I'm in flux, I can't decide if I want to just cut it all off, or keep letting it grow. As you can see, I look ridiculous. I don't want to go mullet, but these bangs are like wet curtains, long enough to tickle my nostrils but too short to tie back. Please, any ideas?
Hmmm... I don't know about that. My first thought was, "My god, what incredible, thick, wavy hair!" I'd love to have hair like that!
Can you keep them off your forehead by combing your hair straight back (when it's wet) or using a side part, perhaps with the assistance of some styling gel?
Another thought, weather permitting: Hats!
Really, don't let hair like that go to waste! (To your waist, on the other hand... :)
Your hair looks a lot like mine. I never let it fall forward, but rather used gel and combed it back when it was wet. Now I have that "Wall Street with ponytail" look going, but the top is almost all grown out. Now when I get the sides into a ponytail holder, I can throw the gel away and be free. Good luck.
I agree - slick it back until the fringe grows out.
P.S You are the absolute spitting image of a British actor called Christian Ealey - he even has your hairstyle!
Unfortunately, just about everybody who decides to grow short hair out goes through this stage and has this same problem. I went through this 12 years ago, and I have watched msot of my guy friends go through it once they reach college. It's best to not cut them, because if you can make it past this stage, you'll have beautiful long hair all around that you can pull back.
Here are some suggestions for getting through this without ripping your hair back. Admittedly, there are more options if you are not afraid of looking feminine, but I've seen both sexes try all of these, so it's up to you.
1) Wear a headband. You can get some that are wire, with small teeth poking out in the back so it holds in a little better than the old plastic ones. A cloth band won't hold quite as well, but it may look less feminine. On a related note...
2) Wear a bandana. You can fold it up and tie it in back and wear it as a headband, or you can just fold it in a big triangle and let it cover most of your hair. (like they taught us to do in scouts, to keep our hair from falling in the fire)
3) Wear barrettes. Part your hair (side or middle), brush back the sides, and barrette the hair in. Looks pretty feminine.
4) Gel it up! When you get out of the shower, spread some gel on the wet hair, comb in back, and see if it holds. (i'm not an expert on hair stuff)
5) Do nothing and just deal with it. You'll be teased about needing a haircut, it'll get in your eyes, but if you are patient, in a while you should be able to do something worthwhile. If you are desperate, you may be able to get an experienced hairdresser to style your bangs (NOT cut very much!) so they stay long but don't look shaggy. Beware, though, since this becomes a path to a mullet for some.
Good luck!

I did a lot of looking and found at Walmart a headband that I like.
It is plastic and only about 1/4 inch wide and can be rather inconspicuous.
It is made by Goody; the package is labeled Intrigue
and has a product number of 22633.
It comes in a package of four assorted colors, some dark.
I usually use the black one. It does not look feminine.
I remember that phase well. The first time I grew my hair I was in college, and wore a hat every day. The most recent time I wore KMS paste in it to control it.
When you can finally tie it back you will be sooo happy you did not cut it. You will have cool hair, and the choice to tie it, or let it fly will be all yours!
Stay the course.

You're almost there. Push on through! You can do it!
You didn't get to be tall by cutting off parts of your growing body...
'Gee, what should I do, my dick's getting too big, should I trim it?'
Let your hair grow, it will get to where you want it and once you're there you'll never want to cut it.
Same as growing a beard, ya gots ta go through some awkward times.
This is a great time to work on your patience and your persistence.
Let your whole body grow....
You have the freedom to be your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way!
get a hat that you like and wear it for the next year or 2. it sounds like you really don't want it cut. visualize the length you want it to reach and think if you don't cut this will be the only time you have to endure this b.s. good luck.
No, you look great, not ridiculous. Those bangs look cool. As the other posts indicated, if you want it long, it will take a phase of hat-wearing and gel. If you don't want to do that, I'd leave it as-is, or let the bangs grow another inch or two. The look is great with your hair type. I am real jealous, and wish I had hair like yours.
hey man, doesn't look that bad to me, I find it helps if you really know what you want. Cause if you don't, then going through stages that you don't like (personally), is harder. If you think you need something, i would suggest finding a really good hair dresser and ask for suggestions and help on making the process easier. I don't think that growing out hair HAS to be painful. I mean, if you follow some movie stars through out some time, you'll notice their getting longer and longer, and they don't look bad to me. so if that helps, great, it it doesn't well, sorry.
Alex
ps. I am not sure if I would keep your back proportionally that long compared to everything else(sides and bangs). But that is just me
Pete, I would be very careful with hairdressers.
When I was at your stage 1 year ago I went to a ponytailed one to trim split ends and make my mop look neater.
The result was he cut off 8 cms on top and I ended up with some sort of Mullet I really didn't want.
Your hair looks good as it is and shows the free spirit of having long hair.
Think careful before cutting it. The 2-week rule is worth applying.
All the best.

just saying your point is a very good point. But so was mine, find a good hairdresser, one that doesn't do what you don't want them to do. I also find, if you aren't specific to the exact detail, they are going to use their own judgement, and that, may or may not be what you want. just had to clarify myself. But yes, do be careful.
best of luck my friend
Alex
You can part your hair and add some mouse or gel if your hair still keeps on getting into your eyes. And if you don't want a mullet, you should trim your back so it's more even with your sides.
I agree with the majority here keep going trim the back a couple inches maybe and see what happens.Possibly slick it back or part to the side or middle with gel if neccesary alcohol free of course
and eventually youll be able to tuck it behind ears and then PONYTAIL TIME:-) and the option to let it hang will always be yours because you didnt make the "cut it"
mistake oh yeah us a good conditioner too healthy hair always looks
better
good luck

Depends ... how long do you want your hair to ultimately be?
The awkward phase is inevitable. For the time being you could try gooping it up and combing it straight back until your bangs are at least long enough to push behind your ears.
I would say lose the back...you already have a mullet thing happening. Be patient and let the front grow. Buy a hat,gel or whatever to get you through the hateful stage.
Definately, let you last haircut be getting rid of 4-5 inches in the back.
Godd luck!
