Well after much deliberation, I got a trim today!
I have been growing my hair out from a normal short hair style for about 18 months and just got fed up with the bad hair phase.
I am happy with the results and would reccomend a maintenance trim for anyone in the same situation as me. I did not have the sides or top trimmed, only the back. My hair is now nearly all one length (about 8 inches all the way around just below my ears on the sides)and I now have a "style" that does not look like I am trying to grow my hair out. I have no plans to get another trim until all of my hair reaches my shoulders all the way around.
Just wanted to share my experience as I have been frustrated and tempted to just get it all chopped off up until today!
Have patience.... Keep it growing, it takes a long time, but it is worth the wait!

Good advice about8 month ago I ignored the 2wk rule and cut 3yrs growth! Instant regret! I'm in the worst stage of growing out!may at trim will help thanx ARBEE
I also got a trim two days ago. My hair was up to my waist but the ends were looking so ratty and it was just overwhelming. I had my friend hack off more than six inches of the length and it is now all even up to my chest. I don't regret doing it...in fact my mane looks healthier and thicker.
Thanks for sharing that. I've preached the maintenance trim sermon before and been roundly criticized for it. The reason women look better when growing their hair out is because they get it trimmed and styled as they grow so each phase (length) is more of a "style." Much better than waiting until you cannot stand it any more so you just get it hacked. Congratulations on handling this in a way that will allow you to look good as you grow!
