one of the reason that i wanted to grow my hair long in the first place was because of my love for poetry. i guess long hair always seemed a bit poetic to me so i thought it would complement that aspect of my personality. do any of you guys here write poetry in your spare time?
i am so excited because i got informed that another one of my poems is going to be published . i sent one in for scholarship consideration and now they have told me that i am a finalist and that my poem will be published soon. im going to be getting a copy of the book. so far i have only sent two of my poems in for this kind of stuff, and to my surprise both of them ended up getting published.=) i cant wait for that book to come in. here is the poem that i sent in, by the way. its a blank verse poem so basically it has no ryhme scheme or definite meter. (although lately, i have been writing shakesperean form sonnets.)
Aura of Despair
unyielding contemplations of what is to come
a non concrete future as all
nothing written in stone
infinity scenarios of varying events
never certain which applies
oh how sweet it could be
to take a momentary glance at post currency
to at that one moment
have no doubts
no fears
for what is to come
is possession of the mind
what if the foreseeable
was not pleasant and fair
thus cheapening the remainder
of ones existence
for no matter what
they will wither away
in an aura of despair
Congratulations on getting another poem published. That must be a cool feeling. Can you write about anything you want or is there some theme for the book you sent that poem in for?
Longhair and creativity seem to be related, they both involve breaking boundaries, I suppose.
I liked this poem because of the flow of feelings it gave. A first the uncertainty and trepidation of looking at the unfinished future, then a feeling of what would it be like to really be unafraid of whatever comes. This was a very positive and hopeful feeling that carried through the rest of the poem. Ironically I didn't feel the despair at the end, but still clung to the hopeful feeling from earlier.
Don't know if that's how you meant it, but everybody brings their own view to the same words.

you could write on any topic. there was a limit to the number of lines though.
so very true
well, what i meant for this poem to mean is this. nobody knows what is going to happen to them in the future. the poem is kind of like "what if i could look into my future and know all that is going to happen?" it talks about how that would be beneficial in a way because then you would not have to worry about the future. you would know what was to come. but then the poem takes a turn and states that if the future was not bright and you knew that it wasnt going to be bright then it would cheapen the remainder of your existence. you could not enjoy life with the negativity of what bad was to come looming over your head. so basically, if you somehow knew your future and it was bad, you would wither away in despair. so, basically the theme would be that not knowing is probably best.
I'm a poet myself, as I said before, and yes, there's a somewhat stereotypical connection between the poet image and long hair - male poets are often viewed as more sensitive, feminine, even (not in the contemporary sense, but in the ancient sense of the female elements and female traits, like being quiet, calm, night-oriented, etc), and long hair is seen as an extension of these traits. Also, poets are supposedly closer to the world, and long hair is a call back to an older time, particularly super-long hair.
I like the last few lines of the poem and the mix of words you chose, like "concrete" and "aura." Good job on being published, and may you have many more done in the future.
My one critique is that it seems more like a "telling" poem than a "showing" poem, if you catch my drift - it tells you its message straight out. Poems shouldn't be obscure and overly abstract, of course, but I guess I'm just more used to different kinds of poetry. You're writing in the contemporary style, which is less elaborate than the romantic styles, but all in all, that doesn't make your poem any less excellent. And if it was selected to be published, it has to have touched someone strongly!
Do you ever do Nature poems?
yep, ive written a few. not any recently though. im more in to the story poems. im working on a series called The Disease right now. its about vampires and such.lol
lol, cool! I love vampires and mythology and all that good stuff. Rock on, man.
I have occasionally tinkered with writing poetry; but nothing of mine ever turned out that good, --- I'm really impressed with yours!! Thanks a lot for sharing. And I can definitely see why yours is going to be published!
