hiya,
thought to start a (maybe not totally o/t) thread ...
would interest me which pc system u have ?
(due to i have read that some guys here are into programming and pc hardware and maybe about my stereotype that long haired guys are more interested in computers than shorthairs :))
i will begin with my system (i have currently 1 computer):
cpu: amd athlon 64 3700+
mb: msi k8n diamond
ram/memory: 4x 1024 mb kingston hyperx ddr400
graphic card: msi nx7800gtx
storage/harddisks:
- 4x 400 GB SATA (ibm/hitachi)
- 3x 500 GB SATA 2 (ibm/hitachi)
- 1x 400 GB USB/Firewire (external, seagate)
os: windows xp pro x64 edition
case: totally black, with a plexi-glass window at one side, dark blue illuminated fans
cooling: 2x 120cm fans (3000 rpm) + 1x 80cm fan (3000 rpm), very silent
other: a sata backplane for 3 hdd's with raid 0/1/5 support and a cooling fan at the front using 2x 5.25" slots
greez and interested what u guys have,
ALH
I suppose I qualify as a longhaired computer geek.
I own three computers. The newest is a Dell Dimension 8300 with a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 processor, 2GBytes of DDR400 memory, 400GB (200GB x 2) Seagate hard disks, two DVD drives (one is a writer), an ATI Radeon 9800 graphics card, a 19 inch CRT monitor running at 1600x1200x24bpp at 75Hz, and Slackware Linux 10.2. I bought this computer in 2003 and upgraded the memory, disks, and OS. I also have a 100Mbit wired network.
Connecting all this computing power to the Internet is a 56K modem. That's the computer equivalent of a drinking straw (;-)

What a beast of a machine AustrianLonghair!
That thing sounds like a super computer.
I'm guessing you are a big pc hobbyist.
I used to be heavily into computers and i was thinking of becoming a programmer or a technician but then i got into guitar and...
You must spend a fortune upgrading your machine and keeping it up to date.
I'm not going to even talk about my computer, it is just something modest for family situations, just a standard pc, and my laptop is ok.
Yeah, as if a real geek could get by with only one...

