I was reading through the Morrison posts and it seems that they don't discriminate towards Long Haired Men over there like here in the U.S.
Why are U.S companies so intolerant towards us?
i think that theres just generally more conservative people and conservative types in my experience like only one kind of hair......short as in not past the ears
I wasn't aware that they were, at least not on a wholesale basis. I've worked for five different companies since I got out of the Air Force and not one of them has had any problems with long hair. In fact I've only had one boss say ANYTHING about it (this was during the 'awkward stage') and all he said was that it was looking kind of messy and I should do something about it. After that I started wearing it in a ponytail, no problems since.
I'm sure there are some people/companies that are intolerant, but that doesn't mean that all of them are, or even most of them. IN fact, I'd guess that the intolerant companies are the minority.
FWIW I've been watching fox news recently (it's all that's on at the chow hall) and I've seen quite a few long hair comentators on it.
I have to say my experiences tend to agree with what Castaway said. I work for a large US corporation (in IT), and I have actually noticed that more guys around the place (not just IT types) are wearing their hair long..pony tails typically. It appears to (ostensibly) not be an issue there. I am hoping such is the case elsewhere if I need to move on.

What part of the U.S do you reside in? maybe I just need to relocated.
afterall, Florida isn't known for paying decent wages anyway.
Ohio currently. Economy here isn't much better I fear..I saw a poll recently where I believe it placed 47th out of all the states vis-à-vis the health of its economy. It also foists the 3rd highest tax burden on its citizens in the nation the last time I checked..about the same as Hawaii..and they don't even get to enjoy that lovely paradise of a coast we have with Lake Erie.
I think what ails this state are the same things which are ailing/ruining this country as a whole...you just get to see it up close and personal here. I'll leave it at that to avoid getting any more political...

I think long hair is becoming more popular so employers will have to put up with it everywhere.
Long hair is very common in football (of the soccer variety) so I reckon that helps too.
Are you sure that's true. There are five longhaired men (including me) in the building I work in (out of maybe 40 or so in the whole building). I have four other longhaired friends that work in the same general vicinity. I haven't heard much from them about being terribly discrimated against. I personally have had a few issues, but I don't know about the US generally being intolerant to long hair.

Don't know what state you reside in, but Florida's a lot different.
when I'm talking about "intolerant" I'm not referring to customers or postitions such as custodians/construction workers/truck drivers, but more like hospitality/Customer Service Type jobs and such.
Southern Maryland. Of the people I spoke of, most are government contractors of one form or another. One works in IT, two (including me) in logistics and/or procurement, four are technicians, one works as a driver, and one's an engineer.
I live in Waldorf! What part of Southern MD do you live in?
It really depends on the company & the manager. I have long hair (mid-back) and have never experienced any discrimination problems. I work for a large company (100,000+ employees) in a traditionally conservative industry (banking). My direct manager & one of my close peers are both longhairs that have enough length to pull off a respectable ponytail.

What bank is it?
I work for a bank too. It is intolerant to long hair for men.
"Hair must be kept neat, clean, and out of face, and maintained at a professional length" sic, Company Dress Code, wide open to subjective interpretation of course!
That is why I'm having to keep my hair above shoulder length for right now. I've got the longest hair of any guy in the company, and lots of the women too! I bet you're not in the South though.
I work for the Bank of America, and I am in the heart of the south: Atlanta, GA.

Hey, a good ponytail is professional length hair. Those guys with short hair are just amateur! :-)
The law is more favourable in Europe, i.e. you have a legal right to self expression, and in the US you don't!
well i cant speak for the UK, but i guess here in ireland its not much different. in the last few years ive seen a boom in long hairs and especially a lot of younger kids going through those awkward early stages...i guess hair is back :D wooh, heres to a tolerant tomorrow!
Not in Florida. with the exception of a few, most young guys are getting buzzed down here even with the cold spell we've been having.
