one that ISN'T)

I have straight blond/white hair and it's down to the small of my back, it's layered on top and just the back is long, I am in school and the kids keep taunting me about it saying that I look like a girl. I personaly like it this way but I can't hide it in any way. I want to hide because the kids at my school try to set it on fire! What should I do?
A couple of months ago I was booked in for my first wet set by a girlfriend and I put up a post saying I was a bit nervous and asking what I could expect. Today I received an email (from a Brian) asking me to follow up on that post and let everyone know how it went.
Just to recap, this was a girlfriends suggestion since I was having probs with styling my hair at the time. I had had perms in the past, but she thought a wet set may be worth trying for flexibility and also because she had a particular style in mind.
The salon was located in the centre of a busy town and is inside a department store, so it was very busy on a Saturday morning when I went. The stylist who did my hair was competent, but I would say not too friendly to my situation and made a few comments like:- 'I bet you feel pretty stupid like this' or 'I've never done this to a guy before' etc etc. The actual process itself was fairly typical - i.e. wash, combing through a setting lotion, winding onto rollers (about 1" diameter) - she also put in a few pin curls around the sides/temples because my hair was too short to roll there. She then put on a net and put me under a dryer for about 35 mins. For me this was the most embarassing part - just standing up and walking through the salon with my hair in rollers and net was not too cool, and also the dryers were located by the reception and waiting area so I got quite a few stares too. She then brushed it out and finished styling it.
Overall, the style was pretty good and very similar to what my girlfriend and I had asked for. With a bit of care it also looked OK for about 2-3 days, but that meant sleeping in a hairnet at night.
Would I do it again though - well not in that salon, thats for sure. But I would say that it seems a lot of hassle for a day to day style - OK for a special look for some reason, or a treat if you like that, then fine - but I would think that there are better or easier to maintain type of styles you can get, or if you want curly hair all the time have a perm. My own thoughts are that you would have to enjoy the process itself to want to do this too often and the end benefit is probably secondary to this.

In a recent thread, somebody was talking about how they got started
doing their hair. I think the first glimmer of interest for me may
have been watching a Jetsons episode -- I don't remember whether this
was the 60s or 80s version (I won't date myself any further ;*).
Anyway, in this episode, the automatic equipment in the Jetson's house
goes haywire, and when George gets under the grooming machine, he gets ...
an enormous blonde updo with strands of pearls! I was intrigued, and
for years, I secretly wanted a machine like that at MY house! Does
anyone else remember seeing this?

I finally gathered up the courage to tell my parents and they don't care, so it is now down to my ear lobes and growing, but I have encountered one little problem, my tech teacher thinks that if I keep this up I will look like a girl, would wearing it under my hat tucked up under it help or should I just wear it loose(no ponytails or that kind of stuff)??
In the past year, at age 50, I am finally growing out my hair.
All my life I have always wanted long hair! It was the biggest
thing I fought about with my mother all growing up. But by the
time I reached adulthood, I had been convinced by all the badgering
from the family and others that I should not have my hair long.
As the years went by, I found myself always seeking out men
with long hair as friends, and I always found long haired men
to be ones who were attractive. And my hair was creeping ever so
slowly longer with each passing year. But it never got really
long.
Well, it turns out people have a part in their brain that tells
FACES OF PEOPLE apart, and I was born with that part either missing
or not working. When I discovered that last year, I then realized
that since my early childhood, one of the main ways I've used to
identify people is by their HAIR! And as a result I've always
considered short haired people to be extremely ugly (as if they
had bags over their heads) and long haired people to be beautiful,
because to me they are INDIVIDUALS! And of course it is really
hard to have friends who you can't tell apart from other people!
About a year ago I scoured the Net and met other "face blind"
people, and guess what? LOTS of us use HAIR to tell people apart
and want their own hair LONG! After all, who wants to look in
the mirror and find what he sees to be grossly ugly? When I
finally realized in my case being longhaired is PART OF MY
DISABILITY, I felt justified in letting go at last. I felt
no one could justifiably fault me any more.... :-)
I feel a thousand times better about myself now that I have long
hair! I will NEVER cut it short again!
I've noticed several guys on here talking about negative comments
they've had about their long hair. At age 50 I just last year let
my hair grow really long for the first time, but I had it borderline
long for about ten years before that, and even that way, it did
draw an infrequent though steady stream of comments. Interestingly,
the comments I got about my hair stopped about five years ago,
despite the fact that my hair was getting a little longer with
each passing year.
I think I figured it out about three years after this happened:
I now have GRAY HAIR! Harassing someone about his appearance
is a man-to-boy thing, and once I got gray hair among my locks,
it was oh-so-inappropriate!
So, though it may be tough now, young guys take heart in knowing
the harassment will someday taper off.
In the past year I've let my hair grow out even more, and now
it's three times the length it was before. Not a negative comment
has been heard. :-)
I have this habit of running my fingers through my hair whenever I'm at church or when I'm bored. Any suggestions as how to cut this out? I've tried doing something busy with my hands but it still doesn't work. I have long, fine, straight one-length hair and it's always falling on my face. Any suggestions will be accepted but please don't tell me to cut my hair!

My girlfriend has just recently started to roll mair hair on a nightly basis. It is a wet set that uses around 48 small plastic rollers.
We both like the look and feel of letting it dry naturally and also feel that it is less damaging to my hair this way. Not only this but taking it down in the morning assures that it will hold the set during the day.
However, I just can't get used to sleeping on the rollers.
Is one type of pillow better than others? Does anyone have any suggestions?

There's not really any point to this post except that I was just thinking about it.
Several years ago, my wife had a dream in which she encountered someone in a forest. This person had several interesting qualities. Among these, nudity, and androgenous look, and long, wavy hair. What struck her the most was his hair. She attempted to draw a picture but was unable to duplicate the hair, except for one lock. It had a curl that caused the end of it to almost form a circle about two inches across.
Every one in my school thinks that men who have long hair are geeks but I want to grow my hair long. I have brown straight hair and I only know of one other person in my whole school who thinks the way I do he to has long hair but his is blond/white and down to his waist, right now it's about at the bottom of my neck. What should I do?
I have ear length brown hair with a slight wave and I was wondering what it would look like if I grew it down to my sholder blades. It does this anoying flip when it's past my neck, and I was wondering if this will go away as it grows down to my desired length.

I'm in that "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
stage where my hair looks like something out of a really bad 1940's low budget science fiction B-movie that you'd see on MST3K. Hopefully it'll grow on to the next phase soon.
I've been going to the salon for conditioning treatements several times now, and I'm noticing that each time, my hair feels great, but then as I do blow dry it on occasion, and as it's gotten longer (don't know if that has anything to do with it), my hair really seems to dry out faster, (a noticeable difference within a few weeks).
I've pretty much stopped styling it other than letting it dry with a bandana on. And just because I hate the feel, I rarely use any kind of products on my hair any more, meaning gel or mousse.
Any ideas what could be causing the quicker drying out? Could it be because it is longer? Could the deep conditioning treatments actually be hurting the hair?
I've also been trying some different shampoos and conditioners bought from the salon, which is no cheap endeavor. Still haven't found anything too great.
I've been using Biolage shampoo mostly, and while it really worked well but now I'm noticing my hair's getting to feel more and more like matted, without any softness when I rinse it out.
The Biolage conditioner's $8.00 a tube, and only lasted about three weeks.
Can anybody with longer hair give me a simple regimen for taking care of my hair that will keep it healthy, shiny etcetera that's not going to cost me an arm and a leg, and that doesn't require lots of trips to the salon? I'd love to think that there's some way to keep it healthy and shiny without this much effort.
When my hair was shorter I never had the dry prob, and just used regular store bought stuff. Not that I'd ever go back to that short length again.
Also if it helps, my hair's a shade shorter than down to my s-blades, and really fine, but very full.

I have been trying to grow my hair long over the past year. I have always loved the look of it but until now have never had the courage (for want of a better word) to go through with it. I would really appreciate some help, though.
It is on the shoulders at the back, and about 1 inch above chin at the front. I have a couple questions that I would love answers for:
1. Where I work, my boss is most unhappy about my hair so I try to make it inconspicuous by wearing a pony-tail at work. Unfortunately, this is causing the hair to kink quite badly. I appeal to anyone to tell me how to avoid this!
2. All though I can wear my hair in a pony-tail it is relatively short at the front, and the hair gets loose and goes across my face all the time. Do you think I should get the back cut (but lose the pony ability), so that the back and front are "in sync."?

While we're on the subject of big hair, does anyone know about "big hair contests"?
I heard something on NPR maybe 10 years ago, about bars in New Jersey that had these
contests. Women (only, as far as I know), would come in with clean, dry, unstyled
hair (but probably curled) and have 10 or 15 minutes to make it as big as possible.
The description was that most women sat in chairs, leaning over to tease and spray
their hair for maximum volume. There was then a parade and judging, with prizes
and local renown for the winners. It sounded like the scene was sorta suburbs post-
disco (no value judgements). I've never heard anything else about this -- has
anyone else?

Hi All,
I have been a lurker for a good while now. But now I have something which might be of a interest to the board.
I have worked for a local private investigator now for just amonth shy of a year. I worked for him as a security guard. When I was hired back in Oct 96, I had longhair then. Nothing was said about it. Now about 4 ½ weeks ago, a company memo arrived in my paycheck envelope stating our new company dress code. Of corse, the longest part of the dress code was addressing men with longhair.
Now to give y'all some other details. When I started, I always left my hair down. Nothing was said untill a month ago. When I started to hearthe comments behind my back, about the boss being unhappy about my hair....I started to tuck all my hair under my company hat.
Well, last night at work....about a half hour after my shift started, my boss just suddenly pops in for a social visit. But he didn't leave untill we had a little chat. He informed me that I MUST get my hair cut off. He said it is unfair to the other employees (keep in mind I was the ONLY longhair there). I asked him if tucking myhair under my hat was good enough, he said "no". Now , with my hair tucked under my hat, there was actually LESS hair showing than with people with short hair. I can't figure that one out :-)
Needless to say, I told him the for a guy to cut his longhair isn't an easy choice and that I would get back to him.
Well, my last day at the job is Friday morning, and that is when I resign. I thought about it for 5 mins and I thought "Life is too short to have people tell you how to dress, how to wear your hair...etc". Now, if we were talking about a job that paid like $30,000 a year and full benefits, I'd reconsier. But for a measly $6 and hour job without ANY benefits.....I will not cut my hair.
One thing aginst me here, I live in the most economically (sp) depressed area of Maryland. Jobs are VERY hard to find. I guess I'll be heading to the unemployment office soon.
I am going to have a picture taken of me tonight at work by my co-worker of me wearing my co hat with my hair tucked up. Just for reference purposes. I have consulted our local Police Officer (I went to high school with him) and he said something is fishy there, and I might has a gender discrimination case. I dunno ?
Anyhow.......I just wanted to let y'all know that it happened. I had to choose between either my job or longhair. Well.........I am unemployed now :-)

I am a 24 year old from Alaska. After reading several of the posts
concerning men and roller-sets I have decided to possiably try one
but am very nervous. What I would like to do is go to a Salon and
tell them that I want the most femenine style that they can do for
my hair. I am not a crossdresser or anything like that. I just think
that it would be kind of fun to try something diffrent. My hair is
all one length about 5 inches below my shoulders, blonde and somewhat
thick. What would a Salon think about a man coming in and wanting a
feminine style? Should I just tell them how I feel or let them do what
they want? Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.

I have always had a problem with tangled hair in the morning.. I wear it loose when I sleep since a ponytail knot bothers me in the position which I sleep.. I have tried a hair net but the thing usually ends up on the floor..

Help! I have been cutting my hair to about my chin even before hanson came out, but when it gets in my way, i kind of pull it back behind my ears like the freshman do in that movie dazed and confused. but when do, the hair behind my ears curls outward instead of just staying straight down. i was wondering if anybody else has thier hair like this,and if they do, how can i fix it so that it is always straight. I think this happens because it hits my shoulders when i put my head back. my hair is pretty thick, and shaved underneath.

