I saw the movie, "The Patriot" this weekend and was amazed at how many men had long hair. I'd say 90% of the men wore it long. I wonder how historically accurate this was during the founding of this great nation.

Well, you can't get closer to its "founding" than the event depicted above. :-)
Arrows show those whose hair falls well over their collars, and some of them have ponytails. Quite a few of those that are not even marked have hair completely covering their ears. Signer "A" has hair falling well below his shoulders on both sides of his neck, and signer "B" has a long ponytail tied with a bow. All this is VERY evident with an actual bill under a magnifying glass.
Long hair rules!
"during the founding of this great nation"
great nation!!! ha!!!
Yes, it's still a great nation to live in because not only can we complain about how the government runs, but we can also change it.
Mike & all,
While I have no liking for Mel Gibson and while I have even less liking for the way this film has "created" history simply to serve its plot, I will give it credit for being extremely accurate in its details. Chief among these details, as far as we are concerned, is the hair. The Longhair.
That is the way most men DID wear their hair. It was a natural and simple thing to do. Shorthair on a man was the exception. Longhair was so much the norm in fact, that Longhaired wigs for men were considered a basic necessity for any gentlemen's wardrobe.
This is a point that has been brought up on this forum before but is worth saying here again. By today's standard of grooming, our Founding Fathers were a bunch of Longhaired Hippie Freaks. That these men were all highly educated, mostly upper-class, men of means who were bankers, printers, silversmiths, brewers, & shipbuilders by profession would not be apparent by today's standards. All that most would see today are a bunch of middle-aged guys with Longhair.
And so it goes...

PS - "great nation?" You betcha! There is no other place on this planet that offers as many freedoms as does this country. It has taken an enormous amount of work to get to this point, and even though this country is far from perfect, it is a helluva lot closer than anywhere else. That a bunch of Longhairs helped kickoff this process is pretty damned cool! - MP
And on the other side of the pond too.. We saw The Scarlet Pimpernel at the Kennedy Center over the weekend. Every man in it had long hair...
