I have long hair down to my butt. Usually just wear it in a ponytail.
Sometimes ladies at work braid it for me, but when they do they tie off the botton of the braid.
Fiddling around, learning to braid it myself, I've found that just doing a regular braid from a pony tail band at the top, but not tieing off the bottom leaves a casual unfinished look. The braid holds pretty well for normal activities.
The casual, untied look seems more masculine, sort of like rolled up sleeves.
How about a picture?
Sorry, don't have a scanner, camera, etc. Have posted other pics though.
Tried it again today and instead of a band at the bottom of the braid just hit the bottom of the braid with some hair spray. Lasted a full shift on the psych ward without unravelling.
That is a great style. Babyfine and silky as my hair is (and it won't grow, ten years and it's just barely past my shoulders) when I put little braids in it, they stay pretty well without tying. Another thing I do is have some d-panthenol.. the pure stuff, which is like a very thick ointment. I get it at the health food store and mix it with water and put it right in my hair, it is very good for split ends. I put some of this on the ends of braids to hold them in. It has no smell and is better than any styling gel.
Sting wore his hair that way when he had it long in the late 1980s (around the time of the "Nothing like the sun" album). I once had to go to a Fancy reception and couldn't figure out what to do with my hair and inspired by Sting I had it put in a loose braid and it was perfect. I agree it is like rolled up sleeves, that's a very good way to describe it.