Primary
AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 1 GB registered, error-correcting RAM, 6 ide HDs totalling 3/4 TB, ATI Radeon something, dual 17" LCD displays (2560x1024 res), dual-boots XP and Fedora Core 3 Linux
Test web server and backup repository
Intel P-III 850, 1/2 gb RAM, 3 160GB ide HDs, VGA switched to the analog input of one of the LCD displays (above), Fedora Core 2 Linux
Crash & Burn unit
Same as test server (above) but with 500MHz P-III, currently dual boots Ubuntu 5.10 Linux and Win98SE, but that changes almost weekly
Testing unit for older browsers and PCs
Intel Pentium-I 180MHz, 128 MB RAM, 3 8GB ide drives, no monitor, keyboard or mouse (accessed over the LAN with TightVNC), Windows NT4 Workstation
PRODUCTION WEB SERVER
(Leased, in a rack somewhere outside NYC) Intel P-4 XEON 3.06 MHz, 2GB RAM, 2 120GB SATA-II drives (RAID 1), Fedora Core 2 Linux
OFFICE
Workstation
AMD-64x2 4200+ dual-core, 2GB RAM, 2 200GB SATA-II drives, some nVIDIA-based video card, dual 19" LCD displays (3200x1200 resolution just rocks!), dual-boots XP and 64-bit Fedora Core 3 Linux
File and test web server, backup repository
Intel P-4 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, 5 hot-swappable, sled-mounted SCSI drives (in RAID array), Fedora Core 1 Linux
Thats way too much, I never buy the best because it depriciates in less than 6 months... A 7800GTX cost as much as a mid range system...
my specs
Semperon 2800
Gigabyte K8NE board
512 DDR
MSI 6600 (128 version)
1 60G hitachi deathstar harddrive (I think its on its way out)
1 160G WD harddrive
DVD burner
Creative SB live 24 bit
I put more money into audio system and guitars because they do not depriciate nearly as quickly as computer stuff, and in fact some guitars appriciate.. I do have a new samsung ML-1520 laser printer and an epson c65 connected to it, if that really matters... I plan on selling the epson because I am sick of inkjets using up too much ink, most are wasted doing cleaning function! When you have a printer that runs a cleaning cycle everytime it turns on, you know you will run out of ink quickly. but I still might keep it around for printing photos, because laser sucks at that, even color laser doesnt print nearly as good as inkjets when it comes to photo. However I need the laser around so I can print 50+ page E-books without breaking the bank.
High!
Hmm, let's see what I got here... subordinate computers (except for the Commodore 64, which is definitely NOT FOR SALE!!!) may change from week to week...
Primary computer:
Athlon 64 2800+, effectively 1,8 GHz
512 megs of RAM
74 gigs of harddisk
Secondary computer:
Intel Pentium MMX, 200 MHz
128 megs of RAM
2.1 gigs of harddisk
Tertiary computer:
AMD K6-II, 400 MHz
256 megs of RAM
20 gigs of harddisk
Quaternary computer:
Commodore 64-II (unfortuately not the "breadbin" case...)
64 kilos of RAM
170 kilos of floppy storage
(but, it should be possible to plug a modified SCSI harddisk adapter into the expansion slot...)
See you in Khyberspace!
Yadgar
Oh, I forgot to add that the Commodore 64 runs at a neck-breaking 992 KHz! Since some years, an acceration card exists which contains a 4 MHz CPU... that may even cause relativistic effects on the poor little electrons!
See you in Khyberspace!
my new PC that I built last year (named "gaius" after baltar in the new battlestar galactica) is an athlon64 3200 (venice core) w/ nvidia nForce4 SLI (just one video card, I bought the mobo because the chipset is passively cooled) with 1 Gb RAM, 2 160 Gb SATA-2 Samsung super-quiet HDs, 2 DVD-RW drives.
The case is an Antec p180, which has the power supply in a thermally separate compartment at the bottom, and is heavily insulated for sound. passively cooled CPU, PSU, chipset. three 120 MM fans make it deliciously quiet (its predecessor, now deceased, was the loudest computer in the solar system, I'm sure).
the server-in-the-basement: compaq p4 450, 512 Mb RAM (all it would take)
Macintosh g4-450 (sawtooth) creeping into action with OS X (which seems a bit much for it).
laptop: IBM thinkpad a21p, awfully nifty for about five or six years ago (p3 370 Mhz, 384 Mb RAM), but the display is still quite nice for today (running at 1600x1200).

My PC is coming up to 2 years old but it was the first PC I ever built, and fortunately it worked first go. It was built with silence in mind, and at that, it excels. It has never missed a beat except when the video card gut some dust in it and caused the PC to fail to boot, which was easy fixed. I also use it as a stereo coz I got fed up with buying things that break down. If anything ever does go wrong with THIS "stereo", I know how to fix the problem myself.
Pentium 4 2.8GHz
512MB 3200/400 Kingston RAM
Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo
Seagate 80GB HDD
nVidia GForce MX440 with 64MB video card
LiteOn CD-RW and LiteOn DVD-ROM
Onboard sound and LAN
Zalman flower-shaped cooler for CPU and two 8cm rear fans, all very quiet compared to typical PCs.
Windows XP and MEPIS Linux
Laptop:
IBM Thinkpad 600X
500 MHz P3/256 Mb RAM/12 Gb HD
56k modem or broadband via WiFi wherever it's free
Desktop:
Built by local store, plus additional old junk added
2.4 GHz Celeron D (P4 w/ smaller cache)/512Mb RAM/80 Gb HD
2X (!) CD-R burner
DVD drive
100BaseT Ethernet
56k modem
HP 1215 printer
Flatbed Scanner
54 Mb/s WiFi Router (but no broadband)
