Ive been growing my hair for about 19 months with no trims. The front of my hair is soft and smooth, put the back is the complete opposite, it looks like a stack of hay very dry and curly. Im almost positive I have split ends but dont know how to approach the problem, I would like to cut them my self but need some sense of directions. Also is this split ends?

thanx any advice on helping me get over this split end problem will be very useful.
Some of those pics were hard to see any detail, much too blurry and close. Just get a trim, it's that simple. Or do it yourself, like how i did. In the end a 1/2" loss of length will be feasible for healthier better looking hair and peace of mind.
Also is this split ends?
i personally think it's only split end if the hair has a "Y" or "V" form at the end (-> 1 hair strand become 2 hair strands) ...
with this twisting method also shorter hairs will stand out of the twist - every hair has a different length ...
maybe it's a good start to twist the hair but with this method u shouldn't cut all hairs which are spreading out of the twist - u should only cut these with a "Y" or "V" form at the end of the hair ...
otherwise i think u may cut healthy, shorter hairs ...
or like 80's metal said - if unsure get a trim ... u might lose a lil bit more than cutting only the damaged hairs but then u r sure to have all damaged ends remove (but not too often like i did in past - it will take a long time to get long hair then)
these pics are too blurry ...
don't give up and keep growin',