Before I left for school this morning, I decided to try a new look for myself. After I got out of the shower, I applied some gel on my wet hair and I combed it through making it slick. Then, with my hair still wet, I tied it with an elastic. Am I doing something bad for my hair?? Considering that it's wet, will there be any damage done?

In a few boards I read about using lemon juice for lightning up the hair color. Does this really work? My hair is a dark blonde and I'd like to have it a brighter blonde. For how long do I have to use the lemon juice to get a change? Could these kind of hair treatment damage my hair?

I just surfed in here and perhaps this lively community can help me out with my problem. At the urging of my girlfriend, I've been growing my hair out to a length of about to the shoulders. This sounded like a good idea, but I'm currently in the "in-between land" where the hair is quite long, but not all one length, and quite messy. It's something of a shag, thick, and it keeps getting in my eyes. It's sort of like a very long Beatles style. I'm very tempted to just give up and cut it. To make matters worse, since I'm slender and not too tall, I can be mistaken for a female. How should I style this hair? Should I just give in and enjoy a feminine style? Would this be educational for me and help be overcome my bias? For the record, I'm 25 and the hair is light brown.
Over the past 25 years the number of men with long hair has grown immensely. I can not believe that the hair care industry still ignores us. Go into any metropolitan area and I'll bet that at least 25% of the people that you see with long hair are men (if not more). I think that we should use the internet to our advantage and start contacting the salons that are on the internet and telling them that we would like to make the full use of their professional skills.
In order for this to work, however, they must recognize men as a customer base. By this I mean that there should be pictures of professionaly done hair styles done on men. We shouldn't be expected to patronize places that are solely dedicated to women's needs. They might as well hang a sign outside salons stating "WOMEN ONLY". I also think that pictures of male styles should be placed in the windows so that it is clear when we enter that we are welcome.
How do you guys feel?

Here are my criteria for purging old messages. As much as possible, I would like to keep entire threads when there is still some activity in a portion of it. This way, you can refer to older messages in the thread if needed. However, to keep the board a reasonable size, I have to make periodic purges. I try to purge messages every time the main board exceeds 64K. What I do is to pick a date and delete all messages in all threads in which the MOST RECENT message is earlier than the threshold date. I will keep doing this, backup up the threshold date until I get below 64K.
I think this is a good way to maintain the board because it allows you, the posters, some control of what you want to see. If you want messages to disappear from the board, don't respond to them. OTOH, if you want them to stay, post a reply to one of the messages on the thread when you notice the board size approaching 64K.
Don't just do this willy nilly, though. Remember, I will keep backup up the date as far as necessary to get within the 64K. I will also be keeping the archive on the ftp site up to date. I did not update it after today's purge, but I will shortly.
I will also keep certain threads longer even if the oldest message is gone. For example, the opening Welcome message stayed on the board for a couple months.
I am trying to let my hair grow out and began the process by shaving my hair underneath to get it all the same length ( in a bowl cut). I just wondered if it's necessary to keep this up and if most guys keep theirs shaved underneath. I have fairly thick hair, but want to let it grow to about the base of my neck and part it in the middle. Right now it's halfway over my eyes and is looking kind of rough where it had been shaved.
This is a reply to a question raised by Darshan previously, to which I have replied, but I thought it may also be worth posting separately for comments - particularly regarding the last couple of statements I make.
The question concerned why I was interested in mens long hair fashions and in particular why Darshan had gone for a bob style and what his experience was of the ladies in his life driving him in this direction. My reply follows:
I work in the fashion industry and have a particular interest in androgenous/unisex styles, including hair. This goes for both sexes. However, in the past I have worn my hair both short and long and I regularly wear skirts and dresses as well as slacks/jeans etc. In other words as a woman I think I have more choice and its socially more acceptable to wear different fashions since the goal posts are much wider for women. I am interested in looking at, if you like, the other side of this coin. What styles/accessories can men use or wear and why can't a guy with long hair (which is becoming more acceptable) wear it in any style he wants or use accessoires at least to keep it manageable. I liken this issue to the male fragrance/toiletries area that has boomed within the last 20 years. I really think that in another 20 years attitudes regarding hair will also have relaxed. This will be a potentially big market for fashion industry - think of the extra volume of products that could be sold to guys who were taking more interest in their hair, think of the extra salon time that would be used - the extra people employed and think of the design of perhaps more masculione hair jewelry etc. I am not really involved in the exploitation of any of these products and just have a general interest in the area, but I can see the potential is very large.
However, in order for this change to happen there has to be a relaxation of antipathy from the mass population and also a desire to move to this position from more men. This is why I am interested in experiences such as those of Darshan since it provides clues if you like in what drives both men and women in wanting to see this change and this in turn will give a better idea of how to present such issues to more men in general. Does this make sense or am I rambling?

Hi to everyone, I have managed to regain access to a line for more or less the next week, before I go on vacation.
One thing I would like to ask Victor, is whether you have kept a record of all the messages ever posted to the board and would it be possible for people to have access to such old messages either through html pages or just downloading a text file for example. I am sure that many people would be interested to see the questions that have been asked before and also whether there are any changes that people get in reply to more or less the same questions. Perhaps (although this would involve more work) the messages could even be grouped together by topic.
Any thoughts or comments whether this would be pratical,

I have just finished scanning some pictures of myself that were taken from various times of my life. When I get a chance, I will add a page describing each of these pictures. In the picture I am standing on the deck of one of the Vancouver Island to the mainland ferries. The specific location is close to the prow where the wind is blowing very hard. Well, for as much as I can do with twists and braids and clips and everything else, I'm not much of one for styling shorter hair, or extensive bangs / face frames. My idea of beautiful long hair is just long all around, so I would like my bf to grow his all out. (he's been putting off a haircut for about 6 months now) I braid it sometimes, which he likes, but doesn't wear it out in public, because he thinks he looks horrible with his hair pulled away from his face. So he would like to go back to an old style, with more hair covering his face, ie, cut short on the top and sides. (see link)
He likes to style it in the morning (with brush and blow drier) to create a side part and a wave over his face, which looks good, but we can't agree on what he should do with it (although we both agree he needs at least a trim for split ends). His current hair style is in my last post. Any suggestions?
I've been growing my hair since March, and the back is now quite
long (down to my shoulders). It's loosely curly (natural)
and very thick. It seems as though it should be significantly longer
than it is by now (at least below my shoulders), and I can only get
about 4 inches of it into a ponytail. Apart from straightening it,
which I don't really want to do, anyone have suggestions on
maybe loosening the curl up a bit so it can be longer?
Ideally I'd like to get enough of a ponytail (6 inches or so)
so I can tie it up and have it look good. Four inches seems too
short to appear correct (on me, on others it seems to look great!)

While waiting in an airport recently, I was scanning the magazine stand and I came upon a cover story about the Hanson Brothers: three brothers (ages 11, 14, 16) who have become a musical group and are becomming popular...pupular enough to get on the cover of a magazine anyway.
All three brothers have long, blonde hair to somewhat below chin length. I read some of the article, and they are considered by many to be quite a "wholesome" bunch, a musical group that even conservative Christians would like. (The brothers are even doing milk ads...can't get much more wholesome than that.)
That being the case, perhaps long hair among the youth will become more acceptable. Let's hope.

J.J.-Haven't heard from you in a while. We have and are making good use of the pics that you sent,though. We printed out the first one and my girlfriend took it to her salon to be copied on her. (Naturally, I tagged along)
It turned out great. As we did before, as soon as we got home she tried to duplicate it on me and it turned out very well, although it did not have that professional quality look. Maybe one day I'll be able to just atake a deep breath and go with her and have it done along with her in a salon. Someone else suggested we take a trip to another city where there would be absolutely no chance of seeing anyone we know and going to a salon there. My girlfriend is very excited about that idea and I'm starting to warm up to it. It may be a good way to get started.

Iv'e been wondering if other people have had simular expereinces as me while growing up. I'm I guy and when I was about 10 years old I used to watch my mother set her hair. We were talking about her hair one day and how she set it and she- I had hair doown to my shoulders at the time- suggested I try doing my hair like she did and volunteered to show me how to do it. I was a little embaresed at first, but I thought it was really neat and wanted to have that full look with a flip. So she did it. She put my hair up in medium sized rollers and then I sat under the dryer. I loved the way it turned out!! Since then Iv'e been using rollers off and on to do my hair.
I'm writing a retro (mid 50's) hair story (no sex or violence). Need help with technical and historical details from anyone. One character is a straight haired male who has his hair waved to look like the young Liberace. What lenght would his hair be? What kind of curler/roller pattern would be used. Yesterday my daughters and I stopped by for lunch at the mall. We went to a pizza place where my daughters each ordered a piece of pizza. The girl waiting on us asked how long my hair was. By way of response, I turned around so she could see. She then told me that she and her dad were having a hair growing contest to see who could get to butt-length first. Her braided hair was about between her shoulder blades. She said her father's was down to midback. I thought the whole thing was kind of fun and interesting because there I was with my daughter, and both of us have butt-length hair.
I was watching this filipino program where they have a dance contest. The contestants must dance to the tune of Erasure's latest single called "Your Love Is Killing Me". There were two groups of contestants consisting each of three guys and two girls. But then, there was this girl that in that contest that really caught my eye! She has black waist length hair and when her group danced she was the only one that stood out and gave life to the performance because her hair was moving with her as she jitters to the tune of the fast beat. What is even more amazing is she did three handsprings and her hair looked so graceful while it fell gently on her face I almost fell in love with her....
Ever since I was a kid I've always liked the look of long hair moving.

I normally let my shoulder length hair dry naturally. However, sometimes I need to dry it more quickly. Is a hood dryer better (in terms of haircare and simplicity) for drying long hair compared with using a blow dryer. Also I have a fairly simple straight style - is this easy to do with a hood dryer. Has anyone any experience of using one.
When I have tried to grow my hair long in the past, it always frizzes out at the ends, and I wind up with split ends. How do I get my hair to cascade down, and not frizz out. My hair is curly, but I see women with curlier hair than mine, and they are able to get long. Perhaps I should not blow dry my hair? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Friends- Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. Each of you have been so nice and seemed to earnestly want to hear back from us that we wanted to be sure to follow through.
As I said in my last message, my girlfriend had an appointment on Tuesday to have an updo in a salon. She really enjoys wearing them, but this was primarily a "learning trip", so I went along too. My girlfriend had told her (the stylist) that she wanted to pay particularly close attention so she could learn how to do them for herself. But I think the stylist knew what was really going on from some comments she made (" we do alot of guys here", "both of you be sure to come back sometime ",etc.) Sorry J.J. but I just couldn't bring myself to ask the stylist for an updo, at least not yet.
After putting my girlfriends hair into a French Twist, she asked the stlist to take it down because she really wanted something with more curls. So we really were able to get two experiances for the price of one. I don't really know how to describe the second one. except to say that her hair was pulled straight up all around with mounds and mounds of curls on top of her head and ringlets all around her face and neck.
As soon as we got home my girlfriend started to work on me. She's a very god student. She has played and experimented with me every night this week and has actually gotten pretty good. It doesn't look as thouhg a professional did it- but still very good.
We now want to try some new and different updos. We're still a little hesitant to put our e-mail address on the internet (remember the internet is new to us too) because of some of the nuts that are out there who could pick it up. BTW, does that not concern those of you who do publish your e-mail addresses?
Anyway, we sure would appreciate the posting of as many different updos as possible,also any links to sites where updos can be found.
As always we really do look forward to hearing you comments and look forward to and appreciate your suggestions.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've been quite busy. As I've told you before, I've fallen for my new "look". My girlfriend has taken to continuing my "makeover".......I got my first manicure yesterday.......she is really out to clean up my act and have me take pride in my appearance. I am quite surprised how much neater my hands look now that my nails are done. We shall be heading back to school soon, and since we share an apartment and a major(Dance), we'll be pretty much on our own for a while before friends and family see us again. She has promised me that I am about to become a new person.......She has certainly been right on so far, so I guess I'm in good hands. A friend told me the other day that she takes vitamin E to strengthen, promote growth, increase health (etc) of her hair.. She has waist length hair and it is gorgeous.. Is there any truth to this??

