As most of you are aware the bit of damage on the back of my hair is caused by sun and UV ray exposure.
I have been conditioning very thoroughly and vigirously and my hair is coming back to life :)
As i don't want to repeat this problem again i am taking preventive measures to stop this reoccuring. Whenever i go out in the sun for a long period of time i wear a hat/bandana and try to cover all my hair under a ponytail or something.I don't like wearing hats all the time, i do enjoy letting my hair out every once in a while. Also in some contexts it isn't always most appropriate to be wearing hats all the time.
I was just wondering whether a leave in conditioner would work to protect the hair against sun damage. I am aware that it acts as like a 'shield' or protective layer over the hair shaft to prevent damage and drying out and also nourishes the hair etc. Do you think a leave in would be helpful against the sun?
If you guys are thinking i'm paranoid about my hair and that "it's only sun" keep in mind that it is still summer in Australia and the sun is very strong and emits harsh UV rays.
Going to the beach on holidays for 2 weeks didn't help this either, as you can imagine. :p
Anyways, thanks for responses.
To me there is only one sure way to avoid sun damage and that is
a hat. I know it is a pain sometimes (but hey, some of those
Austrailian hats are cool). I like to be outside a lot but
there are a lot of bad things waiting for your hair out there:
sun, dust, tree branches and so on. If you love your hair you
just need to be careful of it.
But once in a while of free hair shouldn't hurt too much.
I guess i will invest in one of those 'Aussie' hats because they do provide the best protection against the sun. Baseball caps are more 'rock' looking and 'cooler' but i usually have to wear them reversed to stop the hair at the back of my scalp getting damaged. So it's more of an issue of being practical and safe rather than the cosmetic value.
as they say; "...One picture is worth a thousand words..."
I live in the SouthWest US desert near Death Valley....
lots of heat , lots of sun and lots of hats !!
I am going to (Victoria) Australia in april/may. I better go buy a good hat lol.
peace
Melbourne (the capital of Victoria) is bloody damn boiling hot in December-February every year. Otheriwse it is usually quite cool to cold in March-May and September-October, and is freezing (by general Australian standars/comparisons) between June and September.
I certainly would give it a try. Sounds very logical that it would help in the protection of your hair from the Sun.
No way man ever. Long Hair is something to treasure, and when something goes wrong just about anyone would have concerns that unwanted damage may happen again.
yeah, a hat is a simple solution to the sun damage problem. and i dont think you are being paranoid or overobsessive about your hair. after someone has spent a good amount of time maintaining something they like of course they dont want it to be destroyed by something so preventable. good luck! =)
