I just saw an archeology docu on BBC (Time Team) about bog bodies (people who had been ritually killed - the usual fertility gods yada yada - and then weighted down in bogs in Ireland. The chemistry of the bog had preserved the bodies to an incredible degree even though they were about 2000 years old). They've found others across northern Europe apparently.
One of the tests they did was on the hair of one of the bodies - they determined what time of year the person had died from analysing the hair! The analysis determined whether the hair at the follice end showed consumption of proteins (usually meat) or vegetable products. Eating of meat/veg altered according to the seasons and natural availability of the food - this variation showed up in the chemical composition of the hair! They weren't able to determine whether the hair was 'bouncy and manageable' but they did find nit eggs. Eugh!
Another interesting point was that these people used an early type of hair gel made from tree resin. This particular tribe was very short so the men piled their hair into a bun on top to make themselves look taller/more threatening (that's the theory anyhow). Just goes to show that there's nothing new under the sun!
Well I thought it was interesting...
Quite interesting indeed. Putting a bun on top of your head to make you look more taller or "formidable", hahahaha, now that's something you don't see very often!
i wonder if us vegos have different hair???
the height things strange for celts (i ussume thats what your talking about)
i thought it wa sinteresting too :)
I saw that show too. It wasn't that the tribe was short, it was just the individual (5'2"). There was another body found that was 6'6".
Here's a link:
What a bummer - 5'2" AND ritually killed. Fate was cruel to that poor guy...