I have always in the past had to have short hair, due to a military career, but I am now in the process of letting it grow. I have always washed it every day. It is now almost collar length. Should I continue daily washings, or is there a time when I should start washing it less frequently?

My boyfriend and I play bridge at a local duplicate club sometimes, and we stand out in general because we are about 40 years younger than everybody else there. We also both have long hair, but it's usually not commented on. Last week we were there, one woman approached us and heaped complimented on us both, saying that she had been trying to decide all evening whose hair was the most beautiful. (she finally decided on mine) I was in a great mood for the rest of the night! :)
The link shows a great picture of us, with an excellent shot of him, but you can't see my hair nearly as well. Mine is blonde and straight, about to my waist, with a single layer of straight bangs in front. In the picture I have the top layer pulled back in a barrette, with a string of white flowers (from nearby bushes) wrapped around the clip.
Saturday night was a great night for viewing long hair, both male and female. I'll describe briefly a few of the people I saw.
* Well, the first one was actually on Friday, but it's pretty significant. I ran into a couple who I had seen before at the Tornado Jam, which was a benefit concert benefiting the victims of the Jarell tornado. Barb had blonde hair almost down to her knees. The guy she was with, Dan, also had long hair, about mid-back in a braid. We talked for a while, and Dan was thrilled to hear about the long hair-related internet sites.
* On Saturday, just as I was parking my car, two guys walked right past me. I had seen these two guys before. One had short hair, and the other had hair almost down to his knees. If I had parked just two minutes earlier, I would have approached them and asked the long haired dude to be a willing victim of my Samson page. If any of you reading this knows him, have him contact me.
* On 6th Street, there were about half a dozen guys with hair as long or longer than mine, most of them thicker as well. One guy has a girlfriend along who had hair just past her butt.
* Another guy had long, grey hair, braided into three braids, the middle one was in the back, which he let hang down his back. The other two were on the sides, and rested on his chest. He was walking with two girls, both with butt-length hair. One had black, wavy hair. The other had reddish blonde straight hair.
* I ran into Dana again, a girl who goes around to all the clubs taking Polaroids of people for $5. She also has hair to her butt. She calls herself a hair farmer.
* There was a guy with a full beard and foot-long hair dressed in a tuxedo just standing around. At first I thought he was a limo driver. But the limo near where he was standing seemed to be being driven by someone else.
* I had my hair in a 4 strand braid (not in anticipation of meeting all these longhairs, but just because I felt like doing it). I like this style because it makes the braid twist from head to end.
* There was a guy who had all his hair twisted: he took a small clump of hair, twisted it tightly and pinned or somehow affixed it to his head so that the loop sort of made a twisted lump on his head. He had about 20 or so of these twisted lumps. His hair was died red and orange.
* Another guy had all his hair braided into small braids.
* A girl with waist-length hair had several small braids elegantly twisted and pinned up on her head.
* Several guys with midback-length hair had a pony tail arranged in a particularly handsome style: only the front half of the hair is brought together into a pony tail. The rest is let loose, somewhat constrained from flying around by the pony tail.
There were also dozens of other fabulous longhaired ladies who simply had waist-length or longer hair hanging loosely.
On a slightly different topic, on Friday, I tried a different style. I sort of created it on the fly while listening to blues. I'll describe it by telling you how to create it:
Take a small amount of hair from the front of your head and braid it.
Just behind the first clump of hair, take another clump of hair that is about twice as thick as the original clump of hair.
Divide this clump into two sections.
Braid the two sections and the original braid together.
Repeat until all your hair is used up.
The result is something that looks a little bit like a French Braid but a little more complex. Despite the fact that it's more complex, it's much easier to do (although it takes longer) than a regular French Braid. For those of you who can't do a French Braid, try this style instead.

Hi all. I have been letting my hair grow for a new style, tired of the same old me. It is now about 8 inches past my shoulders, 2 inches on the top and sides, hope to grow the top and sides about 4 more inches. I want a new style that will look feminine, need opinions... my hair is wavy with a perm in the back, I would like to frost, glitz or otherwise add to my already blonde hair. Any suggestions? I must compliment Cath.....who is a regular contributor on this site, for her expertise and for her open mindedness about "unisex styles" that some of us guys have opted for. I had mid back length hair for a number of years, and have loved every minute of it, but recently my girlfriend suggested a new style that would be shoulder length. We went thru the mags and she suggested a Gillian Anderson bob. It took me a while to be convinced, but after reading the messages from Cath with suggestions for different bob styles could work for guys, I got inspired. We went to my girl's friend who is a stylist and I got the works! My hair is done in a long bob and I was given a body wave so that the ends resting on my shoulder would curl under more easily. My girl helps me with the upkeep, and I am becoming pretty good with hot rollers . If it wasn't for reading the astute comments from Cath, I don't think that I could have done it. Thanks a bunch!!!!

Bashful Boy
It has taken me a while, but Ive decided once and for all to let my hair grow out, probably at least to shoulder length. It is starting to fill in nicely, as it started as a buzz last december. I work in a very conservative office and am already getting some grief from people, even though it is always clean and neat. I am looking for suggestions on how to wear it once it finally comes in, How long it will take before I can consider it "long" (fully over ears now), is there any dietary supplements to consider for vigourus hair growth, and last, but not least, what kind of reaction have other people gotten when they went from a life of "conservative" hair to Long Hair. I have always been a supporter of men with long hair and in particular was initially attracted to my current boyfriend because of his shoulder length locks of curly/wavy hair. When we go out together he is always getting compliments and I have to admit I get a bit jealous of this.
Partly out of envy I decided to surprise him and have my hair permed to try and imitate his tresses. A friend has cut my hair for the past three years, but this week I finally plucked up enough courage and found a ladies only salon in town and got an appointment there for the perm. Initially, it all went well and after winding my hair onto the perm rods I was led over to corner of the salon where I was put under a lamp/heater type thing for 15 minutes.
Just as I got settled under there, I saw my boyfriend walk in. I was surprised and wondered what he could want in there (since he did not know I would be in there) and even more shocked when he took his jacket off and one of the stylists put a cape around him. She then proceeded to take him over to a basin and washed his hair and then took him back to her work space. From where he was positioned I knew he could not see me, but I could see him through a mirror and watched as this stylist proceeded to wind his hair onto large rollers.
About half way into doing his hair, my stylist came back to rinse my hair off and neutralise the perm. I asked her if that guy came in often (without letting on I knew him) and she said that he was a regular and that he came in twice a week for a set and had done so for about 6 years.
I was stunned by this since he has been complimented on his hair so many times, but always made out that it was natural (well he never said it wasn't). By the time my hair had been finished he was under the dryer - I don't think he had seen me before I walked up to him (or perhaps he was hoping I had not seen him). He smiled at me but it was obvious from the look on my face that I was mad at him for deceiving me. I am still angry with him now - to think that I went through with the perm just to imitate what I thought was his natural hair. I don't know what bugs me - whether it is because he is a guy having his hair set in a ladies only salon or whether it is the implied deceit. I think that if guys are going to have sets and stuff then they should at least be honest about it.

Thanks so much for the kind words and the great viewpoint on "unisex" styles. As I guess I already mentioned, my girlfriend was the impetus for me to get this style, with of course support from your writings on this hyperboard. As far as acceptance goes, I am a dance major in college and my summer job here in Maine is teaching at a summer arts camp....all inside dance studio teaching.....I teach Ballet, Modern and Jazz dance to loads of kids each day. I believe that everyone likes my hair, because no one has kidded me about it yet. I do find that when I had long hair that I could easily braid it for dance(one ballet instructor even required me to put it up in a bun), now I need to use a barette to keep the hair out of my face. Small sacrifice. I did have a kind of "experience yesterday when my girlfriend and I were walking the mall....I was mistaken for a girl by a salesperson. My mom thinks my hair looks "cute" and has promised to buy me a set of hot rollers for when I go back to school next week. My girlfriend has now imbarked on updating my wardrobe.......so we'll see where that is headed.

I am looking for very small hot (heated) rollers and have had no success. The hair on the top of my head is very short. I am growing it out but want to find very small rollers for the next several months. I do have and use a curling iron but prefer the feel of a heated roller. Any help on brands that are good for 1.5" length hair?

There is an article in this month's Hair & Beauty magazine listing 20 tips to growing your hair. I thought others may be interested in a summary of what was suggested.
1. Have regular trims to avoid split ends.
2. Keep heat styling to a minimum - let your hair dry naturally as much as possible.
3. Make the most of styling tools.
4. Become obsessive about conditioning - including deep conditioning treatments
5. Have a goal. Know ehere you want to go - have a snapshot of what you want to look like.
6. Try in between styles to help you on your way (such as the Rachel cut). Having a definite style means you are less likely to get fed up with it.
7. Avoid chemical processes such as colouring and perming.
8. Going for broke - grow it out in a year only if it grows very quickly.
9. Wear a hat.
10. Dress your hair up to hide scraggy ends.
11. Find the right styling products for you.
12. Protect your hair from sun with products containing UV filters and use a rich conditioner to avoid chlorine damamging hair when swimming (or a swimming cap).
13. Make the most of accessories - use them to secure stray hairs or sections or to detract attention from inadequacies in style.
14. Don't make rash decisions. If you get a sudden urge to have it all chopped off stary away from a salon for at least two weeks - review it again then.
15. Be patient - hair only grows at 0.5" per month - you can't rush this.
16. Try hair extensions - to see if long hair really suits you and to prepare yourself for handling long hair.
17. Eat well and take good care of your health.
18. Strike up a good relationship with your hairdresse - tell them what you are aiming for and get their suggestions and advice.
19. Be careful how you treat your hair when its wet - don't use a brush and do use a detangling conditioner.
20. Keep an open mind - as it grows you may find that your hair is just not suitable for the look you wanted. Be prepared to adapt to your hair and change your long term goals.
This obviously has a female slant to it, but there is also some good advice in here.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but.....ROLLERAMA, the only site on the Web exclusively devoted to guys in rollers, is still in dire needs of contributions. After the site debuted, I received about 15 or 20 e-mails expressing support and thanks, but almost zero contributions. (And most of those were perm pics -- I'm not into perms, but would be willing to add a perm page if there is enough demand).
I know many of you do not have photos to contribute, but over the last year on boards like HairNet, BeautyNet, and this board, I have read many messages from guys who love roller sets, and several of those claimed to have photos. C'mon -- it's time to come out from hiding and contribute so that everyone can share in these images! I find myself thinking that most of the guys who claim to have pics of themselves in rollers and/or the resulting hairdos are a bunch of phoney baloneys. Prove me wrong and contribute something.

Hi, I'm new to the site and enjoy the discussions & suggestions. My question: aren't there other guys out there who enjoy wearing "Alice" headbands? I find this the easiest style of all, esp. when I don't want to put my hair up in a ponytail. I wear leather bands, usually dark blue or black. This seems to still be a gender frontier, which seems ridiculous to me. Any responses from men/women on guys wearing headbands?

Further to my reply to Mike below re: the Coupe Sauvage cut, I am looking for suggestions or images of styles which could be considered as unisex for hair of any length - from the very short (which can by definition be unisex and worn by both men and women) to the very long (and more appropriate to this site). I have a general interest in this area and would appreciate any ideas. For example I have seen the Rachel cut from Friends and the Gillian Anderson cut from the X-Files both been suggested here or on other sites as being great for men While I appreciate that generally this is really asking for styles currently sported by women that could be worn by men as well, any images would be greatly appreciated.

