Hi, this is Ken. I like my hair long, but am looking for a job as a Director of Music at a Catholic Church. Do you think I lessen my chances of getting a job if I don't cut it short?
I am not sure, hard to say. The best bet is to just keep growing it, ask the parish or priests about it and see what happens. Musicians have long hair so that is an excuse . However i think the Catholic Church might be against long hair because they are conservative. It is ironic since Jesus had long hair.
It's going to depend entirely on the atmosphere of the local parish and the personality of the priest. One Catholic parish may welcome you with open arms, and another may treat you like a pariah. Do some research on both parishes and priests. If you are not an insider to the Diocese, find someone who is, preferably a musician or music director already employed in the diocese. Find out which priests lean to the liberal, which parishes are more open minded.

Hi Ken,
In my experience, long hair has not been a problem in the Catholic church. I have seen some pretty freaky looking music directors, at least in some bigger cities, in Germany. If you have good music credentials, I don't think hair's a problem. My advice is, stay away from haircuts and feel good about yourself.
The Catholic church definitely has NO genuinely theological issues with long hair - I'm sure Jacob would confirm that. (Referring to 80s_Metal, I'd be surprised if things were THAT different in Australia).
In any case, good luck with your job search! I'm sure you'll find a good parish.

You know what? I am listening to Sister Act film songs, Hail Holy Queen, then I stumble upon this post. Maybe it's a sign that you'll have great luck!
Salve Regina!
It all depends on who is running the show at a particular parish. Hard question. (Like a toss of the dice.)
Only speaking for myself, I wouldn't cut. There is always another parish looking for a musician. Besides, what if you cut your hair and didn't get the job?
I can't vouch for the Catholics, but Presbyterians don't seem to mind.
