A while ago there was a thread about what to do with your hair when you sleep, and someone remarked that women have no problem with that. Here is one of the many LHC threads where you can read a lot of women's comments on the subject:-

We tend to assume that women have all this long hair thing figured out. Maybe, maybe not!

PS: I am trying to imagine some of you guys with either a bun on top of your head or with a pair of pigtails!
i was the guy that made the remark about women having no problem with it. Now that i think about it, some probably do. but my mom for instance has hair that is past her butt. she just puts her hair to the side of her and sleeps. she doesnt tie her hair in any way. but i guess that would leave some people's hair in a tangly mess.lol
It gets me mad why women tend to always have such perfect hair and for men it's so hard to keep it good...
That's not always the case and there are some great examples of some of the posters on the board. It's just about finding a good hair care regime and it's different for all of us.

lol, likewise! But I personally plan to try buns/pigtails/high ponies/in-other-words,-whatever to see what works best. Right now my bangs are still too short to fit in a pony and are so thick that they don't like sticking behind my ears, so it'll be a few months before I invest in any of these styles, much less for sleeping (especially considering the majority I only plan to use FOR sleeping!). Sleeping with my hair loose makes the back of my head look a trampled rabbit-skin carpet, frankly.
But seriously, besides the fact that it's unimportant what others think, it's night-time. Nobody's going to see you. Go mad with styles. Find your inner Jarko.
It seems those women are trying every trick in the book to make their hair more manageable and comfortable whilst they sleep.
I personally couldn't sleep with a rope or big dead rabbit ball under my head, i like to be comfortable and not worry about my hair for atleast 8 hours in the night, lol. Although my hair isn't long yet to require any restraining device while i sleep.
When it gets longer i will probably just sleep with it out, wake up as you do, have a shower as you do, then detangle what the night my have formed in my hair. For those with long hair(.ie atleast 12 inches) if you sleep with your hair out is it really that problematic with tangles and stuff?
I think my mum and sister just sleep with it out and they have mid-back length.
I have no trouble with sleeping with my hair loose.
It may tangle a bit, but it's really not that much. I just fingercomb it in the morning.
It seems gentler on my hair than having it in a ponytail.
I almost thought it was about sleeping with another long hair...
sorry couldnt resist
You mean my wife? Her hair is long too!
I'm surprised there weren't more women who use gravity to keep their hair in place at night. One benefit of having really long hair is that no amount of tossing and turning is going to overcome gravity!