I ate at the Olive Garden last night and noticed that a couple employees had long hair, and one happend to be my waiter. I was very pleased to see a service oriented business not discriminate and I let the manager know this. Like the Webmaster said, if we the customers show our support for long hair in the work place, then little by little it will be more accepted. By doing this, I believe we'll all Grow together. I posted a message earlier that listed long hair friendly places & the Olive Garden is another to be added.
My 15 year old brother wears his hair past his waist. He is very small and he looks feminine. I am trying to get him to cut his hair. Our mother thinks he should leave it long if he likes it that way. Sometimes he will wear a long braid. I think he likes looking like a girl. I have spoken to him several times but he wont listen to me. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi there! Cool site. Question- I have been growing my hair long for a couple years now. It is starting to creep along the top of my back now. The problem is that my hair is naturally wavy and curls up around my ears as well as long tight curls at the ends. Any ideas how i can straighten out my hair a little more. (instead of using mousse)

I think its cool and takes alot of guts to do this. I think its great
that you guys can do somethings like that. Well I've been thinking
about doing getting my hair washed and set and dried. Well I have
a problem though I have short hair about 2inches. Is it possible to
get a roller set with hair as short as mine. Or do you think I can

I havn't written lately beacause I have been busy.I got the job I wanted (yea)so now I'm working in a Longhaired friendly enviroment.Now I have a problem I need to ask other guys who've been growing their hair awhile about.My hair is getting really bushy on top but doesn't seem to be diong anything on the sides. I've been contemplating going to a stylist and getting some of the bulk taken out without getting any of the lentgh cut.In short,basically getting it shaped up. Should I do this or leave it alone? I have straight, thick hair which I am growing from my crown down into a one length do and this hair has just got past my ears. I have bangs which are about half way down my nose. The hair at my back is between collar and shoulder length. I want to try some girly, feminine styles and would like some suggestions of what I could do now and suggestions for styles that I should try to grow into in the future. Any pics would be great.

I've been reading posts now for about 2 months now and I must say Victor your doing a great job with the site.
I have not seen any talk about hair color or highlights. Though my hair is only 4-5 inches I have started getting highlights put in regularly. The feeling of the foils going in is almost as good as a roller set. Talk to your hairdresser about them as a start to more progressive styles.
Also I've noticed alot of questions about various styles, setting, or in general people you have long hair but don't really know what to do with it. I've sold professional beauty supplies for a number of years and my best advise is to get a professional stylist, tell them you want and then go see them every 8 weeks. Your hair will look great and you will enjoy it alot more.

I have thick, straight hair, which is difficult to style despite regular body perms. I am going out for a special evening with my girlfriend next saturday since it is my birthday and she has been trying to tame my hair to no avail. She does not want me to cut it, just able to style it. We discussed this at some length yesterday and in the end she convinced me to try having my hair set into a style that we both liked .
She booked an appointment for me today for next Saturday, in a busy unisex in-store salon. I now have to admit that I am getting very nervous about this, but can't (because it would upset her) and don't really want to cancel it (because I would never know if it worked).
I only have a very vague idea of what is involved in having a set and would appreciate some feedback from women and men who have had this done. What is it like, what is involved, how long does it take and to any guys in particular - do you feel conspicuous in the salon and what is the attitude of other people to you.

Victor and all friends of long hair, I cannot believe I didn't know about this board until now. I absolutely ADORE long hair: mine is nearly to my waist (the longest it's ever been, and I never thought it would get this far) and long hair on men is magnificent! I love naturally "variegated" hair (multi-shaded, light streaks, turning white, etc.)
I work at a university and feel more than a bit alarmed at the current trend of young men getting their hair shaved off. It seems that every time I turn around, another of the young Samsons in my department has gone and shorn himself (and not even saved me a lock!) I know the temptation: some 10 years ago, my own hair was in a punkish crew-cut! I just hope they come to their senses and grow it back out. And if they don't shave it outright, they wear it "Dagwood"-style: SHEESH!
I am debating whether to let my bangs grow out (yes, in a moment of weakness, I cut bangs!) but it is such a terrible ordeal, second only to growing out the hair around the ears! I'm interested in how others have survived this. The only ways I can think of (barrettes and slicking it back) don't appeal. Is the general feeling that bangs detract from otherwise very long hair? I hope this isn't off-topic, as I am a woman.

Last night I went to Shakespeare's Pub, my favorite nighttime hangout. Including myself, there were 6 people in the room. We had hair lengths of butt-length, waist-length, mid-back, 2 shoulder-length, and one about two inches long.
I made a comment to all present that there were two longhairs, three shorthairs, and a bald guy. For some reason everyone thought that was funny except the "bald" guy. He did actually have a very healthy head of hair; it was simply much shorter than what any of the rest of us had.

The hair at the back of my head is now getting on for near shoulder length. However, the ends have started to flick up and stick out. I have also got a similar problem with hair growing past my ears. I have tried using mousse and gel to hold the hair down but my hair is pretty thick and strong and this just doesn't seem to work for the day. Any other suggstions for keeping a neater style.

I would like to grow my hair to sholder length. At present, however,

I enjoy this site very much. My top and back head hair is not very long but I am working on growing a long beard. It seems from reading posts here that those who have long head hair experience the same (or maybe worse) discrimination and unsolicited comments as those of us with beards. I was a tyoical long-haired college student in the 1960s and can remember the flack I got then, which is the same I now get about my 48 year old bearded face.

I have some high speed film at home waiting to be exposed. In preparation for exposing it tonight, last night I went to sixth street with my exposure meter to try to get a feel for the range of exposures I could be expecting. This would help me determine which lens to take.
I eventually settled down at Shakespeare's Pub where a girl commented that she wished she could braid my hair. So I let her. I've never had someone take so long braiding hair before. Anyway, I was playing pool, and my turn was next, so I rushed her for the last part. I took my shots and then looked at the braid. It was pretty uneven and not well done, so when she and her friends left, I undid it.
About 15 minutes later, she and her friends returned. She noticed I had taken out the braid when she saw me putting in a four strand braid. She gave me a look expressing her disapproval. Anyway, I ended up letting her braid my hair again. I told her the first one was uneven, so she did a better job on the second one.
After two o'clock, all the bars close, and everybody is kicked out. I left the bar and hung out with a friend of mine whose hair goes down about to midback. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed some hair walking by. This is just something that grabs my attention like someone setting off a flash in a crowd. Even when you're not looking for it, you can tell where the flash came from. The same thing happens to me with longhair.
Anyway, I turned around to get a better look at the hair. It was about waist length. I commented to my friend to take a look at the hair on that man. It was rather impressive. No sooner had I said that than another man walked by with even longer hair.
His hair was thigh-length and hanging down loosely. He had an even wave all the way down the length of the hair. He looked to be about 6'2" tall, so thigh-length hair on him was really long. I only got a brief look at his face, which was equipped with a goatee.
I should have brought not just my meter but also my camera last night. Well, maybe he'll be there tonight also.
I am off to a fancy dress party tonight and my girlfriend has been trying to do things with my hair to no avail In the end I was put under orders to make an appointment with a salon which I had this evening.
My girlfriend is going as Robin Hood and I, with my longer than average hair, am goingto be her Maid Marion (Okay guys its just for fun!!).
I explained this to the stylist who was really cool about it all and she tried some different opitons. My hair is around 4" on the crown and 6" at the back and is layered.
Initially she tried a french roll but it was too short. Next she tried a single french braid but again the sides were too short to pull up. We discussed a bun, but then she had a brain wave and parted my hair at the back down the middle and did one braid each side - like little braided pig tails. She then hotbrushed the top and sides back. Pinned the side hair into the braids and just backcombed the top. For effect she clipped a little flower onto the top of the crown where the hair met the braids. My girldfriend loved that bit.
I have to admit this is just for fun and I did enjoy it. We are also off to a Vicar and Tarts party in August and both my girlfriend and I are going as tarts - any ideas for a style then would be appreciated - my stylist has already planned some ideas.
I just wonder if any other guys have tried wild and wacky things just for fun and what were the sylist like - the girl I had was great and really got into it.
Hello, everyone. I thought I'd share with all of you a recent experience I had while at the DMV getting the tags on me and my wife's car renewed.
It was a relatively warm Friday, just after noon. Most people were wearing t-shirts and a pair of shorts. I hate even the idea of tanning, so I never wear anything but jeans or slacks. For Friday, I wore my black dress slacks, black button-up long-sleve banded-collar dress shirt, and my favorite pair of grey suspenders. I'd thought about wearing my hair in a pony tail, maybe even putting my black satin ribbon in it for added effect, but I opted to wear it lose and not put nearly as much mousse in it as I've normally done.
Amazingly enough, I discovered less mousse allows the hair to have more body; which, as long as my hair is (almost waist-length all around), looks REALLY nice, and I LOVE feeling it blow back when I walk into the wind.
As I was standing in a VERY long line, a mother and her two daughters walked in and got behind me in the Renewal line. After about 15 minutes of continued waiting, and the daughters had tired of their child-like fidgeting, I over-heard one of them (they couldn't have been more than 10) whisper to the other, "Look at that man's hair. It's LONG, all the way down here". I glimpsed out of the corner of my eye to see that she was rubbing her hand against the back of her waist to emphasize my hair's length to her sister. Then, she asked her mother, "Mommy, is that right?"
Her mother earned respect she might not otherwise have received from me had she whispered anything to her daughters but, "Quiet. It's long because he wants it long."
Without turning to face any of them, I smiled, glad for the fact that this parent was teaching her kids acceptance of, at the very least, men with long hair.
I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas to solve
my lifeless hair problem. Length is currently 4 or 5 inches
below my shoulders and basically all one length. I've tried

I am not too keen on tying my hair back into a little dinky ponytail, but am equally aware that the hair at the back of my neck is beginning to look unkempt. There seems to be a tradeoff between keping your hair tidy and have a reasonable ponytail. What have others found to be a reasonable length to first start wearing one.
I went to the Elephant Room tonight, a jazz club in Austin, the one Clint Eastwood goes to when he comes to Austin (yeah, I ran into him and Kevin Costner at the Elephant Room). Playing tonight were Ta Mere, a group that I'm just learning about, but that has at least one Frenchman and one Nicaraguan, as well as a few other musicians, all of whom have a great sense of humor, even when a drunk dancer falls on their instuments and breaks them.
What does all this have to do with hair? Funny you should ask. Well, this band played music which I characterize as coming from Nicaragua and south. Although people don't normally dance at the Elephant Room, this sort of music naturally predisposes people to dance. There were a lot of good dancers tonight. There are a few things I noticed about them.
* They were unusually good at dancing
* Contrary to normal, the men were better than the women
* The hair came in all shapes and sizes (OK, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit)
The first hair that caught my eye was Albertico's. He's from south Texas, and has straight, black hair down to his waist. The first couple times I saw him, he was either headed to the phone or to the restroom.
The next hair I noticed was the almost waist-length straight hair of a natural blonde woman dancing with a black man with a buzz cut. The couple dancing next to them was squeezing them into a space that was right next to my table, so I could not help watching them.
There were other couples that danced with rather normal hair. Then Albertico invited a girl to dance with him. She had hair about an inch long and artificially light blonde. His was naturally black and down to his waist. They danced well together, right in front of my table, Albertico taking the lead, showing the girl a few moves. Every now and then he'd twirl around in a full circle, and his hair would spread out, almost brushing across the girl's face.
The music and the dancing ended to soon. On my way out, I walked passed Albertico and casually mentioned that tonight, contrary to what I normally observe, the men danced better than the women, and that he was no exception. Rather than blow me off as most people would, he engaged me in conversation. We talked about many things given the amount of time we were actually talking. We parted after the seed of a friendship had been planted. Perhaps I will post a picture of him soon, perhaps even as the featured Samson.
i would like to know which is more accepted in a man: long hair or earrings?
since i've seen many guys wearing earings on both ears, even at their jobs, i would like to know what is more accepted when hiring personnel: guys with earrings or with long hair????

an observant Sikh. My faith requires observant Sikh men and
women to maintain uncut hair. For men, this means no haircuts
and no shaving. We "put up" our hair, and cover it with a turban
when we leave the privacy of our own home. At home, we can let
our hair down, and do not have to wear a turban.
I am happy to read the messages here about how to care for and how
to wear long hair. Such information is not widely available for
men as it is for women in American society. Best wishes to all.

