I recently have undertaken to grow my hair out and have kind of started to obsess about my hair. I analyze my hairline daily and I'm sure I am beginning to see some slight recession and thinning on the left side of my hairline. I HATE IT! Sometimes I just want to give up and shave my head, having the attitude that if I don't have 100% full hair then I might as well not have any. I am 28 now and don't know if/when this recession will stop. The other bizarre thing is that, as I mentioned, it is only on the left side of my head. The right side of my hairline remains the same and I have pictures from when I was 24 to proove it.
Does anyone else sometimes feel this way - wanting so much to have a low hairline and thick hair everywhere that if they can't have it they are tempted to give up growing it long and just cut it off?
If all men could just have hairlines like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise!!
Any encouragement/comments would be welcome......
I dunno... a receding hairline can be sexy on some guys. Usually, it's the guys with the receding hairlines are the ones who don't think so, though. But that's like gray hair being "sophisticated"... it's always someone with dark hair who seems to have that opinion!
It boils down to this, really - we're our own worst critics. Don't obsess over your hairline, man. Just let it grow and enjoy it!
I would not get concerned, if I were you. My father had a receeding hairline (that was considered 'distinguished' by others), but my brothers and I were paranoid that we would lose our hair also. Between the ages of 27-32, each of us went through a 'thinning phase,' that lasted for about six to eight months and then stopped. Mine is the least noticeable, as I only got a slightly 'taller' forehead. I imagine that it might be the same thing for you.
A close friend of mine who had very long hair for a number of years cut if off three years ago. I kept encouraging him to grow it out again, and he has done so for the past year. It looks great. We both noticed, however, that his hair has obviously thinned out, and only on the left side. It was not obvious when his hair was short, but now that it is long, the left side falls differently from before. He isn't worried about it, and I don't think that you should be either.
I think that the fear of losing one's hair is always big, and I appreciate your concern. Don't do anything rash. If you are looking closely at your hairline every day, you are bound to overreact to what you see. Take some pictures, and then do so again six months from now, and compare. That will give you a much better idea of how much hair loss is taking place rather than studying the mirror every day.
The other thing is enjoy your hair, and make the most of it.

Hey, you're a man, and quite a few men have a little thinning going on here and there. One thing about when this happens is that no one will "think you're a girl" - long hair with a little thinning is a very masculine look.
As for cutting it all off because you've lost a little, my comment is: When they pulled my wisdom teeth out, I didn't just say, aw shucks, now I don't have a full set, so yank 'em all out!
Oh, and if some other man makes any unwanted comments, just look at him good and hard, then grin, and say, "I've got more hair than you!"
No arguments here... except with the quoted comment. The best response to unwanted comments is none at all. If people insist on making disparaging remarks about another's appearance they insult themselves. Better not to lower yourself to playing the game and show that someone has pushed a button.
Are you parting your hair on the left side, or did you in the past? Maybe it's been pulled out more.
My hair looks thinner to me on the left side than the right. It's also, for some reason, slightly curlier on that side, and therefore tangles and catches more easily when I comb it. I need to be more careful combing that side.
The hair on top of my head started to be visibly thinner about a year ago, and it bothered me a lot off and on. I had thoughts similar to yours - did I really want to keep it long if it became too thin? (I don't think I'd mind so much if it were receding, but this is more a scarcity of hair all across the top.)
Fortunately, it seems to have stopped getting any thinner... but I've also been making a note of men whose hair has thinned on top and who still look good. In fact, I saw an ad for a long-haired musician with a receding hairline months ago, and his hair still looked great. (I wish I remembered his name - I think it was a Celtic performer.)
The bottom line is - worrying about the thinning won't help any. Try changing your part, if you've got one (or you could try parting on the right if you want to hide the left side). Be careful combing, especially if your hair is wavy or curly. Otherwise, wait and see what happens, and don't get any hasty haircuts.
Everyone's hair is different - I have a long-haired friend ten years older than I whose hair is so thick you can barely see his scalp. I wouldn't mind having that much hair, but there's nothing I can do about it. (It's occurred to me, too, that if my hair hadn't thinned out on top, it might be too full. I don't really want to look like I'm wearing a beehive. :)
Well simply put I am 26 and the same thing is happening to me
my hair is starting to recede on the left side and I do have a tendency to obsess over it sometimes and glance at it every time I
pass a freakin mirror I have pictures when I was 23 and I can see
a difference Im sure.My hair is 3 inches below my ears in a bob style
and It pisses me off to think someday soon it will go away and I mean
I take damn good care of it I shampoo conditioner trim regularly
and its almost coming to a point where Im embarrassed to get a hair cut. When It first started happening I thought it was my fault or something I thought I was stressin or drinkin to much so I stopped all my bad habits started taking vitamins and exercised like crazy
It didnt do much maybe slow it down a bit so I guess Im stuck with
what genes I have and it made me a little more aware of my health.
I do plan on taking Propecia in the near future because there is a good chance I could stop it and I think to myself if 8 to 10 years
from now if I can maintain what I have , I could live with that. But your right
I saw Magnolia with Tom Cruise and what nice thick hair its not fair.
and I look at other peoples hairlines and think to my self I hope that
never happens to me.Its scary man.So Im gonna fight it long as I can
because the earlier you start the more you can try to keep so I hear
check out www.regrowth.com its given me some cool info. And even if its slightly receded as long as you condition and comb it nicely you should look ok.
