I just wanted to share a theory I have and get some viewpoints. Although i've noticed on this board that there are still men who get laughed at for having long hair, I think long hair for men is slowly beginning to gain the sort of status it has long held for women. Think about it - fashion comes and goes, but men with long hair are always around, albeit in varying numbers depending on the fashion of the time, just as women with one length long hair are. For example, remember when the "Rachel"/Jennifer Aniston haircut was in fashion for women three or four years back? At that time some styles would have looked very old fashioned in comparison - e.g the 80's frizzy perm - while long, one length hair, although not a hot trend, never went away completely and was considered traditional rather than outdated. I think the same is true for men now. While long hair for men is not traditional as it is for women, I don't think the style ever really goes away - a man with one length long hair would not be considered as outdated as a man with a mullet or a David Copperfield/Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" style bouffant would be. I'd be interested to hear if people agree or disagree.
As a stylist/owner of a men's (exclusively)grooming resource center for over ten years,I must agree with you that a man with one length long hair is not considered outdated at all compared to a man with a mullet or a David Copperfield/Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" style bouffant. It is my experience that one-length long hair on men is a constant which has never gone "out of style".
I agree to a large extent.
I think that me who have all one length hair will always be viewed as a "hippie". What is interesting is to figure out how people view hippies. It depends entirely on where you live and the people you are around.
Place a man with all one length hair, wearing jeans, a tee shirt, and tennis shoes (pretty neutral clothing) in San Francisco and you will get one reaction. The same man, same clothes in New York City, London, or any small town in the mid west will get a different view point each time. He will be celebrated one place, ridiculed another. This has little to do with fashion, and everything to do with stereotypes.