I have wanted to have very long hair for a long time. I have been unable to because of my extremely strict job dress code. I saw a kid (12 to 14 yrs.)the other day with a long, thick ponytail very high on the back of his head and the hair below the ponytail was buzzed. I instanly started to think of that hairdo on me. At my job I have the option of wearing a baseball cap, so I could get this hairdo and just hide it in the baseball cap during work. My question is has anyone else seen this hairstyle? Would it look good on a guy over 16?(I'm 28) Is a ponytail the only option? Does it look stupid down? Or should I just forget about it.I would appreciate any opinions.
Don: Your pics at the Rollerama site are great! Isn't there some way to cover your face (your choice not ours) so we can see the front and sides of these great styles. Also if the webmaster of the site can do something so that the enlargement feature would make the pics even larger so the details could be seen that would be even better. I'm new to this computer stuff so I don't know what's possible and what's not sorry. One last request--- some "step-by -step" pics would be fantastic.

Thanks to those who offerred their support to my earlier post. Our new uniforms were delivered yesterday and we had to wear them from today. Dawn was right, the girls hated the uniforms and hair peice as well, but I suppose in my moments of reasonableness I also sympahtise with the comment made by Nurse Noir.
No compromise with my bosses was possible -they said that if they changed the rules for me then the girls would also complain. They also said that the policy was not sexist, but just emphasised that they wanted all staff with long hair to wear it in a neat and uniform' way.
The bow on the clip was not as big was I thought it was going to be, but it feels enormous when you are self conscious about it. I had a few sniggers and smirks from customers, but actually only one girl said something to my face - which I won't repeat here.
I suppose I will get used to this in time, as I said before I cannot afford to give up my job at the moment - it pays above average.
Dawn suggested getting my hair cut into a style (perhaps one length) that was just around the collar length. Does anyone have any thougths on this or suggestions for a style.

Is fine hair 'styleable', would a wave / perm help - any ideas before I cut the whole lot off, which would make me VERY depressed.

I have been growing my hair for about the past 8 months, but with no particular goal in mind - I just wanted to grow a short style out. I have recently decided that I want to now grow my hair to shoulder blade length or longer.
A friend of mine who works in a UK college in fashion has asked me to write an article for an in-house magazine on growing long hair - in particular from my own perspective.
However, partly as encouragement to me and mostly so I can give her an even better article I would like to generalise this a bit more and discuss other peoples experiences as well. I would like feedback from men and women who have grown their hair long.
- why did you first start growing your hair long,

I am new to the web and stumbled across this great site. I have long hair which I love to curl. I usually curl my hair with heated rollers or steam rollers after washing it and blowdrying. Sometimes (usually on a Sunday if I'm staying home) I'll wet set my hair after washing it. I leave the rollers in all day and comb it out in the evening. I can achieve some great, glamorous looks -- long loose curls and waves -- just like the women's styles of the forties through sixties. I saw that others who share my interest in rolling their hair to creat beautiful curls and glamorous looks were thinking of setting up a chat site. Is there one? How do I get there?
I love to wash hair. I´m looking for guys and girls to give them a great shampoo or to get a great shampoo or to change some pictures, just for fun or to chat about this passion.
I placed a post over a month ago and got some advice from Jenny, which was really great. She suggested that I grow many of my layers out and try to get a better shape to my hair before continuing to grow it. At this point I was wondering about going for shoulder length hair.
When I last had a trim, the stylist shaped my hair much better and the hair is now growing from the crown down just reaching my ears at the moment. Some side hair is covering the ears. I had intended that the back be cut back a lot more to try and get a more even shape to the style but she did not cut it back as much as I wanted. I have to say that I am glad though now.
The reason why I am writing this is that last night I decided that I am absolutley committed to growing my hair for at least the next two years and possbly beyond. I want my hair at least mid-back in length.
My hair is current between collar and shoulder length at the back, passed my ears at the sides and I am growing my hair from the crown down (and it has just passed the tops of my ears).
Bearing my overall aim in mind, the questions I have and would appreciate any advice on this are as follows:
1. Should I just go for one style now that will grow out to the length I want with little adjustment. For example, grow my hair into a one length style and then just grow it from there. OR, should I go for different styles at different lengths and stages of development, say a bob type cut initially (like Gillian Anderson), then going for a mdeium length style and then finally a much longer style. Can anybody suggest any styles for these different stages.
2. Should I keep my bangs or grow them out. If the latter has anybody got any advice for keeping hair under control and out of my eyes as I do this.
3. Should I keep my hair layered or go for a one length do.
4. Any tips for actually growing and maintaining the rate of growth and condition of hair.
5. Any other suggestions.

I currently work serving tables for a large resturant chain. I have around shoulder length hair that I have been tying back for work into a loose ponytail. However yesterday I found out that our company has just introduced a new dress code and as part of this they have decreed that anyone who has longer than collar length hair has to wear it covered using a company standard accessory that they will supply as part of a new uniform. This is a large clip, which is used to gather the hair, with a big red bow on it and a hair net to gather the loose hair from the ponyt tail up into. I am OBVIOUSLY apprehensive about this since it will not look cool, but I need the job to pay my bills. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions that I can offer my boss as a compromise - I have no idea whther they will agree but it is worth a go. They plan to introduce these new uniforms as from late next week when they have supplied them to all the chains.

I think I followed the directions on the mIRC homepage for downloading it (all 813,000 bytes). Everything seemed to be going okay. Then when I went into windows and opened the file manager, mIRC502S.exe was nowhere to be found. What did I do wrong? I'm eager to get that software up and running. Can U help?
Victor, with reference to the photographs of styles shown on the Mens Long hair site, could you explain how to do the two up styles on the top row, right hand side (sty2.jpg and sty3.jpg) and also the style on the second row, extreme right (spanish.jpg).
Can anyone recommend a good salon deep conditioning treatment for keeping long hair in good health & how often should it be done.
While reading the posts about dress code at a restaurant, the thought occurred to me that decision-makers may consider input from customers as part of the decision-making process. We can possibly make an impact here, but we need some information. What does everyone think of an information exchange for the purpose of publishing information about which companies have policies that are not hair friendly, and the associated contact information.
It is obvious when a company has a liberal policy about hair length (the companies with longhairs as employees). It is not obvious when a company has a strict short hair policy. You don't typically notice the absence of something. This simple fact causes complaint letters typically to be directed to only one side. I think this should be changed.
Also, I think comments from customers will be more powerful than comments from disgruntled employees.

I have been growing my hair from a shortish stye for the past 8 months and I am trying to grow the hair from the crown and sides to one length. I put my hair at the back into a pony tail for work and the sides are now sufficiently long that this looks a bit out of place unless they are tied back as well. However, the problem is that not all the hair is long enough to reach the pony tail so I end up with hair that I put back just behind the ear. This hair keeps slipping out from behind my hair and springs out sideways making my hair look a mess.
Are there any tips for keeping this hair in place until it is all long enough to tie back.

I am about to start doing competitive horse riding during the summer, mainly eventing and dressage. I have hair which is about shoulder blade length and I need to keep it secure and out of the way during the competition. I have seen many of the women eventers wearing their hair either in buns or using a sort of net under their hats to keep just the back hair in place. Does anyone know about the type of net that is used and how it is secured to the hair. Where could I get one from. The net option sems a lot easier to do than a bun, but how comes the hair does not work its way through the net and look all straggly.

I am going to be moving to France for a few years soon. As such, I would like a style that fits in with what is currently popular there. I have noticed in the past that European men tend to either wear a longer more unisex style, or very short styles - is this observation true. Does anyone know how well long hair on men is tolerated in France, or is it more popular than the UK/US.

i'm a guy with very short hair, which is starting to fall. i would like to let it grow long but i don't like to see my hair fall; by having it short this is less noticeable. I would like to know if i should wait till i'm half bald to let my hair grow and look like one of those men with long hair on the sides and back, or should i let it grow now while it stills keep falling. Is it nice for a half bald man to wear his hair long?

My hair is well into my shoulder blades and all one length. It is straight and I mostly wear it in a ponytail during the day. I have had it long for about five years now, but have never really done anything with it. Now I am getting a bit fed up with the length and my boring hairstyle. I don't really want to get much of the length cut out, but I need suggestions for a style that I can wear loose, but is also versatile so that I can do different things to it. In particular I am thinking of cutting my hair drastically at the front into some bangs arounf nose length or shorter.. Has anybody got any ideas for styles or cutting suggestions.

From what i've seen on the Web there are people who don't like it and say it's worth than having all long hair. Others think it looks better and tidier than long hair because it's kept short on the sides and on the front. Any opinions regarding the mullet? Why is it called like that?

My ISP has decided to implement some great new technology in partnership with Southwestern Bell Telephone. As a consequence, I am finding it very difficult to do anything consistent on line. Things tend to expire quickly.
This technology was touted to us something like this: Now, when you dial in, the modem will transfer to your local area. I can't help picturing squirrels running around town on the phone lines with little modems on their backs.
Anyway, what seems to be happening is that the squirrels get hungry and drop the modem for a nut, thereby leaving me hanging. The hung computer remains until I abort whatever program is hanging.
Suffice it to say, this is preventing an update to The Men's Long Hair Site as well as preventing me from effectively maintaining this board. I hope the problems get resolved soon. Also, I hope the squirrel doesn't get hungry before I press the POST MESSAGE button.

There is now no excuse for all those guys who claim to have photos of themselves in rollers and/or various frilly hairstyles -- here is a place to show them off and see others as well. Everyone who has this interest will benefit from keeping this web page going by contibuting their pics or stories (PG-rated, please, to keep Geocities happy).

