Hey guys!
I don't think this has been addressed before. When someone with curly hair makes a ponytail, the front/sides are pulled essentially straight or into a tiny, constricted series of waves. Does this cause a true loosening of the curls over time, if say, one were to wear a ponytail often, or even for a couple hours a day?
My hair is long enough for a ponytail where I put my bangs and some of the side hair behind my ears and can make a rather unique rendition of a ponytail behind my head. I decided to wear one today for the first time in public (a bit scary actually, lol, especially the rebel curls that are determined to stick out like bent springs from the side of my head) and found that after taking out the tie, my curls were A LOT looser. My bangs that hang at eye-level normally were down to my nose end. A subsequent ponytail unloosing found my bangs down to my MOUTH. Tasty stuff. But will this loosen my curl permanently? Is it good to have your hair stretched like this often? I'd love to wear a pony every now and then as a change of style, but the last thing I want is to lose my curls...
Any thoughts/experience on this? Mahalo!
i doubt you have to worry about losing the curls. just think of it this way. if a curly haired person straightens their hair with a flat iron then it is straight for a while. but when they wash it is right back to being curly. so, im sure that the curls will go back to normal after a washing. i remember before i cut my hair it was getting long enough for a small ponytail. after i would take it out my hair would be a lot straighter. the wave was basically gone. but right after i washed my hair it was back to normal. so really, a ponytail could be considered a non damaging straightening method. of course you dont want it to tight or it might cause some breakage and damage. hope this helped.
Funny thought for us straight hair's. The wearing of a tail tends to put curls/waves in the area it was tied (more so when worn all day). Just thought I'd toss that up as well.
No, if i dont wash it for two days and leave it in a pony tail while is sleep and it looks really strait and cool. But as soon as it gets any moisture it goes away. So no it does not make it perminant. For me anyways.
It has to do with the structure of your hair.
Straight hair has an almost perfectly circular cross section. Curliy hair has a flattened cross section, the flatter it is, the more curly it gets.
There are a few things you can do to curly hair to straighten it out...for a while. But it eventually go back to it's natural state. Adding water generally makes it go back to curly faster.
Thanks guys! Sorry I didn't get back to you all sooner.
