Hey there
I'd like to grow my hair out like Scott Stapp from the band Creed. My hair is really short right now(George Clooney cut). Does anyone know how long it would take. And, is this possible for someone with thick, wavy hair?
Thank
Carlos
well, i am with you. .. i think scott stapp has one of the best heads of hair around. . .now, if yours is cut as short as george c, then it will take you close to 2 years to get what scott stapp has. . .but it will be well worth it when you get it. . .my hair is wavy, like yours, so mine will never look quite like mr. stapp's hair does. but that doesn't mean that you can't have something that looks equally as good.
good luck growing it out!
Hey MJToo
Thanks for the response. I have one more question though. To me it appears that Stapps hair is wavy. It certainly does not look straight in most pics I have seen. Also, I tried growing my hair out before and it just gets higher and higher(sort of like Elvis). What can I do while it's growing to make it at least normal looking? Thanks again.
Carlos
hey carlos!
yep, his hair is just a bit wavy, but nothing major. . .that little bit of wave is actually kinda nice.
and do i understand the whole "higher and higher" deal. . .mine did too until it got long enough to where the weight of it allowed it to lay down more. . .or course, i still use gels and mousse to keep it down, but until it gets long enough, you'll have to endear that bad phase. . .a good strong gel and mousse will have to do.

Hey Mjtoo:
Thanks for your response(again:) I'm back at ya with some more questions. When should I go for a trim? Also, when do I take the pic into the hairdresser to tell her this is what I want. Thanks in advance
Carlos, the Scott Stapp wanna be:)
Thought I'd jump in on this one.
Take the pic NOW and find a stylist that will listen to you and work with for the next couple years. Although cuts will be few and far between for the first couple years,(probably none for the first year since it's buzzed now), you'll be happy you did it. You're going to have to get used to the idea of spending more money on cuts and products if you're going to do this. Don't go to one of the strip mall $10 joints, they have too high of a turnover rate to find someone that will be around for a while, plus most people working at those places have just graduated from school and don't have much experience, especially with long hair.
Take your time finding a stylist, if your hair is really short now, you can afford to look around a bit. What I did when I started growing mine out was to go my wifes stylist and talk to her. My wife has had hair down to her mid back for years and it's always looked good. Most better salons will let you make an appointment just to talk with a stylist at no cost to you. If you know somebody with long hair,(male or female) ask them where they go and give that a try. If you don't know any, you're just going to have do some searching, try the yellow pages and see if anybody in your area specialzes in long hair care. The most important thing to remember is let the stylist know what you want and what you don't want, do not let them have a free for all on your head. If they don't listen, find some one else that will. A bad haircut can take a while to recover from so it's not worth spending the money for someone that will not do what you want them to do.
Hey S'Real
Thanks alot for your response. There's one thing I don't understand though, why are you saying that to get this look it will take 2 years. My dad has had his hair like this back in the 70's and he said it didn't even take him a year.
Carlos
How long it will take to grow for you is a hard question to answer, on average, you get about 1/2 inch per month, so you should have about 6 inches after a year. Of course everybodies hair growth rate is different. I seem to get more than that myself, and if your father did, then you might too. You'll just have to wait and see.
And I would wait for a year before any trims since your hair is buzzed now, but I wouldn't wait that long to start looking for a stylist.
Good Luck
Hey there, gentlemen!
I thought I would jump in on this "chat." I watch this board a lot because my husband is growing his hair out now.
I am an assistant at a hair salon and work with a stylist who has more male clients then female clients. It is mostly because she deals well with long hair on guys. She gets a lot of musicians.
We have seen quite a few guys come in with pictures of Scott and want their hair cut the same way. Here is some advice for you #1) Scott's cut is a VERY hard cut to do well and make it look natural. You will have to really spend the money, go to a LONG hair specialist and this is worth doing research on and #2)The reason why the other guys said it takes long to grow hair like this is because in order to get it to fall into place with the feathered look in back it all needs to be a couple inches longer to begin with. Stylists would rather have your hair longer to begin with so that they can see where you have cowlicks and odd wave patterns, etc.
So, even though your hair may end up as long as Scott's in a year, you my advice is to let it grow a couple inches longer then his before you get it cut like his. I agree that you can still have it shaped a bit while it is growing out but be careful you do not go to a person who will be too scissors-happy.
Good luck, that is a nice look if you can get it:-)

hi carlos,
in every way, i fully agree with s'real. . .he knows what he is talking about. . .you want to find a stylist who will work with you. . .when i moved into a new city, i simply asked guys who had good heads of hair, where they got it cut. . .helps you to find a stylist who is willing to work with long hair and not cut, cut, cut.
i think you should get a pic of scott s, and set it aside. . .honestly, if your hair is buzzed, you won't need to see anyone for close to a year. you said your father's grew in a years time? good for him! but i think this would be an exception to the rule of 1/2 inch a month of growth per month. . .who knows? maybe it won't take as long. . if not, then congrats! his is basicly all one length with a few layers around his face anyway and a shag kinda cut at the bottom.
when you DO go to stylist, make sure you take a good pic. . .a pic is worth a thousand words (and several inches of hair) to a stylist! but, for a while, you just need to let it grow.
god luck!
