why is a bun a "girls" style.
Who says it *is*? I'm sure you've seen Japanese dressed in traditional samurai costume with their hair gathered at the back of their heads in what could only be called a classic bun? Although my usual style is a pony tail, I've worn my hair in a bun while working out at the Y, as well as some formal occasions. If for any reason you need to keep your hair off your neck or safely out of the way, the bun (IMO) is the most practial (and best looking) solution. I use a gadget called a "Whirl-a-bun" that I bought at a hair-accessory store that makes rolling a smooth bun easy -- even for a guy. I've received a few comments about it, but they were 100 percent positive. If the name "bun" bothers you, call it something macho, like a "closed fist" or a "boxing glove." Good luck.

I've worn a bun many times. I don't use any special gadget to make it tho. I twist my ponytail around into a kind of loose knot, and pin it in place with bobby pins. I learned to do it from one of the "Klutz" books, I think it was the one about braiding hair. It was also helpful (and fun) to watch girls quickly wind their hair into a bun.
The bun is a great hairstyle to minimize ground-hair contact when working under a vehicle.

You are right. Buns are fabulous, and they sure aren't just for girls. A few weeeks ago I posted asking for ideas for hairstyles for warm weather (other than ponytails). A couple of people suggested a bun. After much trepidation, during a heat wave when I was ready to chop it all off, I put it in a bun. To my surprise, I loved it, and most people who see me with it seem to like it as well. I usually wear a "conservative" bun, fairly low on the back of my head, but I have even tried it piled on top a couple of times! Leslie

the neck on a chick is sexy.. this is why the bun or even french twist (upsweep) is a "girls" style. some men can get away with it there is a certain anarchist present at the WTO in Seattle from Eugene that wears this or pigtails as his preferred style.
however, this is very difficult to pull off and Dale does not recommend this for guys. what i recommend? I would think a ponytail or a cap or try a bandana? that is what i prefer.
