hey guys. sorry this is so long. i'm a 22 yr old college student. all my life i've had a 'buzzcut' until i decided that i wanted to grow it out. i look at all your guys long hair and envy it, it all looks so great! i know i know, time and patience. well here's my problem:
i have let it grown out for just about a full year now. i started around beginning of march i believe last year, and have only gotten it trimmed slightly about 3-4x during that period.
i have some irish, spanish, and russian in me and i'm blue eyed, so long hair on me tends to be super CURLY. my hair is also very, very thin, very dry, and i can even have an afro if i pick it out!
i've tried every approach and product i can think of to the advice of other ppl. i tried using straighteners, hair lotions, the 'do nothing' approach, flat irons, etc. i get horrible split ends and the tips are just split or broken, so i get a small trim here and there. but now i want to do them myself, last night i took off like 1/10 an inch which isnt much but makes me feel better.
i want my hair STRAIGHT. i am not trying to look emo though my pics kind of resemble it haha. i want 'shaggy' hair, and then to grow it down to about a few inches above my shoulders. granted it's going through that ugly phase, but it's been about a year and look at my progress it's horrible =( the only way i get it straight without a flat iron straightener (which i hardly ever use anyways) is by getting out of the shower, putting on some relaxing cream, and slicking my hair to the sides while it's wet and letting it dry like that. then about an hour later i comb it down and it's 'somewhat' straight. when humidity comes, ehh it looks horrible.i refuse to use hair dryers either as this just destroys my hair and makes it frizzy and curl.
my hair just gets so frizzy, curly, etc. typical signs of damage heh? but i don't know what to do anymore. every professional i talk to is like 'you must get it trimmed every 2 months or so for it to grow and look healthy, and use some type of product in it. here buy ours!'. aveda just told me to buy 'hang straight.' i bought it from them for $18, used it, and it sucks bad. dries out my hair and makes it look awful.
MY CURRENT REGIMEN:
right now all i do is shampoo about 1x a week with organic gentle shampoo, condition 2x a week with gentle awuphui (spelling?) organic conditioner, vo5 hot oil moisturize treatment 1x a week. then, when i get out of the shower i put in a pinch of vo5 oil and a relaxer cream, then comb it to the sides while wet. then i usually (95% of the time) wear my 'beanie cap' (winter hat). or a bandanna or baseball cap sometimes. but usually beanie.
i'm lost, any help appreciated, here are some pics, the password is 'hair' if it doesn't let you in. my hair looks worse in reality, and is about 1/2 inch longer as well as these were taken a month or so ago.

I can't check out the pictures because the album requires a password. Other than that it sounds like you're doing things pretty properly to your hair.
Maybe all the straightening and such you did to your hair in the past is having a lasting effect? Also, don't listen to any barber who tells you to get so many trims to promote "growth". In my case I only ever got trims to even out layers in my hair.
Well, don't make any rash decisions! Wait it out until more people on the board respond, and even then wait a little longer. I'm sure if you stick it out you'll outgrow any damage. =)
oh i put at the bottom of my original post the password is 'hair'
thanks =)

Whoops. I need to work on my reading comprehension. :D
Well, nothing looks bad to me. You should give it more time before making a final decision.

Hi

Welcome to the Hyperboard Ive viewed your Pictures all of them including your Buzzcut First of all Im lost which set of photos is your current hair after you Buzzcut picture.

You are a good looking guy and you have a nice hair texture. If i was you i would stop trimming your hair, it doesn't even look that long for almost a year. Forget the straightening, it is just damaging your hair and causing the split ends. Learn to love your natual hair texture. I know your hair can look a bit like a 'fro but that is because it is in the awkward stage and needs more time to grow longer. If you hang in there you will have great long hair one day. Good luck.
As a men's grooming professional, I agree wholeheartedly with "80s_Metal" and, likewise, encourage you to hang in there...give your hair a chance to gain some real length...you won't be sorry.
my business (men's grooming) website
just looking for some shampoo and conditioner unless my organic ones are ok. i heard these were less harsh.
also what about product? any straightening lotions or shine products, etc etc you think i should use on my dry curly hair?
In my men's grooming center (NH-USA)I use and recommend the American Crew product line but your organic ones should be OK if using them doesn't make your hair look/feel dry and brittle, etc. I encourage you not to use straightening lotions or shine products. I think the curls are an awesome contrast to the wonderful bone structure evident in your facial features. While your hair is damp from shampooing, apply a SMALL amount of a LIGHT gel and pat the hair to the head for control when the hair has dried. As you gain length, your curls will either form ringlets or waves--both great images in conjunction with your facial features. Using both a quality shampoo and a quality conditioner should take care of the "dry" look/feel.
Hope you will keep us posted as your longhair image evolves. All the best to you!

thanks for the advice. i will return that straightening lotion as it's probably doing more harm then good.
thing is, i do NOT want curls haha. i hate them. some ppl like the curly hair but i dunno, i heard your advice before to go with the 'natural'. i just don't.
i would like my hair to get straight, shoulder length one day. perhaps it would look odd on me but i am far from caring what is 'sexy' or 'in'. i like different and prefer straight and long. thanks =)
Why don't you like curls?!?!
If I had white man afro hair I would NEVER come anywhere near my hair scissors. You should be happy with your hair. It's the hair you were born with, and that God gave you. You're great the way you are, and remember lots of people (including me) would kill for really curly hair!
that is so odd you say you would like curly hair. do you mind posting some pictures of anyone (friends, celebrities, whoever) of curly hair that you think would look good? i keep picturing this red headed Annie singing "Tomorrow!" when i think of curls haha.
thanks =)
Now I think I want to do and retch at the sound of that musical!!!
