i've been growing my hair now for about two months. i want to grow it long, but the hair above my ears is now bugging the hell out of me. and overall, my hair looks very unkempt.
should i get a haircut? or is it best left alone? i'd rather look a little nicer while the hair grows, but obviously, a cut would increase the time for my hair to grow out.
any suggestions? experiences?
thanks
Congratulations and welcome to the bad hair phase. You can think of it as a rite of passage. You *could* cut your hair, but that would be counterproductive. If you want your hair to get long, you have to let it grow, and cutting it now will just postpone the bad hair phase. You might try slicking your hair back... get some strong gel, apply while your hair is wet, plaster it as close to your head as possible, and blowdry as usual, adding hairspray if needed. Sure, your hair will feel crispy, but at least it won't be in your face and ears. And if you can endure that for another year or so, then you'll have lots more options. Happy growing.

thanks a lot for the advice guys! i suppose i'm going to leave it alone.
btw, is there a name for the style that tom cruise has in mi2? i'd like something like that, but not so long in the front.
thanks

I've been growing my hair out for about 3 1/2 months, so I'm probably in the same spot as you are. I had my hair butchered at the beginning of March and I'm not letting one of those deaf stylists hacking at my hair however they like! Anyway, ss for the hair around the ears, try pushing as much behind the ears as possible. You may want to use gel for this (although I dont since I cant stand the stuff). And in little while you may want to get a friend or someone to shave the back of your neck (CAREFULLY, you dont want to remove your actually hair), and trim the bottom to even it out.
Good luck (I need some too)!

When a grew my hair, my stylist trimmed my hair every 5 weeks. Each time I went in, she cut just enough to prevent split-ends. She cut so little, that I questioned her many times if she was actually cutting anything!
My hair looked great throughout the whole growing process. If fact, my wife was jealous because she said I never went through a "bad hair phase". And it grew VERY fast. (My hair actually felt and looked longer after each trim).
Hint: Don't go to one of those cheap haircutting chains. You should be paying at least $20 for a cut (IMHO). Also, if the stylist does a good job, tip her well!
One more thing, if you go to a different stylist each time, you'll get what you deserve. Find one stylist and stay with her!!!
If one only goes a few times a year and uses a different stylist each time, how could you be sure of the results? Do people continually use a different doctor or dentist each time? Do kids have a different teacher each day? (you get my point...)
Good luck.
truly - this is the hardest part. growing long hair is so awkward ~ my best advice:? be patient. i would think that if you wore a bandana to cover the majority of the unevenness you would be ok.
stick with it, it is worth it in the long run (and chicks dig it)