Question: at what length does a guys hair move from being acceptable to society to hair that is considered too long for a man. Is it past the collar or ears, or is it shoulder length hair. Perhaps you ould tell me what your experience has been - when did you get nagged at for your hair being too long.
I have about shoulder length hair (still growing) and have worn it either loose or in pony tails mostly. More recently I have tried some braids, but I am now getting more confident about trying new things and experimenting. I have read the previous posts about the use of some hair accessories by guys and would like to know how people have got on using these things and what the reaction of other people to this is like. In particular I would like to use them to either keep hair off my face, or putting the back up.
The types of things I am considering trying are barrettes, hair claws, side combs, hair clamps, pony rings, Alice bands and anything else anyone can suggest. Also can someone tell me whether guys with long hair generally use hair grips, bobby pins etc to keep hair secure and tidy for styling esp. when doing braids.
I have been growing my hair since i was 16 and my parents could no longer tell me what to do. For the last 2 years the length has been around my mid back. I have had had it trimmed and its thick and in good condition. I have now decided that i just wanna keep growing it down past my butt. I know this is a lot harder than doing what i have done so far and its more difficult to keep the hair healthy. Does anyone have any tips for doing this, or can share there experiences in doing it.
At Scarborough Faire, there was a stand selling what they called hair slides. This is nothing but a string of leather with beads on it. I guess you would make one following these steps:
1. Take a strand of leather of suitable length and put a knot in one end.
2. Add one end bead, followed by two regular beads followed by one end bead.
3. Put a knot in the other end.
4. Arrange the beads so that there is a regular bead and an end bead on each end.
5. Fold the leather strip in half.
6. Put a suitable number of regular beads over the doubled strip of leather.
You now have a hair slide. To use the hair slide follow these steps:
1. Gather a portion of hair from the front of the head into a sort of pony tail and pass the end loop of the slide over the hair. Slide the bead as far as it will go to hold firmly onto the hair.
2. Gather another portion of hair as you would for a French braid (only this is MUCH easier), and add it to the previous section. Now take the portion of leather between the first bead (which you just moved into position) and the second bead. This portion of leather consists of two strips held together on either end by a bead. Pass the hair through this, cross the strips under the hair, pass the hair through again, and tighten the second bead.
3. Repeat step #2 until you have run out of beads.
4. After the last bead, simply tie a half hitch.
This is very attractive. I hope to post a picture soon.
Guys, oh, man, have I been stupid for the last 7 years....
I checked out some info on long hair maintenance on another site the other night, and found out that it's very BAD to use a BRUSH on your hair, especially when it's still wet. I've been using brushes since the day I started letting my hair grow, and always manage to find myself having to empty the bristles of broken hairs after brushing. Tonight, I bought myself a wide-toothed, smooth comb (the kind that don't have ediges on the teeth where both sides of the comb have been molded together), specially designed to detangle both wet and dry hair.
I used it for the first time tnight, and even though it's going to take time to repair the frizziness caused by brushes, I could actually feel a difference in my hair after using the comb in place of the brush. The comb was much gentler and broke fewer hairs than I have ever broken with brushes in the same amount of time it takes me detangle and style it.
I'm going to be scheduling an appointment, soon, with a hair salon near where I live who specializes in helping people grow and maintain long hair (they're called Salon Design). They're expensive, but I know my hair would appreciate the new-found extra care I've started giving it. The last time I had my split-ends cut (7 months ago), I did it myself. I'm finding myself thinking that that was a mistake, but my hair doesn't seem any worse for the wear. I'm going to start having my hair professionally done again, in an effort to help get it to my desired length with healthier results and improved speed of growth.
Bottom line: If you're using a brush now, throw it away and switch to a comb (wide-toothed, with no edging). Your hair will thank you for it. If I didn't know any better, I would swear I could heard my hair cheering for joy when I combed it tonight after showering (grin).

Wear your hair in a pony tail, and tuck it down inside the back of your shirt. Be sure to hide the bulge with a suit or sports coat, or else the the fact that you have long hair will be even more evident.
By hiding the pony tail, I've noticed potential employers have been more appreciative of the effort to comform with any strict dress codes they may have. If they inform you that just hiding the tail if you're hired won't be good enough for the job, then you have a decision to make.
I wore my tail inside my shirt when I interviewed for my current job, and when I asked them what their dress code was like (NEVER EVER EVER ask them if they allow long hair on men. Ask them simply what the policy is on their dress code), the interviewer told me that, since the job I was applying for was taking phone calls from customers all day, their code was casual business and that long hair is allowed on men as long as it's kept neat and clean. They hired me two weeks later, and I celebrated my 1 year anniversary last February.

I have been comming back to this board on a daily basis and I just want to thank everyone for their encouragement.We longhairs(or in my case-soon to be longhair,again)have to stick together.There have been a lot of strides forward in longhair being accepted in the workplace and in society in general,but we still have a long ways to go.Nyghtfall,Walter,Paul,Longhaired Warrior,Andrew-you guys I especially want to thank! I have felt a little guilty about something though and I want to clear the air.It's about the comment I made to Mark Richards. Mark,if you read this,I'm sorry that I came on so strong about your brothers hair.I didn't mean to sound mean,and I didn't mean to tell you what to do,it's just that, for me I have been bemused by long hair since I was a child.But at that time I knew it was fantasy because my dad(whom I love very much-even if we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things,one of which is hair)used to make me get it cut when it got,to his marine standards,too long.When I would protest he would say "when you move out you can grow it so long you have to part it to take a dump,but as long as you're living in my house you're getting it cut"(I've cleaned up what he actully said).Later when I did move out,I didn't get it cut for about 3-4 years.It felt wonderful! anyway the point I think that I and,judging from the posts,a lot of the other guys are trying to say Mark is:be supportive of his decision.If this is a phase then he'll grow out of it.If not,then love him and his hair for that's a part of who he is.

Hi, I am an amateur dramatic actor with mousy brown just above shoulder length hair - all one length. I am playing two roles in the next few months - the first is a play set in Roman times and in the second part I play a Samurai warrior.
Could someone please advise me how to do the braid that was typical of ancient Romans - I have looked at pictures etc and it just seems to go around the hair line but I cannot make out where it starts or finishes.
Also does anybody have any ideas about what I could o for a Samurai, I was thinking of something like a top-knot - how do I do that. Also I need to dye my hair black for this part, can i get colourants that will wash out more or less straight away in this colour, or must it be semi-permanent.
If any of you are facing or have faced discrimination from family or Christians regarding long hair, I suggested clicking on the liink titled "Should Men Have Long Hair?", reading the article, and/or printing it out for reference. I did tonight, and wrote a humorous letter to go with it and sent it to my mother (grin). The first line of my letter to her read "NOTE: Please read this letter with a dash of humor and a giggle in your voice". I wanted to let her know that even the Bible supports men with long hair. I didn't want her to think I was bashing her beliefs. I love her too much to want to do that.
As soon as I include the information in the FAQ I will implement a new guideline for this site. No messages that are simply requests to email pics. There are other avenues for that. If, in the future, I see messages whose sole content is e-mail of pictures solicitation, I will promptly remove these messages. If you would like to exchange photographs, submit what you have to me and I will post them. If they are not suitable to be posted on this site, I'd rather not have the e-mail contact here either.
The real reason for this decision is that it is my feeling that such posts are not productive (at least to the general readership of this board). They are simply a waste of space.

My boyfriend has way past shoulder length hair which is slightly wavy but it looks limp. I have been trying to convince him to let me roll it up to get a new romantic type style with flowing curls but he is not convinced that setting hair on rollers can be for "straight" guys. C'mon lads help me out here -there are are a number of messages about guys who have their hair set, but no pics. There are lots of images of women with their hair in rollers (see the link) who are not embarassed so can some of you help me out here and lets get those pics on the web.

I want to tell you guys what ever happened with me at work yesterday.
I work for one of the largest international airline in the world, wich has his headquartes in the USA, where during courses I saw for many times men working with long hair.
Last week we started to preparing a new interview for candidates. As a leader agent at the reservations dept., observing the supervisors, the human resources agent were very busy, I started to help everyone with new ideas and a lot of work. Last Monday was a national holiday in my country and as I told them I went to the office to do my next day work and finish the forms for the interview. I gave my name to them as a volunteer to participate during the interview as one of the interviewers. My manager was very proud of my work and good will, and everything was going ok.
In the morning we had the first interview and everything was great, but the nest group on the afternoon, I was called from the human resources agent and one of my supervisors telling me I couldn't participate on the other interview because the general sales manager told them I shouldn't be there because of my ponytail. He said it wasn't good for the image of the company, if the candidates see someone with long hair.
Since I started to grow my hair (in accordance with my manager) I received a lot of nice compliments about my elegance in where a suit with my hair held in a well done small ponytail.
I was very shocked and depressed about his opnion, because of the humiliation and prejudice that he showed with his attitude. Prejudice is a crime in my country and I could do something against that, but I think this is not the point. I told if the problem was have a ponytail and wear the uniform I could use another suit, but he stressed that I would cause some kind of damage to the company's image. Well, nobody care about how hard I had worked on that, or the quality of my work in a daily basis, but my hair. This is a kind of frustrating thing to feel, especially when nobody gives you any help.
I still hope one day those attitudes really get a stop. Probably Hittler started with this kind of behavior...
I have recently started re-growing my hair and its now about 5-6 inches in length, I am trying to grow the layers much longer and need advice on a style that will keep it reasonaly presentable while letting it grow. My hair is thick and straight, but I have had a body perm put in to give it some lift - however, this tends to drop out fairly quickly. Any ideas on how to keep the perm in and styles would be appreciated.
Also, I have had my hair braided/plaited before by a stylist and it looked and felt great. I am very interested in other ideas for using accessories and putting hair up and noted some of the ideas on this page. However, is there any chance that a step by step guide as to how to do these styles for a beginner could be added to the site - perhaps with pictures. Perhaps the lady visitors to this site or girlfriends could also come up with some new ideas for using accessories that have not yet been discussed here.

Me and my new girlfriend both have hair around mid back length and we love to braid each others hair. She is a lot better than me at it, but we can both do simple braids and french plaits etc.
We would like some suggestions for more complicated styles (the harder the better - we just love doing it). Does anyone have any suggestions, can recommend books or magazines or other websites. We would like not only pictures of the styles but also some instructions.
I have near shoulder length hair and recently got a new job. My employer agreed that I did not need to cut it, but has insisted that I must wear it in a smart and formal style while at work. Due to the nature of the work it also must not go beyond collar length and hence a ponytail is not suitable. Any suggestions please.

Here are instructions for using IRC (Internet Relay Chat). You will need to download some IRC software. The most popular, and the one that I use is mIRC . Once you have downloaded the software and loaded it, you must select a server. There are several groups of servers with a common name. Since two of the hair channels I know of are already on Undernet, I suggest meeting there. Simply select a server with the name Undernet in it, and you will connect to the Undernet network. After successfully connecting to a server, you have to join a channel. Do this using the /join command. Following the name mentioned in the parent message to this one, you would type /join #longhairedmen. Notice the # key. This is required for most channels.

Advice please.
I have shoulder length hair, all one length, which I have been growing for some time now, but most of the time I have kept it tied back into a pony tail. I feel like going for a much more distrinctive cut now which will allow me to wear it loose all the time. I want something that is unisex and the Rachel haircut from Friends has been suggsted to me. Can a guy get away with wearing this style and what is involved in maintenance. Also can you vary the style at all once its cut.
I would like to start setting my hair at home, but feel overwhelmed by all the techniques and different types of equipment available. For example should I use heated rollers, or do a wet-set, or even maybe use rags. There even seems to be different types of rollers for heated sets (e.g. wax and steam) and wet-sets, (e.g.velcro or magnetic and what about the Clairol type twist and snap-shut rollers).
Should I use a setting lotion (recommendations please) or mousse. Must I use a hood dryer or can I blow dry it with the rollers in, or is it best if I leave it to dry naturally. What is it like sleeping with rollers in.
Any tips for combing out would also be helpful.
I would be really grateful if anyone can offer advice on the questions above. By the way I have just above shoulder length hair which is layered and pretty straight.

I didn't have the guts to grow my hair long when I was younger, and now that I'm in my 40's and (might) have the guts, my hair is thinning. It figures. At this point, I guess, I'm reluctant to let it grow because I feel I might draw attention to the fact that I don't have as much of it as I once did. Any opinions on this? By the way, I just came across this site, and I think it's great. I only wish there were more pictures. I've always loved long hair on men, especially when a guy isn't afraid to do something with it besides yank it back into a ponytail. There's one picture on the image page -- I think it's named "spanish"? -- of a guy with dark hair with braids on the sides ... sigh. Lots of women would kill for hair that gorgeous.

I have been following the posts both here and on the hairnet about men using rolloers and think that there is nothing wrong at all with it. My wife has been setting and blowdrying my hair for years. I've also had it done in the salon from time to time. So for all that want to do it here's my vote.

I most of you are familiar with the problem I had at work a month ago.
The solution I found for that was to buy a short hair wig to go to work. So I did. The first day after my vacations at work, I came to work with a dark short hair style wich made everybody shocked. It was really funny because most of the guys didn't figured out I was wearing a wig, they thought I cut and dyed my hair darker than it was before, after the first week, I've got an authorization for don't wear that on fridays because it's our casual day and as I don't have to wear the uniform and as now everybody knows that it was a fake hair, there was no reason for wearing that on fridays too. I really think in the future they will allow me to wear my hair long again held in a ponytail, since everyone knows I still have my longer hair it I will keep it growing for the next two years at least. Well, I'm happy with that solution, it was creative, funny, bizarr, but I still can be myself during my days off and after work. Tell me your ideas about that.

