I think one of these talk shows would go for a group of
long hair men getting a professional makeover which wouldn't
be cutting the hair, but styling the hair into a variety of
masculine styles. Also discussing the subject of long hair
on men. What else could be on the show? What kind of sytles
would do the subject justice?
I'm right with you, CHuck!

You are 100% correct... the reason they can equate a serious haircut with 'improvement' is that it reflects our cultural bias. Getting angry & outraged can only reinforce that bias. I look at it this way: by shearing the kids hair to a crewcut against his will (AND on national TV) will almost certainly make him want to grow it out even longer. Imposing ones own values on another will strengthen the tendency to rebel against those values... this I can say from experience. Anytime I get a disparaging remark about my hair I think, "I'm growing it out an extra couple inches just for you".
Amazingly, if these guys didn't want their haircut, they probably wouldn't go on the show. It's not like they don't know what's going to happen. They could always say "No, I'm not going to go on your show to get my haircut."
