I have my hair cut in a kind of bob style, cut all one length, straight across the back, just above my collar. I have fine hair which dries quickly and is a little wavy. While my hair looks ok when I dry it with a blow dryer and brush, I'd like to know what I could do to style it so it comes out very straight. I've seen guys with the same bob cut but with perfectly straight hair, and it looks awesome. I may never be able to achieve that with my hair, but I'd like to come as close as I can. What kind of things can I try? I don't mind setting my hair or doing whatever might work, but I don't want anything damaging like a perm or chemical straightening. I like my hair to look as healthy and shiny as it can. I don't know very much about hair styling, so even simple things which may be obvious to experienced people may help me. Thanks.

Doug,
What I've seen my hairdreser do with my curly hair is to blow it dry over a large round brush. Take sections out from the head, put the brush under, without wrapping the hair around it, and slide the brush from scalp to ends with the blow dryer following close behind. This usually results in a straight smooth style. If you wrap around the brush, the more you wrap the more bend, wave, or curl you will get.
Alternatively, you could set on the biggest rollers you can get in your hair. Hot rollers would not be good, because they tend to curl the ends too much. However, after brushing out, smooth plastic or velcro rollers in a wet set would give you a smooth look, with a bit more fullness than the round brush.
Doug,
Try some styling mousse. You can get it it foam-spray cans from most supermarkets. Don't get the sort that says it's for making curls!
Wash and condition your hair, then towel-dry it so it is still damp. Comb it through.
Use generous dollops of mousse into the palm of your hand, and work it through the hair from root to tip. Comb it through evenly and shape your hair into the way you want it. Let it dry naturally. It should keep most of the waviness out.
Alternatively you could try using a styling wet-look gel, but this may not give you the look that you want.
Hope this helps,
Steve
