I hope someone out there in cyberland can help me. I started growing
my hair out when I was 15, from a crewcut. Five years later it is just
past shoulder length. Any advice on what to do to help it grow faster
would be greatly appreciated. Also, any advice on how to tame my
exceptionally frizzy hair (POOF!) would be great; I can't even leave
it down without it going crazy!
Thanx!

Hey JimEd
I might be able to help some.As far as your hair growing faster , I don't think you can do anything about that.I started growing my hair at 15 also and now at 25 it's only to my belly button. Your hair will grow as fast as it can. But as for the frizzys theres this stuff by Paul Mitchell called "Glosse" it's like a wax, but not greasey or sticky you can use it on wet or dry hair and it makes you hair feel great. And if it can tame my wild frizz I'm sure it will help you.
Take care
Hey Dan, I believe drinking a lot of water helps to make your hair grow faster, maybe 64 oz a day. SO you have really been growing your hair for 10 years and it is only to your belly button huh? No major haircuts in between? Only trims right? How often do you trim and how much off for each trim? Has your hairline receded any? I am also 25 and have had problems with losing my hair but rogaine seems to be bringing it back. What length hair do you desire?
Hey Merle Unruh,
I drink alot of water reguardless but, I never heard it makes your hair grow. And I have been growing it for ten years and I get it trimed about every two or three months and usually get 1 and 1/2 inches cut off. how often do you trim yours? and How long is it now? As for my hairline receding. I don't have that problem (knock on wood)
but, when I put it in a ponytail I don't pull it back that tight. And
I try to brush the top forward . not always back. and my desired length it to my butt then probably..................off.....maybe?
Hair usually grows about 1 cm a month, that is 12 cm a year (about 5 inches). If you have 3 - 4 trims with 1 and 1/2 inch a year most of it is lost. I think it is reasonable to trim it 1 cm (1/2 inch) every 3 months. It worked for a longhaired woman I know (with almost butt lenght hair). From other women I heard, that they trim it (or let it trim) individually, to avoid too much hair loss. That's what I am intended to do, but it's not long enought yet (only 20 cm).
I think wolfgang is right, thats what your problem is dan, your either trimming too often or you are taking too much off for each trim, provided you take good care of your hair I guess you could trim less often or trim less off per trim. My own hair is just up to my shoulders and I have a lot of split ends so I can't really even have it that far and will have to trim it.
That's not much hair growth, and at your age you should get more length than that. Perhaps you are damaging your hair, which isn't hard to do with frizzy hair, because it is the most fragile.
For one thing, you should never brush extremely frizzy hair. It will just catch in the bristles of the brush and pull, causing damage. And you should try to comb your hair only once a day. In the morning after your shower is a good time. But comb it very gently, starting with the ends first. The aim is to get out the hairs that have become loose in the last 24 hours. If you use a conditioner, its slipperiness should help with this operation; if you don't, a very gentle wash in the scalp area will assure that hair oil has run down into your strands at this time, and the oil will help you comb and minimize damage. Be aware that wet hair is weaker than dry, though, so be very careful when combing.
The rest of the time, try to keep your comb in your pocket and detangle and neaten up by combing with your fingers. But do this the minimum you need, because every combing, once your hair has begun to dry, aggravates frizziness! (A lot of guys with frizzy hair mistakingly think the frizziness is something that combing will reduce, so they comb more than straight-haired guys do, when with their weaker hair, they should be combing less.)
Another idea is to pull down on your strands with one hand as you comb with the other. This will straighten your strands out for the moment and reduce tangling, and reducing tangling prevents damage. Also, wrapping a hand around your strands and gently squeezing while pulling down, while your hair is still wet or damp, will help spread oil down. Try this for a few minutes after washing. The warmth of your hand and compression of your hair strands at this time will also tend to iron your hair into waves instead of frizz.
Good luck with your wild and curly hair!
Bill
I'm going to pass since I don't use Rogaine and there are plenty of guys on the board with straight hair who can answer your question with their own experiences. Let's hear some of them!
