Here it is, I have got a dilemna.
I am growing my hair, and of course, would like to keep my hair as healthy as possible. Now, the thing is, I have heard that using a hair dryer is bad for the hair. first of all, is this true? Second of all, is gowing out side with slightly wet hair bad for it. Because it doesn't take a genious to figure out that water freezes below 0 degrees celcius. and this, is quite common for all those who live in Canada and the Northern states etc. I am just assuming that it is. Because when I wake up, shower, I don't have enough time to let it air dry (of course I dry it off as much as possible with a towel) I don't exactly want o go outside with it wet. so, I am just wondering if the only possibility is waking up earlier, which isn't sounding good either.
if somebody could please fill me in here that would be great.
thanks
alex
I don't see much of a problem using a hairdryer as long as you don't
overdo it. As long as you leave your hair slightly damp, I don't see
how a hairdryer can damage your hair.
I'm not sure, but I think so, but as long as you wear a hat or don't
stay outside for long, that's ok. That's just my guess, though.
Blow drying isn't the best idea for your hair, but if you must, leave it just a bit damp. I usually shower in the afternoon after work & workout, so I can allow my hair to air-dry.
Well, especially in truly frigid climates your hair can actually freeze if you go out with it too wet and might even break off if frozen solid. Its the heat from hair dryers that really kills your hair so if you have to use one just try to keep it on a very cool setting and move it around a lot, don't torture one spot too long. Some peoples hair handles forced drying better than others. My cuticles can't take it at all, they get all roughed up and my hair will actually feel kind of sticky and strawlike. This can happen even if I go out into a strong wind before its completely dry, it just doesn't feel right until the cuticles are smoothed down again. You have to experiment and see how your hair responds since everyone is a bit different. Try showering and washing your hair before bed. You'll still feel cleaned up for the morning and your hair will already be dry. It works for my family.
Good luck!

Infusium 23 Leave-In Conditioner is a real "miracle in a bottle." I've used it since 1983. It really helps to protect your hair before blow-drying.
John Freida's "Secret Weapon" is great for using after blow-drying, too.
Dawn,
Are you the one with the long haired kids? If so, how is their hair doing? Still getting long? How about your own hair?
Tom
Hi Tom,
Thanks for asking, and funny that you should do so now. I've been meaning to share these pics for about a week now and this seems like an opportune time, so check out the new post I put up on top!
Take care and keep growing!
Dawn
Dawn,
Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. You did not have to share them with me to realize you were telling the truth. The boys hair looks great. I am very impressed. How long have you been growing their hair? How long do they plan to grow their hair, or have you not talked about it? How long would you like to see them grow their hair? I have a friend who's husband has below the waist length hair. She loves his hair. How is your own hair doing? Getting longer? Thanks again,
Tom
Thanks Tom, I figured a few people would enjoy seeing such hair on little kids. (They're 10, 9 and 7 BTW.) I used to trim it when they were littler, bangs and a kind of long Sir Lancelot thing but they asked me to stop and finally gave up the bangs too when they realized it was much easier without them. We have talked about how long they'll go with it and they don't really know when they want to stop, they just tell me its not yet! Actually they were enthralled with a picture Victor put up not long ago of a guy (Floyd I think) with a glorious head of fire red hair and a wonderful full beard to match. They saw that one and said, thats it mom, thats our goal. Of course the hair will probably get there well before the beards but thats what they say they want! As for me, I just want them to be happy, feel like whole people and determine for themselves what feels good so I'll just follow their lead as to when enough is enough. Actually we have the discussion quite often that just because their dad and I have really long hair, they aren't obligated to follow suit and I will love them no matter what they choose but they assure me this is what feels right for them, so the hair just keeps growing. Oh, and I meant to tell you Tom, thats my hair in the very last picture, approaching five feet now, still creeping towards the floor albeit slow as glacial ice. I have very, very fine hair and its taken about 23 years to get to this length but I have no plans to ever part with it.
Best wishes and happy growing to everyone!

Dawn,
Thanks for the information and your posts about your sons. It sounds like you have well adjusted children. That is great. I am also a lover of extremely long hair. Would it help for me to grow my hair long to find someone with long hair? I have always had short hair, but it grows very very fast (my stylist cuts off about 3/4 inch every 5 to 6 weeks) and is very thick. I have been frustrated over the years of not being able to find someone with long hair.
I am glad you will let the boys grow it as long as they want. I am totally with you and I would love to meet your family sometime. Anyway, thanks,
Tom
You know Tom, that is a very interesting question and a couple of years ago if you'd asked if I thought being a longhair would help your chances of finding a gal who is a longhair herself I would have said definately yes, since that is my own personal preference and it was hard for me to imagine that gals with extra long hair wouldn't also appreciate their men that way. But since I've been "involved" with long hair sites I've come to realize that many and perhaps even most women with very long hair do not have my same political/spiritual/philosophical reasons for being that way. Its more of a fashion/accessory/male magnet thing for them and many don't even want their partners to have long hair. I was very surprised by this. But from my own personal viewpoint I would still say that as a longhair, I would be MUCH more initially attracted to a man who also shared that trait. Gee, that wasn't too ambiguous was it?!
Good luck though! For me, love suddenly appeared right after I decided to quit searching for it!! (And I just celebrated my twentieth anniversary!)
Keep the faith!

Dawn,
Thanks. I will keep that in mind. I haven't decided to grow my hair long yet, but may do it. When I have kids, I plan to let both the boys and girls grow their hair if they want. I consider you and your family an inspiration to families everywhere to do what they want. I hope your boys grow their hair indefinitely. By the way, do you have any daughters and do they have long hair? What is your ultimate length of hair for yourself? Thanks,
Tom
Being from the South, where 40 is considered very cold, I have no idea about your temperature concerns. However, as far as blow-drying goes, I think the danger is highly over-rated so long as you don't go overboard. Use minimal shampoo, lots of conditioner, and only detangle your hair when it's dry, and you can avoid most damage. I basically have to blow my hair dry- if I let it air dry, it becomes very tangled... I'd have dreds in a week or two if I let it air-dry every day. Just try to blow the hair dry from top to bottom (in the direction of the hair cuticles), don't dry it quite all the way, and keep the dryer moving around instead of staying in one place.

I see from your e-mail address that you go to Carleton University, so you likely live in the Ottawa area. I am from Ontario myself, and currently live in Minnesota (where it is almost as cold as Winnipeg --- colder than Ontario but much less snow) and my hair does not seem to get damaged from freezing. It freezes pretty much daily (it is hardly ever above freezing here in the winter, especially in the morning) and is still healthy and fine. I never use a hair dryer.
