Ok, stupid question time:
I keep reading that I should NOT brush my hair when wet, but to
wait until it is dry because wet hair is more fragile. Ok, how
much more fragile? My hair brushes out MUCH easier when it is
wet, and I don't seem to get any more hair in my brush when it is
wet as opposed to when I re-brush dry.
FWIW, I brush from the root down until I meet resistance, then
pull out of the hair until minimal resistance (fewest tangled
hairs) is felt, then repeat until I've worked through the entire
mass.
My hair is at mid shoulder-blade length (where I'm keeping it).

Wet hair tends to stretch when you brush it wet, so that over time it becomes very brittle. It is much healthier to _comb_ it when wet.
It's better for your hair to start brushing (or combing) near the ends to work out the potential tangles, until it's smooth. Then begin the brush stroke up higher until the next section is smooth, then go from root down to tip. You'll get less breakage this way.
If you are happy with your hair as it is, then I guess you could keep doing what you're doing. But keep in mind that you might be causing some damage.

That's true. Try using a WIDE TOOTH comb when your hair is wet instead... and use plenty of conditioner on the ends to help ease out any tagles.
