I have been growing my hair out for about six months now. It was last trimmed in February and is now all the same lenth, but it is only just covering my ears. I want to get it to my sholders, but I am starting to get alot of comments at the office about needing a haircut. It does get in my face and does not look very professional sometimes.
Is there any way I can get it to grow faster? If it were longer I could put it in a pony tail and it would look more together. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?
Trust me you will get comments on needing a haircut no matter what if your hair gets more than a couple of inches long. I work in an office and I have a bob to just below my ears with bangs. I really love the style and I think that it looks really good. My stylist said that this was the best style for my features (after I told her to not base the recommendation on gender). I haven't had any bad comments from co-workers but I can tell that they feel that I should get a haircut. But it is my hair and I love it. They don't have to wear it. Youjust have to be strong.
Try a little gel (get something natural with NO alcohol) to help keep you're hair out of your eyes. --I know this may be taboo to some one here, but it really helped me--
Eventually, you'll be able to put your bangs behind your ears and keep them out of your way. Then the ponytail is just a few inches away!
As far as peoples' comments, just roll with the punches ... I usually make a joke out of it. What part of the country do you live in? That sure can seem to make a difference. The style seems to be changing again, so it may make it easier. Just hang in there and remember the two-week rule!

What is the two week rule?
What is the two week rule?
I perfectly understand your concerns as I had to pass through that stage not so long ago.
Once the phase before the pony tail is reach, things started to settle down. I still have some comments some time but far less than I use to have.
Now my pony tail has reach a nice 12 inches long thanks to the vitamins supplient that I am taking regularely
(NutriCap). My hairs are growing now at an average rate of one inche per month and I'm so proud of it.
Don't discourage yourself and let people get use to your new look. Most people react because of the change and soon forget about it.
We are in the year 2000 after all and look around, there are plenty of men with long hairs (Thank God).
This is OUR life after all.
Good luck
Jean
I know this isn't a popular idea, and it's not really what you asked for, but it is possible to have it trimmed to look neater during the "bad" phase.
I had mine trimmed periodically for a year or more, and the stylist did a very nice job of keeping it looking neat without taking too much off. I never got any comments, and I felt I looked like I had longish hair on purpose, not just like I needed a haircut and hadn't gotten around to it.
You *do* need to know a good stylist to do that, and of course, you *will* lose some growing time. It worked for me because I felt my hair looked pretty neat the entire time, and I was never tempted to get it all cut off (which happened years ago when I tried just letting it grow "unsupervised").
I only mention as a possibility for someone who, like me, works in an office where "appropriate" appearance is required, but who still wants to grow long hair.
Thanks for the suggestion of using the trim cycle. It sounds like a good way to keep my office appearance in check while still working toward the goal of atleast shoulder lenth.
It may take longer, but I guess it will be worth it. Who knows, with this approch I may let it grow down to my waist or more!
Hi Rob,
I've been letting my hair grow since May '99, from a mild mullet. It is now long enough to tie most of it back in a pony tail, with hair spray to tame the remaining "danglers", and I have started wearing it this way at work. I think it looks great. My three partners have different opinions!
During the growing-out phase, the comments started out half-jokingly, but when they realized I really WASN'T going to get it cut, they stopped commenting all together. It was like, "He's actually serious about this!" Since they weren't commenting, I assumed everything was okay. WRONG!!
The day before I started wearing it in a ponytail, one of them comes into my office and says, "We need to talk." He went on to tell me how embarrassed they are of me, and "can't imagine what our customers must think." I was completely taken aback by this, and could only sputter out a few lame protests. But I should point out that NONE of the customers that I deal with has expressed even the slightest negativaty about my hair, and they keep calling me with orders. So, who's got the problem? Hmmm?
What a relief it is to finally be able to tie it back at work! It seems like I have an extra 2 hours of available time each day, for not having to fuss with it! This is great!
So now I've got one partner who doesn't seem to care about my hair at all, one who won't speak to me unless it's directly related to work, and one who won't speak to me at all. I'm obviously in violation of some backwater/hillbilly/clodhopper appearance code, and there's no way this side of a drastic haircut that I'll get back in the "club". Something I'm NOT ABOUT to do!!
I'll say one thing, I'm definitely seeing these partners that I've known for fifteen years, with NEW EYES! Such small-minded provincialism!
Sorry to be spouting off, Rob. But if I can do this, you can too! Hang in there! You may need to grow a thicker skin along with the longer hair, but it's worth it!
Zeke
Oh BTW, as far as faster growth, I've been taking the Hair Formula 37 for about three months, but it's really too soon to tell for sure if it's helping. I figure it can't hurt! The hair directly in front seems to grow super-slow, though it IS growing.
As long as you're not being threatened with the sack (although you say partners so maybe that's not an issue) then you are not the one with a problem. If your customers don't mind, you're sorted!
Smurf,
By way of an update, my three partners came into my office Monday and handed me a 3-page diatribe, basically asking for my resignation. The four of us own the corporate stock, and collectively they do have the votes to remove me from the company.
Although I could fight this, I have no desire to remain with such narrow-minded, backstabbing partners. I would much rather work where I am appreciated for my skills and talents, and not because I simply go along with some arbitrary appearance code, particularly when my customers seem to agree.
My attorney says that their action is "without substantial merit or pretext", and feels that I should be able to get a pretty good settlement.
Ultimately, I think they will regret having done this. On the other hand I DO NOT regret letting my hair grow!
Zeke
I agree with you Zeke.
We may think that people are OK with us when we are growing our hairs but often it is a facing. Most of the time those close minded people don't know what to do with us "long hairs wierdo".
The in between period isn't an easy one but once we can attache our hairs into a pony tail, things tend to go a little smooter.
When someone tell me that I do not look correct, I am looking at them and think that they don't look any better with their short hairs. This is a matter of personal choice after all.
Keep on Rob and simply arrange yourself to keep your hairs neet. I know it is not easy all the time to face those people that judge us but like Zeke said, build yourself a thick skin and it should be OK.
Well this is what I wish you.
Yours
Jean
