Just thought you might all get a kick out of this.
A couple of days ago, I celebrated my birthday. I am the manager of a staff of 8, mostly women. I have, by far, the longest hair of any guy where I work (hey, it's a financial services company in central Virginia!), and it's only a little past my shoulders--oh, and I had only recently started wearing it in a ponytail.
Anyway, at our staff meeting, they did the birthday thing for me, but what cracked me up was that each of them walked up to where I was sitting, and they all dropped ponytail holders on the table in front of me, as though they were making a birthday offering! It was hysterical! We all got a huge laugh out of it, and it made me feel good that I worked in a place where it was OK enough to have long hair that I could get ribbed for it in good humor.
Just thought this might be an encouragement to all you guys out there who have been abused for having long hair--it's not the same everywhere!
construction workers on the PA Turnpike),
Ah...Construction workers. I'm old enough to all-too-clearly remember
American flag decals on the sides of safety helmets...America, Love It Or Leave It..."Get a haircut, you commie faggot"...The construction worker riot that ensued after the American flag at NYC City Hall was placed at half-mast, for the victims at Kent State....
And yesterday morning..6:50 AM...Midtown Manhattan...6 or 8 construction guys waiting for the work day to begin. One removes his hard hat to reveal six big perfect cornrows ending in shoulder length braids. Another has a mid-back ponytail, medium brown at the scrunchie, pale blonde and curly at the ends. He offsets this with two sets of hoops in his double pierced ears. One set about 1/2 inch, the larger set, about 1 inch.
Sure, a couple of the older guys still looked like John Wayne wanna-bes, but its getting harder to spot a work gang without at least one longhair.
Keep it growin...
