I'm 20 yrs old and have had shoulder length long hair for about the past 4 yrs. I once heard that men that wear their hair long are more susceptible to going bald later in life, because supposedly it is unhealthy for the roots of the hair and the scalp . Is there any truth to this?
I think I can help...
the truth of the matter is that long hair will not make you go bald.
However, if you tend to wear a ball cap you will experience breakage around the crown and that tends to damage the hair.
i would recommend: not wearing any restrictive bands/ hats / maybe wear a bandana instead as it does not cause breakage at all.
hope this helps.

I've worn a ball cap at work for 9 years. I have no breakage around the crown (the hat is not tight enough on the head for this). In fact, wearing the hat has kept my hair alot healthier. My hair is almost all one length and down to the shoulder blades. Long hair or baseball caps do not make you bald, genetics do.
Steve,
This old fart is 55. I've got hair down to my ass in back and still have the baby hair on my temples....just lucky genetics like Mike says.
My maternal grandfather died well into his 80's with a full head of long white hair. My paternal grandfather was bald as a Q Ball in his twenties....
The worst things I ever had to deal with in my life never actually happened....stop worrying, enjoy!
I actually beleive the opposite is true. When you wear your hair short, the oils remain close to the scalp, clogging pores and contributing to hair loss. With long hair, oils are allowed to run down the shaft (especially when brushed regularly) and the scalp has less oil buildup.
