Um, I've noticed that with long hair (especially slightly longer than shoulder length hair) it's kind of awkward to wash your neck in the shower. I would imagine that soap can't be very good for hair... so... any comments?
I've never had any problem. Before I get in the shower I part my hair at the back and push it in front of my shoulders, allowing me to wash my neck and back. Then I wash my hair and put it all behind me, leaving it out of the way of soap while washing the rest of me. This isn't a conscious soap-avoidance technique, mind, more of a convenience thing to stop hair bugging me.
A few suds can't be that damaging, can they?

I've read quite a few posts on this board of people who find that regualr old bar soap works wonders on their hair. I even remember reading where some have been doing it for years. Considering the ammount of glycerin in used in soap I dont think it would be good for my hair. I have oily hair and mus shampoo every day. I'm willing to bet it would make mine look like I had used conditioner (which makes my hair look like it's been unwashed for several days). I might give it a try one weekend and see what happens. I really dont see anything in regualr soap that would harm hair, but it may make some hair more fragile and therefore prone to breakage.
I've never tried soap but I'd probably fall under that category. It'd be cool to just soap it up and that's it, but my scalp seems pretty sensitive and would probably flake alot and be very itchy.

My hair wasn't long enough for that so i just pushed it in front of my ears.
Why not just wash your neck with shampoo? That's what I do...
why not just wear a shower cap while you shower? then when you're ready to work on your hair you can remove the cap and start working on your hair. my stepsisters all wear shower caps for similar reasons
