Hi - I just happened to stumble onto this page because I am looking for any information I can get on how to grow my hair out long. If you are familiar with my hair type, you'll know what I am talking about.
I have always wanted to grow my hair long, but my hair is not super curly, but it's also not straight - it lies somewhere in between. What happens every time I let it grow out a little bit is that it starts to "puff" out, where it grows OUT instead of DOWN .I can't handle the puffiness, and I start to plaster it with gel and hairspray until it reaches a point where I end up going back to the barber to get my ususal low and tight haircut. One idea I had was to just have my barber keep thinning out my hair as it grows long, but I think that might give it an un-natural appearance. I really like the style that Fabio has, as well as Antonio Banderes (when he had long hair)- but maybe that kind of style isn't in the cards for me...Any advice, links, ideas , pictures, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Everyone who grows their hair from a v. short haircut (I grew mine from a skinhead) has to endure the bad hair phase (which includes puffing). All you can do is use the dreaded gel, wear a hat, or grin and bear it.
It took me about 7 months from an extremely short cut to get out of the gel phase. It was horrible but it's worth it now.
Thanks for the input Matt C, oh yeah, did I forget to mention that when it grows out, besides getting puffy, it starts doing flips too??
UGH!!! Buy at least it's nice (nice?) to know that everyone goes through the dreaded bad hair phase, and oh goodie, I only have six months to go!
All the guys just suggested is pretty right on. I would also add that if you want to "straighten it out" a little and make it more manageable, there's a great product out there called "Control Freak" by TIGI. It's sold in salons. They have the shampoo, conditioner, and styler. The styler is awesome. Best stuff I've ever seen. It makes our hair feel like silk, detangles, and then you can style it straight (BIG round brush and blow-drier on low heat, and not every day!), and you can get it as straight as you want. My hair is normally slightly wavy and I like it very very straight. I travel a lot for a living and this stuff works in all levels of himidity, including Kaui and New York in summer! Let us know what happens!
Miaka.
You probably just have to hang on for a couple months. You will find that as your hair grows, the hair's own weight will tend to keep it down. That's the way it was for me.

If you worry about your hair all the time it'll drive ya nuts. Just try to concentrate on other things for a while. Keep busy with work or hobbies, and in a few months it'll be better.
