I've always had pretty fine hair and a rather high forehead, but recently it seems to be looking even than usual thinner in the front. Now, I'm only 21 so this has me a little worried. I talked with my stylist about it, and she thinks it's from pulling it back (which I try to avoid as much as possible) and just the weight of the hair in general. On the other hand, I was looking through old family photos and it looks (to me anyway) awfully similiar to my father's receding hairline in its early stages. Something else I should note that male baldness runs in the family on my mother's side. So, do you guys think it's either of these factors? Maybe both? If it's purely from stress on the scalp, is there anything I can do about it, besides losing quite a bit of length? My hair just barely reaches my shoulder blades as it is.
Greg--
It sounds like male patterned baldness. I doubt the thinning is from pulling back. Genetics is probably the culpret. There is a medication taken orally which your physician may be willing to Rx called Propecia. Not 100%, and if you've got the bucks you might try a topical medication called Rogaine.
Hopefully by the time you are 40 there may be more effective interventions, but these are the only ones with any proven benefit.

Greg,
If you do get Propecia prescribed be sure your doctor tells you about the down sides like:
- Your female partner shouldn't handle the tablets if a baby is planned / on the way - the drug can be dangerous for the foetus
- You have to take it for life to remain effectful; when you stop it the hair starts falling out again
- it is expensive
Take care and read the label

I've actually been looking into this as well, I'm 24 shoulder length hair that is thinning in general *sigh*
from what I gather Rogine isn't effective permanently since it doesn't attack the root of the problem. Finasteride(the active ingredient in propecia is what effects the production of DHT which is what is responsible for hairloss. If you want to get propecia may I suggest getting Proscar instead. It contains the same active ingredient but its a heckuva lot cheaper.
May I suggest you go to the following URLS

Of course.
