Hi everybody,
I've had my last haircut in November '05 and I'm glad I've found this board to share my suffering with you :-)
Now after finishing university & being a full-time musician, I've decided to conform the "long haired musician"-cliché and let my hair grow...
According to http://gregl.net/longhair/longhair.htm I'm still in "Bad-Hair Phase, Stage 1: Big Hair", but I feel "Bad-Hair Phase, Stage 2: Hair in Your Face and Ears" coming with big, big steps.... :-)
I have very thick hair, and I worry about it getting too curly when longer... never really had them longer than maybe 3 or 4 cms, only the bangs were always longer (~5-6 cms). Now after about 2 1/2 months after my last haircut I've reached about 6cms overall (bangs 9 cms) - ain't that quite much progress?
But believe me, it's hard, all those hair in front of my eyes! Fortunately I'm wearing glasses. Follow the link below for two pictures. As you can see from the older picture, I used to use spray or styling gel to keep the bangs up, but now there's simply too much hair, so I let it hang down. Quite new experience... Sometimes I really like this new look, but somestimes I looks so tousled (is this the right word? no native speaker, sorry). those hair are damn hard to control now. Is this getting better when it's longer?
Please keep your fingers crossed for me getting over this bad hair phase...
Best regards from Karlsruhe, Germany & thanks for listening,
Alex
PS.: Unbelievably, last weekend - without me mentioning the hairy topic - three of my closest friends made compliments about my new hairstyle, wow... :-)
I'll post monthly updates...
Oh wow! I never imagined that my own progress pictures would be used as a source of encouragement already for new growers.(blushing)
Hi Alex,
Like the others said there are a lot of ways to restrain your hair until it gets longer: hats, bandanas, headbands, lots of mousse or gel, bobby pins, clips, etc... Or you can just do like I do and let it hang. It makes it difficult to see sometimes but I just keep telling myself that in a couple of months I'll be able to tuck my bangs behind my ears.
Good luck
P.S. I'm a native English speaker and I understood you quite well. :-)
Hi Alex, welcome to the board!
The awkward stage doesn't have to be that bad. The hardest part with straight hair was keeping it out your eyes. When it is long enough to put behind your ears it gets easier. I kept thinking I would use gel or something and never bothered with it.
Everyone comes up with their own way of getting through the awkward stage.
This site does attract many musicians, it feels like non-musicians like myself are in the minority (I wonder if this is true?).
True indeed. Mainly due to the fact that rock musicians are synonymous with long hair.
Hi, and welcome to the board!
It is good to see someone from Germany here.
I noticed that you are a bass guitarist, me too.
Long hair will definately suit you.
You have to deal with overcoming and dealing with the awkward stages. This requires experimentation and creativity. If hair goes in your face why don't you try wearing a hat, bandana, beanie. Try a side part or even slick your hair back with gel.I can assure you that once your hair is long enough it will sit nicely in a ponytail and won't irritate you constantly.
Please keep growing and take care. I would also encourage that you take progression pictures every month for your own satisfaction and inspiration. You never realise how much your hair grows until you see past pictures of yourself. Keep growing in Germany!