I have a chin length bob at the moment which I am still growing. I would like some suggestions for up-styles for both formal and informal occassions.
A couple of days ago I posted a message indicating that I would love to get e-mails on either of two subjects: hair wet set on jumbo rollers, or huge, very heavily teased and lacquered bouffant hairdos. My e-mail is now working and I'd love to hear from anyone interested in either or both subjects. I have lots of great stories to share, and would love to hear yours. I also have some videos and pictures, a few of them quite unique, that I might be interested in trading and/or loaning. Are there places where guys can go, even though they don't want their hair cut, just to get advice on styling, products, perms, coloring, etc? It would be nice just to have a professional's attention for a while, trying new styles and stuff, without having to get it cut. How do you find this type of salon and what do you ask for when you make an appointment? If anyone knows of a place that specializes in men's hair in the Philly area, please let me know.

When I was young I wore my hair long. At some point my mom started to braid my hair and later she talked me in to letting her set it. I have been doing it ever since. One of my favorite styles is a french braid. I love having my hair done in a salon. Sometimes I will wear a large bow to hold the braid. The woman in the salon will often comment about how lovely my hair looks and that I should of been a girl. I dont care what they say I just love womans hair styles. Do others feel the way I do?
I am considering seeking new employment soon, but have one fear - THE CUT for the INTERVIEW! Not having been in this situation since having long hair - some may recall that I had it cut in a below shoulder "Jennifer Anniston Friends" style several months ago, and it is now growing out again -
I am curious what you all may have experienced interviewing in the current market, and what you may have done to minimize the long hair effect. I do not really want to go for the cut, its taken me a long time to get here - any suggestions, style options or alternatives for a professional look?

I have been growing my hair for about two years now and it is about shoulder-blade length and very thick. I am six foot-five with a slim build (no muscles to speak of). I have found that the combination of my height and hair length is an instant attention getter. Male and female, young and old. I like this board and the sharing of views about long hair on men.
I have had to experiment on treatments and hair preps to get the effect I want. I wear the hair loose most of the time except when it is hot then I put it in a ponytail. (I live in the southeast)
I don't blow-dry my hair. I let it air-dry and I use salon shampoos and conditioners. Results vary greatly with the products. One of my favorite shampoos is 'Back to Basics' Herbal-- about $15 bucks for a month's supply. A good condtioner is 'ABBA' leave-in, use a tiny amount -- really expensive.. A bottle will last a year though. Since my hair is black, I use a spray on sunscreen if I'm outside all day..

I am new to the "net" and thrilled to find this and a couple of other sites which are devoted to or include references to women (and men) with their hair wet set on rollers. My own favorite is hair wet set on super jumbo rollers. If there is interest, I'd be happy to go into more detail (much, much more detail, if anyone wants, either on this site or by e-mail. If anyone wants to e-mail me, the address is amli@erols.com (but please wait until the week of 5-19, as my e-mail will not be activated until then). Meanwhile, I'd like to add several additions to Alan's (and others') list of roller sets in movies, etc. Two really good movie "hair sets": (1) "Coming Home," with ...(I forget her name; she's married to Ted Turner). There is a really exciting scene when she emerges from her bedroom into her living room with her hair wet set on huge rollers, a perfect, glistening set. The only problem is the room is mostly lighted by the TV which is on, so you don't get a very brightly lit shot. One interesting feature: there is a side view close up where you can see that her rollers are actually Olympia beer cans, a common way of setting hair on super jumbo rollers in the sixties. (2) A movie starring the witchlike TV personality Elvira (it may be called "Elvair, Queen of the Night"). Near the beginning of the film, just after the credits, Elvira drives into this small southern town, where her car breaks down with many loud bangs. A crowd gathers and she is confronted by two local townswomen, both of whom have their hair wet set on very large rollers. The only thing that keeps this one from perfection is the rollers are not all one sixe, somewhat ddetracting from the effect -- but still great closeups, especially rear closeups, of a middle aged woman with her hair in jumbo rollers. One other item worth special mention: there is a Spanish language pop video called "Papa sin Catsup" with incredible super jumbo roller shots. This message is too long already, so I'll tell more about it later, but if anyone can get it in the meantime, they will be thrilled. The singer's name is Gloria Trevi (or Tevi). Sorry for being so long winded -- but the topic of hair set on jumbo rollers gets me so excited I can't stop. Hey everyone, I won one for all us long hairs out there. I received a speeding ticket for $320 for speeding in a school zone in my little redneck town. I decided to fight the ticket because some things just didn't add up.
1) I got the ticket at 3:20 pm. The 2 nearest schools own zones end at 2:40pm & 2:55pm.
2) The cop while writing the ticket stated the school zone light may not have been flashing.
3) The cop was hiding behind a building at the time.
When I got to tell the judge my side, he didn't care much for defense number 3. When I mentioned number 2 he became interested but the cop said he did say that but then he looked back and saw that the light was flashing (he was Bull S'ing), he had pulled me over after the road had curve and unless he was superman he couldn't see thru trees and buildings. But the real killer was defense number 1, I quoted Fl. Statute 316.1895 regarding school zones & proved that the school zone, by law, should not have been enforced. The judge ran to his chambers, got his book, read it, looked the cop right in the eye and said, "he's right, it's pretty clear". Case Dismissed.
You could of knocked him over with a feather he was so shocked. Hopefully I got a little more respect for us long hairs, at least I proved that we are smarter than we look.

My hair is naturally dark ask blonde and i tried to lightne it once and now i have lighter hair but it has alot of red and brassyness toit. does anybody know of a products that actually works like it says it does, i want to totally get rid of the red and stuff.

My hair is completely shaven on my scalp but very long on my upper lip. I'm one of those men that feel proud to sport those huge bushy, unrully moustaches. Had it for ten years and probably will never mow it.
I read posts of men asking for tips on how to eat with a long stache.
The rules are simple:
1. Stop eating food without utensiles
2. Open wide to avoid touching your stache
3. Don't put too much food on your fork
and finally...
4. always keep lots of napkins handy
There,s no miracle technique and if you wipe it often, getting a little ffod on it is no big deal...

I am a waist length man looking to talk to other long haired guys with simular interest.
Back in my long hair days, instead of tying my hair back with a simple rubber band, I would occasionally use a plain barrette. This got some interesting looks, but it had the advantage of spreading out my hair some, and frankly, I didn't mind the looks from some.
It seems as though I do not see many men opting for barrettes, although ponytails seem to be popular.
Any other men wear barrettes out there??

I went to a Pacific Islander Festival today (Sat. 5/3/97). Because it was in the LA area, there were not only the expected groups, like Hawaiians and Samoans, but there were also groups from Tonga and the Cook Islands. Great food, and interesting dancing and singing.
The folks over at the Long Hair Site probably have gone ga-ga over all the island ladies with ass-length hair. Tatoo fanatics would have also found plenty of interest.
There were also quite a few Pacific Island men with long hair. I saw a couple of them with their hair in buns, and I saw a couple of them with double braids ( I've done single braids, but I don't think I will ever have the nerve for double braids).
I also found a Hawaiian thing-a-ma-bob for taking care of my ponytail. There was a vendor booth that had a bunch of l-o-n-g thin combs made of bamboo. They were 3/4" to 2" wide, and 5" to 12" long, with either two or three wide tines. They were cut from fairly large pieces of bamboo, so they are *almost* flat, but still with an obvious curve. If someone was good at wood-working, they could probably make something similiar with any light, strong wood.
To use the combs, you wrap your ponytail with your finger, then curl the ponytail around itself, and finish it off by pushing the comb through this "bun". I saw two different guys using these combs.

Hey everyone, my first message. Great site!
My hair has grown down now to my elbows. Its staight, thicker and all cut one length. I have been growing it long for about the last three and a half years, since I was 20.
I great style I have been doing for a couple months is to pull my hair back, twist it fairly tight, gather it up and use a large hair claw to make it into a bun on the back of my head. I like the look a lot and its easy to make look good! I've bought about five different color claws.
This summer I'm going to get serious about putting on a hair contest for men. Please post any comments you might have about it here. If you prefer, you can comment via e-mail at victor@victorengel.com. I would be particularly interested to hear from others who have been involved in coordinating a contest of any kind. Let me know of pitfalls, things to look out for, etc. I want this to be a success, so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

This is a great site. Currently, I have short hair. Right now, it would normally be time for a haircut. But I don't like it too much short and I was thinking of growing it long. Not long like to my waist or anything but maybe to my shoulders, or at least thicker. Also thinking of growing a goutee with it. What a great site! Can't believe I hadn't found it
before tonight. I'm in my mid 30s and I have wanted
to grow my hair for a long time. About six weeks ago
I finally decided that I didn't care what anybody
else said, especially my job, and I'm going for it.
It's my hair! Years ago I tried growing it and got
frustrated when it reached that in-between stage and
so I ended up cutting it. I'm not going to do that
this time. So any words of encouragement for a guy
who wants to experience the kind of long hair that

I dropped in on HairNet today, and I am amazed to see there are still a major number of male roller set aficianados hanging there, enduring the snide comments of the shaving and buzzcut crowd that seem to dominate that board now (yes, "Advice Guy" is still there!). In the meanwhile, this board is at a low point again. Do these people simply not know about the more supportive atmosphere here? (Victor, do you plug this board regularly over there?) Or is it perhaps that they want the contact with women that they get there and that is lacking here? (Maybe the very name "MEN'S Long Hair Site" turns them off and they think their more feminine desires will be ridiculed?) All said, though, it's still the same -- lots of guys who say they do roller sets all the time, and some claim to have photos, but no one ever comes through with any pix. Personally, I think most of the roller set guys are merely acting out fantasies and really don't have any photos to share at all. (Perhaps they are like me -- I ditched the few pix I had of myself in rollers and updos when I was married to an -- ouch -- quite unsympathetic wife some years back...now I have hair that's 1/3 "flesh" color, unfortunately....)

I am going to get a trim this Saturday. I have a round face and
hair length between my chest and elbows. My hair is coarse, has alot
of body, and is one length, except for grown out bangs down to my
shoulder blades. I would like to keep my length and be able to pull
my hair (at least most of it) back into a ponytail for work-related
reasons. What kind of hairstyle should I get? Or should I just stay
with my current hairstyle? Your suggestions are appreciated.

Does anyone ever watch E! for "Fashion File", "Video Fashion Weekly", VH-1's "FT" or CNN's "Style". These programs very often feature women, usually models in rollers. In fact, "Fashion File" has tremendous segways to commercials featuring women in rollers and getting set ! Many times models are interviewed while in rollers or under dryers.

I love your site! i'm presently growing out my hair (again!) but this time, i'm sticking with it. I leave the front and sides short, but the back is ponytail length now (although i leave it free most of the time) and i'd like it to at least the middle of my back!

My girlfriend has suggested that I start using her hood dryer for conditioning treatments (I'm shoulder length with mega split ends !).
This is the first time I've had my hair this long - does anoyne else in the same position regularly get 'under the hood' for conditioning treatments or styling ?
I had some difficulty this weekend cleaning up the board. I didn't want to simply hose all old messages. There are certain threads I wished to save. The problem was that the administration program to remove messages produces a table with radio buttons to mark messages to delete. The only option that allowed me to select threads was sorted with the most recent message first. All the browsers I have immediate access to have a limit of 512 radio buttons per form (evidently). When this limit is exceeded, the submit button is absent. This meant I was unable to delete the OLDEST messages (or any messages at all, unless I selected by date [not threaded]). The solution was to rewrite some of the code so that I could see only the OLDEST 200 message details (this results in 400 radio buttons).
Anyway, the reason I am telling you all this is that I have decided to eliminate messages based upon importance. I may eventually have a program to access server log statistics to automatically prioritize messages based upon readership. For now, I will use my own judgment. For example, I think the survey should stay for now. However, the messages for the Men's Long Hair E-mail list no longer are necessary (except for the monthly update, which I left).
If you have any feedback, please let me know.
I have added a new feature to the board. You can now get a summary of all messages sorted by date. If you are a frequent visitor to the site, this will probably help you more quickly find new messages. Messages are not displayed within their threads. Instead they are simply displayed in the order they were created. Please give me feedback on this new feature.

