Well I am nearing the end of my hair growing period. I first started with no goal length however my preference has changed...
I have been growing for 14 months from scratch with a couple of trims to even the back out a little... however I have decided to not have a style past my shoulder for professional reasons (I'm a medical student)...
My hair is thick with waves, ringlets and half curls particularly at the back and end on the hair strand, currently I wear an alice band but would like to stop...
Does anyone know of some good styles that are easy to manage for hair that is medium in length?, I have heard layers are good for those with thick curly hair as it avoids too much bulk and the end and flat hair at the top.
Thanks
I certainly would steer clear of having you hair layered thats for sure. Perhaps you could post an update picture so we that could see. I sounds like you have a great head of hair. Keep it growing.

If your hair is to your shoulders or even a bit above (in actual length, i.e. stretched length, but it's better if your curls themselves can touch your shoulder, because then the actual length will be fairly greater than the visible length and will yield more/easier styles), you should be able to manage a small low ponytail, or a larger higher ponytail; you can also do a small segmented ponytail by tying the tail with 2 hair ties, the second tie lower down the tail, to form a sort of braided look. Or you could do a tiny braid, on that topic.
Even the "cheap" bun is possible - tie a pony, then tuck the end back into the hair tie. This, if done correctly, is very neat.
Oh, and no layers. Layers are evil, or so the dogma seems to be around here.
If you're adventurous, wear 2 low pigtails. ;) lol, I can just picture that on a medical student. Well, not too well, but ya get the idea. I think. Erm. Yep. I'll stop now.
Layers are the absolute worst thing you could ever do to your hair. Avoid them at all costs!
Hi Nik,
I don't think there's a reason to adopt shorter styles just because you are about to graduate from medical school - and I can speak for Germany, Britain ( male doctors with ponytails are still kind-of rare, but no-one gave me any crap when I did a residency / SHO-post there), and (from the experience of two or three friends of mine) for the US.
You'll be a much better doctor if you feel good about yourself and your looks - and chances are high that you still can choose both your specialty AND your region. I know that some conservative medical schools in the US try to manipulate their male students into getting hair cuts - but I'd be surprised if they had any real leverage.
What really counts is good bedside manners (and I have a gut feeling that you are GREAT with patients) - and they don't have anything to do with hair style. As far as appearance goes, just adopt a policy of going along with anything that is reversible within five minutes (such as clean dress shirts and ties), but anything else is your own personal decision.
If you happen to choose an "NPC" specialty like pathology or medical microbiology, then there's even less to worry about.
Let us know how it goes.
Best wishes,
Hans-Uwe
The best style for anyone who may need to secure their hair is one length, which is the opposite of layered. Seriously, if you are in the medical profession and you have mid length hair with lots of layering, you will have a hard time getting your hair into a ponytail, and hair hanging down is frowned upon for medical work. Maybe the concern is that bits of your hair will end up in a wound? Layered hair is a very '70s or to some extent '80s look anyway, but that's another story.
