As far as split ends go, what will happen if I don't trim them off?
I just got a trim a couple days ago, then someone said they saw my hair was splitting. I was horrified!
I'm not about to get another trim just after I had one two days ago! What's the deal with split ends? Will they make my hair look like crap if I don't trim em for awhile?
Growin out hair is so difficult :)
lol
I think "split ends" are just an excuse for a "trim"...there are many good hair products out there that can take care of this "problem"...I'm not sure what your friend saw when they said your hair was "splitting"....sometimes dry or unconditioned hair gives that appearance...hey, stay away from those "trims"...use a good regimen of hair care and you'll look great...
Split ends on your hair are just that -- split ends. Think of it as your hair "unraveling" like a loose thread might. Split ends will create tangles in the ends of your hair, and may make it "poof" in an unsightly way. If the split ends are not trimmed off, they may split further up much faster than an undamaged hair strand might, just as a thread that has started unravelling will likely catch and unravel more. Hair products and conditioners can smooth down the ends and hide the splits to make it slicker and more manageable, but they can't really "heal" them.
I don't think another trim is necessary if you just got a competent one. Professional hair caretakers recommend a trim of 1/8 - 1/4 inch every 6-8 weeks, but my personal method is to simply wait until I notice unnatural tangles forming and then get a trim. For my hair (long, somewhat thin, and blonde), this ends up being about a 1/2 - 1 inch trim about 3 times a year. It still has noticeable growth, and I constantly get compliments on how healthy it is.
As far as what causes splits, some of it is just natural reaction to the elements. Certain hair products can strengthen hair to delay this, but anything that causes excess stretching or breaking (brushing wet hair, wearing tight hair rubberbands, many hair dyes) will decrease its natural health. Certain hair types (I've noticed Asian hair in particular) are thick enough that split ends are very rare. But en general, just keeping it washed, (optionally) conditioned, brushed, trimmed occasionally and worn gently should be all you need for great hair.
As far a trimming is concerned, doing it every 2-3 months seems reasonable- My hairdresser recommends doing it once a month. However, I don't follow her advise on that as she is a kind of girl who loves men with short hair. And i'm not getting fooled in that one. She just wants me to keep trimmming my hair so it will delay its growth. But anyway, I like her as she knows her job anf i'm happy with her service. The main advice is ,Yes, trim it, but do it with moderation-
It will eventually make your hair grow faster.
There is no easter bunny, Santa, or tooth fairy, and trimming your hair WILL NOT make it grow fatser.
Trimming your hair to make it grow fatser makes about as much sense as masterbating to loose weight. Actually, it makes less sense; sperm must weigh something right?

Scott,
Don't take anyone else's word for your so called 'split ends.'
Get the best magnifying glass you can and take a look at the ends yourself. Then make your own decision based on what YOU find.
I keep getting told I have split ends, but when I put them under a magnifying glass the ends are just fine....and no folks, they aren't split all the way up.
Trust your own eyes Scott.
I really think split ends are terrible to have and get them trimmed right away..they prevent your hair from growing and looking healthy