Do ladies still find long hair attractive for men?
Last night, Lisahair's website was still up as usual. Today, I checked it to see if it had been updated, and I got one of Geocities' generic gray pages announcing that "ethan-ken has not yet moved in." Who the hell is "ethan-ken?" I know Lisa was going to be inactive for a few weeks, but why would Geocities give her spot to someone else? Unless she voluntarily gave it up for some reason and someone new snatched it up -- all within the last 18 hours or so! Anyone heard anything?
I WISH I had the guts to have long hair. I have seretly wished that I had waist length hair since I was about 3. (I'm 27 now) If I did it, I would get fired from a good job and probably get kicked out of my family. YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY. I AM JEALOUS.
Thanks for setting up this site. It's overdue. My hair is only recently long--I am a middle-aged professional, and have been growing out my hair for about two years. Right now its mid-shoulder-blade length, and often wear it in a ponytail with a sterling silver "ponyring" (I found the ponyrings on the web--just search "ponyring").

Hi there,
I thought this may be the best place to ask this. I am 21 and have been growing my hair long now since the spring of 96. It's now down to my shoulders. My "hair shop woman that cuts my hair" told me that I had dry hair. she asked what kind of shampoo I was useing and told her "pert plus". She advised me to stop useing it ASAP and goto pantine. So I took her advice and have been useing pantine for dry and damaged hair and also got the pantine conditioner fro dry and damaged hair. it's been about 5 months since I have started and have seen alittle bit of improvement in my hair. I have oily hair and have to wash it everyday. I was wondering....how much condidtioner do I use ? Usually I'll just put a little dab in my palm and spread it on the top the re-wet my hair to make it spread. Am I doing it right ? I have never had to use condiditoner before.
Another question I have, when I went into my hair place 5 months ago...I had the "dead ends" cut out. I have always gotten my hair feathered on top and layered in the back. Is this the right way to go to get the awsome mid-back length hair? I am pretty sure I want it the same length all the way around. I haven't had anyone to "coach" me through growing my hair long...but felt that y'all on this board could help me out.

I have shorter hair, but I like to go out some times in public with long hair - so I wear a really nice, expensive wig that is straight cut to my waist with bangs. I really like the feel of the long hair, done up nice - its worth the stares I get.
My favorite look is to pull the side up to a braided bun at the top of the back of my head and hold it with "chopsticks". When I am out like this I also wear a pair of larger silver or gold hoop earrings. I up dress sharp in a denim shirt, slacks and loafers.
Anyone else have the same "hobby"?

Hoping not to offend those of you who may be into roller sets, but I'd
be interested in hearing from guys who like their hair long and straight, or in various types of plaits (braids).
In the past my hair was just past my shoulders, then I cut it for a
job, something that I regret. I am now letting my hair grow long again. At the moment it is just to my shoulders, and I can't wait until it is much, much longer.
One of my favourite things about having long hair was the way it felt on my bare shoulders. I also loved to wear it in lots of thin braids.
I'd like to hear what other guys like best about having long hair, and what are their favourite ways to wear it. Also, a little history about your long hair might be fun, (i.e. how old were you when you first started wearing long hair, discrimination, or opportunities involving your long hair, different styles worn, etc.)

I've noticed that it's not that unusual for guys and girls to have long hair in similar styles. But most of the time, girls hair always look much "nicer"- smoother, more under control, shinier. Does setting hair help make it look better that way? If I wanted to try setting my hair, where could I find out about how to do it? I think girls learn aout this growing up, but it's harder for guys. Right now my hair is all one length, down to the top of my shirt collar. I like to push it back behind my ears. I style it using a large round brush and a blow dryer, which makes the hair straight, except that it curls under a little at the ends. It looks great right after I style it, but even by the next day it's much worse looking.

As a mother of two in her mid-thirties, I still love guys with long hair! It seems that very few men past 30 wear their hair long these days, which is a shame. I realize it's largely because of the pressure society puts on men to "look proper." Actually, people are sometimes even critical of my two boys hair-length (I purposely keep their hair longer than the typical hairstyle of boys in school). My boys love their hair with some length to it, even though they both have stubborn waves that stick out at times. Anyway, for those guys who have long hair, I applaud your good taste.
On today's morning show on KLBJ 590 AM here in Austin, Chuck Meyers is discussing Zacharia Towngate, who, as a second grader, wore a rat-tail and was told by the school that he had to cut it off. He decided to fight it, and has won in court several times. The city of Bastrop continues to appeal, stating they have the right to determine a dress code.

My hair is about three inches below my shoulders and is very thick..
It is now longer than it has ever been.. I have noticed that after a nights sleep, it is tangled and full of knots that are hard to remove when it is dry.. I wash it evey morning with 'Infusium' shampoo and use their leave-in conditioner.. This helps the knots when I comb it out.. When it is dry again, it looks great although I have to keep brushing it..
You guys who are veterans of long hair: What is best to keep my hair looking good?? I plan to grow it much longer.. What products do you trust in?? Should I refrain from brushing too much??

Hey guys. I was hoping that some of you might have suggestions about what I should do to detangle my hair after it's been washed. I have very fine, thick hair. Having tried various detanglers and conditioners with varying success, I have settled on using a moisturizing conditioning shampoo and then a cream rinse. I comb my hair in the shower with the cream rinse still in it, making it easier to comb and reduces breakage. After toweling off, I apply a leave-in conditioner. Regardless of this procedure, it is still an arduous task combing my hair the first time around. Can any of you suggest a particular detangling product or conditioner to ease my combing/brushing routine? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help. P.S. Its getting quiet again.
Mine is an "age old" dilemma, and I hope it doesn't bore those of you with enough guts to have already broken the hair barrier. I REALLY want to grow my hair long enough for a ponytail, but I keep cutting it before it gets to that length because of pressure from others. You see, I am a physician. Anyway, my hair is extremely thick and coarse, so it always looks terrible when it gets to medium length (over the ears and touching the collar in back). Can someone suggest a style that can allow me to grow it without looking like I'm trying to get it to grow out? I probably need the name of the style, as I've noticed that most stylists are hell-bent on cutting my hair however THEY please regardless of how much description I give of what I want. Also, is there any product that can tame coarse hair, allowing it to hang in a relaxed fashion instead of being stiff, as it is naturally. My hair has natural wave, which tends to look pretty good in back when it gets long (except at the bottom, where it flips out uncontrollably). However, the wave really makes the front a problem..I don't know what to do with it, short of using barrettes (women are lucky they can acceptably do this). I think my hair would look good once I get it long. Suggestions, comments, empathy, etc. welcome.

from the back of the ears forward. I have just decided to let my hair
in front grow long to match the hair in back. (Then I might let it
all grow even longer! I think waistlength hair would be totally
cool.)
I know it's more practicle to cut one's bangs short so one's hair
doesn'e keep falling in one's face (I *MUCH* prefer to have my hair
loose and free to drape around and caress my shoulders, especially
when shirtless), but I also find the idea of having *all* my hair one length *very* appealing: long and natural.
Any comments?

It seems to be the case that probably all the men I see who have long
hair have their hair parted in the middle as opposed to on the side.
Is there any practicle reason for this or is is just a preference?
I have always had my hair parted on my left side. If you read my
last post, I said I am now letting my hair in front grow long to
match my hair in the back (all one length). Ought I to chand my part
to be in the middle?
How do you long-haired guys have your hair parted?

I've just got done reading alot of the posts and untill now I pretty much thought I was alone in my desires
I have long one length hair , about 8" below my shoulders. I have had my hair this long since I was about 17, I'm 25 now.
I had a girlfriend in college that used to love to set my hair after doing hers, and long after breaking up and going our own ways i've continued this.
I'm still single but date and my current lover likes to braid my hair in a french braid. It took a lot of courage to go out of the house like this the first time
but now I couldn't give a shit less about the stares.
My hopes are that someday both men and women could wear there hair in any style they want and be able to dress any way they want by being able to cross over the
gender lines.

A recent exchange of posts (see nos. /122.html and /123.html) has highlighted the differences in terminology of hair-related things between us in the UK and you folks across the Atlantic.
As popular language and folklore is one of my interests, I would be pleased to see contributions from anyone on what they call various things we do to, or put in/on our hair (men and women)
Here's a few to start us off - UK term given first.
Fringe = Bangs (why 'bangs' for heaven's sake??)
Hairgrips (small tight haircoloured metal clips) = Bobby-pins (?)
Hair pins (as above but more open 'U' shape, generally used for holding buns in place) = ?
Hair slide (like hair grips, but larger and decorative) = barettes (?)
Plait (pronounced 'platt') = braid (we use this sometimes)
Elastic (thin cotton-covered rubber band to tie back hair) = ?
Scrunchie (as above but thicker and elaborately covered with decorative material) = ?
What do you call a decorative clip version of a scrunchie?
Curlers = rollers (we use this too)
Bunches (two short ponytails on each side of the head - little girlish) = ?
Pigtails (like bunches but two plaits) = ?
Any more ?

After all the accolades of people saying how happy they were to see this site established, there is sure a dearth of activity here! Where IS everybody? Are we all so busy in our lives that we can't contribute a little?
To re-establish why I'M here -- I'm a fan of roller sets on males with long hair, especially when that set results in a traditionally "female" hairstyle. I love to see photos of guys in rollers, and their "do's," and if you have such material, I encourage you to share it with us somewhere -- on the adjunct Long-Hair site, or on LisaHair's HP if you are more TG or CD inclined. Come out of the woodwork (or the closet!) and let's get some threads going here!

There seems to be a slight misinterpretation of the purpose of this site. This message board is not intended to be exclusively for REALLY long hair. It is for ANY long hair on men. If you would like to discuss long hair on men that is relatively short but still longer than the standard, feel free. Include images with your posts if you can.
Today I was walking around on 6th Street in Austin with my friend John. In front of us was a woman with hair going just past her butt. I commented to John how nice her hair was. He and I ended up passing her and the lady she was with just because we were walking faster. After we passed them, she started commenting about how nice my long hair was (butt-length). When John heard this, he turned around and mentioned that I had just commented about her hair. We all stopped and chatted for a while and generally had a good time about it.

The problem is that I only visit the board at 1 - 2 weeks interval, so that it may take a long time until I see your messages. Moreover many subscription requests lack the e-mail address of the subscriber.

Anybody got some good ideas for preventing long hair to break and/or splitting?
Here are my current ideas for site maintenance:
I have a general standard of 64K as a maximum page size. I will try to maintain this site at 64K by removing old messages.
As long as space allows, I will keep old messages in an archive to be linked from the main page.
I am considering expanding my board to include multiple boards arranged by topic. Any input/suggestion is encouraged.
Spam or offensive messages will be deleted by request if I deem them to be inappropriate to the topic or to the general population. This is intended to be a G rated site.
You may address any suggestions to me via e-mail or post them here (preferred, so that others may comment).
I guess I fall somewhere in between this really long-hair site and the really short haircut sites I've found.. Anybody else out there with any sites for us "medium" guys?

I hope this site is very successful. I've been growing my hair, but feel I'll have to cut it soon. It's currently all one length to my chin. But due to my profession (teacher), I'm thinking about cutting it before it grows any longer.

My hair probably isn't long, it's just to the bottom of my ears, but it looks way better than it did shorter.
Just this month I've found a stylist, and she's shown some ways to style it so it looks good. Its a big improvement using gel and a hair dryer. (I guess you can see I'm a novice.)
She's also made my hair quite blonde with a weave, and I really like it this way.
