I am thinking of fixing my son's hair into a French braid soon, but before I do, I just wanted to check with visitors here whether any of the guys here had their hair braided when they were young, or whether there are any parents here that can give me encouragement. Has anyone experienced any negative feedback and if so how did they cope with it?
Tanya--
I trust I will be among many who say to encourage your son to enjoy his hair and support him in doing what he wants to do with it -- if he would like for you to braid it do. If not don't. If you push a style on him he does not like or encourage him to keep his hair long when he doesn't like it, he is surely to go for buzz cuts in the long run. Emcourage and support. Don't impose.

braid his hair at home then see if he likes it.i had long hair when i was younger and it was braided and curled all the time.
it is now 42 inches long and i still wear it braided and curled in large curls.
I have a general question about French Braids on men, how many of us wear such a style?
I recently was lucky enough to have my hair braided in such a way but that was only an exercise to see if it could be done. I liked how it looked but didn't think it would work in public.
How about the rest of you? How many of the guys on this board wear their hair that way? What do the rest of you think about that style on a man?
Interested in your responses,
Madoc
I wear my hairs in a bread in public once in a while but the main problem for me is to actually do it properlly. I'm not used to do it and thus, it is looking terrible when it isn't my wife that help me to do it. But once it is done, I have no problem at all to go in public with it.
At the school here there are a few male student that does wear their long hairs in braid and noboby comment on that.
Last weekend I have enven wear an hair extension at the tip of my braid and this gave me the look of hairs long to my but - wow! What a feeling. I went to make a few erands like that and I was very proud.
Yours
Jean
i have seen this look on several guys, but oddly enough, rarely on just your typical, average, everyday kind of long hair. . .so who do i see it on? motorcycle guys! anytime i am ever around harley davidson fans, inevitably, there will be several guys with their hair french braided. . .and i think it looks so cool. . .although, i'm not so sure i could pull it off. . .but i think it looks great on others.
I have worn my hair in a French braid most of the time for the past five years. It causes no problem whatsoever. I braid it myself. It doesn't look as perfect as when my wife or hairdresser does it, but with all the practice I've had, it looks quite good.
I'm being different today and am wearing my hair in a French twist.

Well, I'm 55 with hair down to my butt. A few weeks ago a lady where I worked asked to braid my hair in a French braid. I let her. I wore my hair in a French braid for the rest of the day. No one said anything about it. When I got home I checked it out in the mirror and it didn't look that bad. So that's maybe why no comments.
Of course I work at a psychiatric crisis center.....but hey...
Remember when wearing an ear ring was "feminine" if you weren't a pirate or a Gypsy.
Good for you medicine horse. I am 52, and my wife gave me such grief all my long haired days. I finally cut it short, and have regretted it to this day. Last week I saw a nice looking man with hair down his back in a pony tail, and his wife had really short hair.
That was the same senerio as my wife and me. she said I embarassed her. So finally I got it cut.
Thanks, but hey....I didn't have the problem of having a wife. Mine divorced me 12 years ago for good cause...but was short corporate hair then.
I find ladies like to play with my long hair, but the ones I date sooner or later get around to asking me to cut it....go figure...
Dear Tanya
My hair is just below my shoulders and I wear it in a french braid almost all the time...I also wear it in a bun from time to time and even french twist with a large clip in it...I get stares but it does not bother me... how old is your son? Maybe just try it around the house to see how he feels about it
good luck!!
How old is you son?
If he is under the age of 12, most folks will just think he is a girl. If he doesn't mind that, then no problem. No reason to correct strangers that you seldom see anyway.
You don't say how old your son is. I think that makes a difference. But if he is old enough to ask for a braid, then by all means go for it. I'm sure he will love it. Don't ever discourage him from trying to wear his hair in "different" ways.
I have long hair now and I often wear it in a french braid. I like how it looks on me and how it feels down my back. If your son wants to wear it I would encourage it, I only wish I had long hair when I was younger(now in my late 20's).
go ahead and braid his hair. after you do he will almost enjoy it so much you will do it all the time. i curl mine and braid it.my hair is 42 inches long.
