I had a look at the bob cut pages and it seems as though there are as many variations of the bob cut as there are people. It also seems to me at least that some cuts would be OK for guys whereas others look just too feminine. I liked the Sandra Bullock pic which Cath posted previously and also something like the current Gillian Anderson bob. I have also linked here a style worn by Samantha Matthis which I like. Unlike some guys who have their hair cut shorter into a bob I am trying to grow mine at the moment and am thinking of growing it into a bobbed style in the short term and then probably growing it longer from there.
I would be interested in whether others agree that some bobs are just too feminine and if thats the case what is the reason for this (because I can't figure out what it is). Also any views on a suitable bob cut to start with and grow longer from (I really do like all the cuts from GA, SB and SM as I mentioned above).

Hi Paul,
Firstly I think that the image you posted would be great and very acceptable for a man and would also form a good basis for you to grow your hair longer if you wished.
Your comment about some bobs not looking quite right for a guy is probably true, although of course what is acceptable is in the eye of the beholder. I general I would say that very angular bobs like the graduated bob and also bobs where hair at the nape of the neck is cut very short are more for women than men. However, the sort of picture here and Sandra Bullock type bob which is perhaps less geometric and of a softer definition would be fine. I think that very sharp cuts i.e. where the hair is all one length but cut to a definite line around the head are also on the borderline of acceptability. Conversely curling your hair under seems to be quite acceptable for a man. I would also have said once to avoid long bangs, or growing out your bangs completely so hair gets in your eyes - I know some guys consider this very sexy on women - however, I am beginning to change my mind depending on the cut - for example the Gillian Anderson cut that Jayme had (and the pic is posted in my reply to him above) has one length hair with the bangs grown out, but the way it is styled away from the face looks great. If you do not want long hair around your face and eyes (it can be a pain unless you can style it back or secure it back) then the image here and the Sandra Bullock cut both show that short bangs are fine too.
I hope this helps a bit. Less us know what you decide.
Cath
My hair is in a bob just below my chin...I resisted this cut but my wife and hairdresser ganged up on me, and now I enjoy it quite a bit. The good thing is that you can wear it femme--by rolling it, putting it back in a headband, etc.--or masculine by just blow-drying it straight and brushed back. Now, of course, they want to cut my bangs, which I think will look a bit too much like a perky coed. Any opinions on bobs-n-bangs will be most appreciated.
