I'm 31 and have had long hair for as long as I can remember. Right now, my hair is only about chin length, but it was more than half way down my back until a few months ago. My buddies and I had been drinking a bit, and had caught a bizz...and then decided to take in a movie. It was a midnight show, and packed...we sat in front of a group of 8 or 9 guys who turned out to be loud and obnoxious. I was wearing my hair in a pony tail, as usual. The movie was loud and the audeince was really animated. When the movie ended and the lights came on, I started to put on my jacket, and instinctively went to flip my pony tail off my back...but it wasnt there. I frantically felt for it and broke out in a cold sweat...my buddies stared in wide-eyed disbelief. Someone had cut od my hair just below the rubber band that had held the pony tail in place. I thought I was going to vomit right there...When I contacted the police, they told me that there is a market for long hair, and that there actually Are "hair thieves". Has anyone else heard of this? I was so traumatized by this "theft" that I still shake when I think about it.
More likely it was hanging into his popcorn and he, being as drunk as you, ate it! (Darn stringy popcorn!).
Moral - keep those 'tails on your side of the seat.
It's possible that the theft of your hair was a sort of hate crime; I say this because I only date men with long hair and people have told me that this means I'm a closet case. The point is, losers may think long hair on a man is a threat to their own masculinity.
PS sorry about your hair.
You should be traumatized. You were disfigured. It was a criminal act and a serious affront. You have my sympathy and surely that of others on this board.
It may have been theft, but a serious thief would have not drawn attention to himself as these people did. The motive was more likely vandalism - youths trying to see what they can get away with to impress one another.
About a year ago a man posted on here reporting a similar thing happened to him on a city bus. The moral to the story is to watch your mane like you watch your wallet. If there are strangers behind you, put it down your shirt, put it under your coat, or let it down and pull it around your shoulders so it is in front.
A ponytail can be cut off with one stroke, while hair that's down takes more effort to remove it without your feeling it. But people may still mess with it. As I recall, the man on the bus had his hair down and the juveniles still managed to chop off about half of it. So keep your hair under your clothes or tight against your body so you will feel anything happening, or in front where you will see it. If the cretins sense they'll be detected, they are unlikely to attempt anything.
There are no nerves in hair to warn you, and even children and idiots know this - little boys dipped little girls' pigtails in inkwells for about a century (until ball-points did away with inkwells), so succumbing to the temptation to play with a ponytail dangling in your face is certainly nothing new. :-) One is wisest to not provide juveniles such opportunities.
Yes, I like to have the long hair myself, but as long as it is ON THE HEAD! Why do you suppose that I'm the HAPPY HIPPY HEAD HUNTER? ;-)
you have our deepest sympathies. i assume that you're growing it back out. heed well the advice given- i'll add: when selecting a seat in a movie theater or other public place take a moment to 'size up' the ppl seated around you... if you aren't comfortable with those behind you, find another seat. if there is no other- leave. perhaps most important-- limit how much you drink before going out so you have all your wits about you.
being traumatized by what has happened to you is understandable, but you must get past it. don't empower the oaf(s) who did this to you to screw up your life today. you can't change what has already happened. try to look at it as a new start & find a positive aspect to focus on... at least you're starting from chin length and not a buzz cut.
