Now that I have grown my hair long, I'm finding everyone that knew me with short says I look so much better with short.
I'm thinking maybe its because I have no style to it yet.
I mean with short I styled it a certain way.
The long hair I just grew it out and thats about it.
Thing is I really dont know how to style long hair due to lack of life experience. What do most of you do?
Do people clip bangs, get their hair laired, ect?
I usually just have somewhat of a part in center and comb it sorta of back, and it hangs down on the sides. I have been thinking maybe I should lighten my hair too. For some reason since I grew my hair long, I keep atracting the Goth type females. I'm not goth, I just have dark hair. I'm not into vampires or death or grim by any means. I just really need some advice about styling here, cause I am at a loss as to what I should do.
I had people tell me the same thing. The hair can look pretty bland, maybe even bad, during the time you grow it out and go through the awkward phase. Just ignore them. For me, once I could tie it back into a ponytail (whether my hair was up or down - but at about that length) people stopped with comments about how my hair looked shorter.
It's like repainting a car and looking at it when it's all in primer. Most people would say it looked better before you started working on it, but it's not finished yet. Once the car is painted, I'm sure most people agree it looks good. Same sorta thing when growing your hair out. KEEP GROWING!!!
Thanks, thats something to think about.
I do however not want much more in length.
Its been growing now for 2 years and 7 months (going on 8 soon)
I never wanted mid back or anything, but maybe it will look a little nicer when it gets a few more inches. Still I wish I knew if it was common to never cut your bangs, or cut them and not the rest, or getting layers, or whatever. I'm just clueless when it comes to style for longhairs
Yeah, I didn't realize your hair was that long, probably similar to mine as I've been growing about the same length of time. Not sure really - without causing some hair damage - what you can do for different styles. But I'm sure someone here will come up with an idea. And if people don't like your tied up or down, too bad for them! I'm sure there are lots of people that like your hair as you have it now, but just don't comment on it. If it were me, I wouldn't worry about the people bugging you about a hair style. I've learned to just do what "I" like, and who cares what others think. You can never please all the people all the time.
Although, since your hair is probably about the same length as mine (or probably a bit longer), I'd say in a year our hair will look even better. Right now is kind of like a "secondary" awkward phase.
I wore a bandana rolled up and tied around the top of my head most of the time in the akward phase. Sometimes a hat. This is what got me a lot of negative comments, but it was better than having hair get in my eyes and all over my face. Then it got long enough to tuck behind my ears, then long enough for a ponytail.
Good luck!
Pulling it back it great for quickness, but I'm at a length now where I can leave it hanging. Its been growing for 2 years and 7 months now. I really want to wear untied, jsut unsure of how I need to style it or maybe the proper haircut I need for it
Oh, ok. I didn't know your hair was that long already. If you haven't had a trim, you might try that, just to tidy it up. At the length you have now it should be fine. I had a trim at the two year mark and had a minor set back where I got a bunch of flyaways (but had to have a fair bit taken off in some places due to hair dye damage from the early days).
It depends on your hair type. I've discovered mine is thin and fine, and not much I can do with it. It's either tied in a ponytail or I leave it down. Haven't had any comments on it in quite a while.
Goths don't need to be into vampires or to be grim or whatnot. Common stereotype. The vampire is the "symbol" of gothicism, but in the same way that all Christians don't bow down and worship their god, all goths don't follow the ol' bloodsucker. I'm not goth myself, but I just thought I'd clear that up.
The ponytail is the most obvious styling option; after that comes half-tails, braids, cornrows, segmented ponytails, plaits, pigtails for the adventurous, bangs behind the ears or in front etc, brushing hair back or parting, etc.. There are tonsss of styles to try, dude. Long hair offers more styling options than short hair overall, I'd say.
Even the height at which you tie your ponytail is a style. Low ponies at the base of the neck are the typical male style, but you can tie it wherever the heck you want; tying the pony lower down the strands of hair, like where your hair hits the shoulders, is another style, although admittedly I've mainly seen this on women. Hell, just the color or type of your ponytail tie is a style.
So you see, it's all up to you. Be creative.
Peace
I should have been more clear, the type that have been hitting on me are all into those things I mention
Havea look at Jason's post below. Whilst i would not suggest you cut it that short - at 2+ years you must be way down your back - the same tidy blunt ends will work for you now.
Its not that long. I started with no length on sides, and half inch on top. There was a couple trims along the way as well which slowed it down.
The last time I went for a clean up, I had the whole thing cut all the way around to be about same length. Front, it hangs at colar bone area, and in back I would say its about upper shoulder blade area.
Then if you REALLY feel you need a cut folow Jason's way.
Well I think it more of people have there own preferences.
For me, I generally dont date women with short hair becasue I dont find short hair on a female atractive.
The same could be said for us guys with long hair by many women.
I can respect that, and its ok. We all have things or ways we like more than others. To be honest, I do like the long hair, though it takes more time then I would like, but I also like the way I looked with short hair. It took a long time to do as well. LOL I've yet to find an easy stayle that was quick, looked good and everyone liked on me. Some day maybe.
I'll take a look at the sites you mention. Would be great if there were more long hair men style pics on the net, but its usually just womens that I can find.
Hi JD,
in my own experience, the two quickest and easiest hair styles are
1) buzz-cut [totally out of discussion] and
2) pony tail [which is what I do - works perfect even with curly or frizzy hair]. In the morning, I brush my hair, put it into a hair band, and then I forget about it throughout most of the day (except perhaps, when I write about it on this board). For me, this hair style looks right (when I see myself in the mirror or on photographs), and most of my environment is used to it now, and some can't even imagine what I look like with short hair (have been wearing it long for almost 14 years now).
Hope you find what feels good to you - my hunch is that you will like your hair better and better as you keep growing it.
By the way, a woman at my work place is trying desperately to find her dream man, he's supposed to wear long dark locks ;-) Women who like long-haired men usually have problems finding Mr. Right because too many men are too insecure as to grow their hair out. I also think that you'll fascinate quite a few women simply by being assertive - and your hair is definitely a part if the great package deal they'd get! I wouldn't go for a girl friend who wants to custom-tailor a man specifically to her whims and preferences, they're immature - better stay single a bit longer ;-)
Good luck,
Hans-Uwe
Hi JD. Personally i am not one into feminine hair styles such as braids, buns etc but if you want to find a good style i will give you a few tips. You might want to get a fringe cut, that will most definately look cool if done right. You could also experiment with parting your hair to the sides, instead of in the centre. I quite like half-tails, maybe try that. Just experiment. What about wearing a bandana over your head with your long locks flowing out the back? just like how Axel Rose did.
What about dreadlocks?
what about a mullet?
the options are endless.
You know what would be great is if there were more long haired men style pictures on the net. I've been searching for a good site with no luck.
As for mullet, thats a big no no, and same for dreadlocks.
I kinda like the half tail thing sometimes, but then I feel like I have a mullet at the same time and it bugs me.
Wearing a bandana is ok, but it really depends on where I am going. If I am going out with friends to a club for instnace or out with a girlfriend, I cant be wearing a bandana. It would just look tacky

Here is a hairstyle that is about your length, yet one that is in really cood condition and 'styled'.

I personally like the wild disheveled look that is a little bit tiered. If you can pull it off, this might be a good look. Of course having the face and body wouldn't hurt you look either. LOL

Although many on this site may not like this, it might just be an option? It all depends on what you yourself like the best. To be just a little bit different can be lots of fun. For what it's worth.
