Hi guys,
This is my first post here, although I've been lurking for a while. For the record, I'm aiming for elf-length hair. Unfortunately my hair is brown, not blond!
Andrew
Welcome to the board!
Without trying to moan - please not this discussion again...
Hello, and welcome! Elf length hair? That´s original... how long is that?
Most modern-day (male) elves are depicted with shoulder-length to what women call bra-strap-length hair, some with mid-back, although elves bring to mind much longer hair.
Yup, I love mythology.
... the Elf people from "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy. Blond mid-back length I believe? Correct me if I am wrong in your meaning, Andrew. Also Welcome and Peace!
That's exactly right.
I still haven't got over the disappointment of learning that Orlando Bloom wore a $3000 wig. Real hair like that should exist somewhere :)
some elves io Lotr had brown hair!!!!!!
Liv Tyler's father character was elf and he had brown hair. Not to mention Liv Tyler herself had brown hair. Good point. Peace!
True - Elrond springs to mind.
Another advantage the male elves had is a complete lack of facial hair. I can never work out what to do with the head-hair and facial-hair junction at my ears. A post for another day perhaps!
I haven't shaved in a good two months now, and don't plan to until springtime.
But I >would< like to try a soul patch this spring, and that entails shaving the rest of my beard. Telling where my scalp hair ends and beard begins isn't all that easy, and a few times in the past I've ended up shaving into my hairline a little (thankfully well under a centimeter).
Hi Andrew,
That's a great article about long hair and religion.
I have always wanted to know about the Bible's perspective on long hair and you have thorougly analysed some good quotes that pop up in there.
QUOTE- "Consider the phrase "long hair". Long is a culturally relative term."
This is precisely correct. "Long hair" is only as long as culture/society percieve it to be. These days if your bangs reach your nose you might be considered a "long hair" but in the 70s or 80s it was probably atleast shoulder length to be considered long. It's exactly the same if you are not that tall but you are around very short people, it's going to make you look like a giant.
Thanks for clearing up those Christian perspectives, very good insight.
Welcome Andrew. So you have brown hair like Aragorn but you want it mid back length like Legolas. I don't see a problem with that. Long dark hair looks great too, don't let that be a stumbling block to growing you hair long.
I am not trying to open a religious can of worms debate here, but I think the apostle Paul was referring to his contemporary culture regarding long hair. Remember Paul was a Roman citizen, and correct hair length for Roman male citizens of the day was maybe 2 to 3 inches. (I have seen that statue of Augustus Caesar depicting him with hair 2 to 3 inches long.)
Over the years I have known of numerous spirit filled believers with long hair. God looks at the inside and not the outward appearance. Go ahead and grow your hair long.
Absalom
Yes. Although, unlike Aragorn I use shampoo....
Hi Absalom,
knowing a bit of biblical Greek, I can confirm that you are absolutely right, St. Paul was referring to the cultural context, and NOT to Christian doctrine.
You're absolutely right in encouraging male fellow Christians to grow their hair if that's what they want. Let's keep it up!

Hi,
I was raised as a Christian, on the KJV, and I always wondered why they only ever used the one verse against "men with long hair". I never actually had a full answer as to why it was wrong. And that's just it--it isn't wrong! I don't believe that we're judged for such things, unless, of course, it is some sort of idol to us.
I think part of the problem is that many of those people in the church I grew up in, are simply old folks who weren't raised that way. There just wasn't such a thing as men with long hair in their time.
Here's an interesting article, not sure if you have read it before, but this is what opened my eyes to the truth. :)

Must we really go through this again?
It is a defunct area of thought and at the end of the day personal belief and commitment must rule.
There is no answer - it is whatever you want it to be.
Hi guys,
Some things Paul and Jesus just couldn't agree on....
Bill
Mmmm...that must be the american interpretation.
John.B
Bill, your cartoon made me laugh loud! It really gets things into focus - hair length is pretty irrelevant for the Christian faith, the core is the belief in Christ's redemptive death on the cross and the resurrection. Well put!
How smart that Christ only revealed himself to Paul quite a bit later...
Hans-Uwe
ROFL!!! My brother and sister-in law would absolutely LOVE this cartoon!! (They are Atheists, so they get a kick out of anything outrageous like this)
Ahemmmm... OK, I'm gaining my composure now...
Very "interesting" Biblical interpretation, Bill!
