You are probably still in the awkward stage. Growing hair is not an overnight project. As it gets longer it will even itself out and then flips will dissapear. I promise.
Not allways ...
my waves as you can see from my progress pic, are quite big on the back more than sides (although right side seems to allways be more wavy :S ) u cant promice him that the flips will go they may just get bigger (not trying to discourage you mate)
Play the waiting game....
I never had this problem, but you could try straightening it. It may sound girly, but then again long hair is considered girly too.
I definitely agree with you regarding flips. When my hair was at the 8-10 month stage, I had a flip on my left side. As my hair grew out, the flip disappeared. Not real sure why but I'm glad it did.

Generally when your hair is just starting to grow out it has no weight to provide resistance causing it to curl. Coupled with the fact if you are still washing your hair very often the loss of natural oils makes it more prone to curl.
You can either try a product to hold it in place. Or do what I did and just be an ultra dork
This flip is all perfectly normal in the earliest stages. (There will be many more yet.) If possible ignor all, try not to look in the mirror and just let your hair grow for a couple of years without getting it trimmed. At that point you will know exactly where you stand............and I dare say you will be in for a sensational surprise!
