I've been growing for nearly 3 years now, my hair is a good bit past my shoulders. Haven't had any cuts/trims along the way. I've pretty much always had problems with itching/flaking on my scalp, but recently it's become worse. I've tried using Selsun (sp?) Blue, Neutrogena T-gel, all to no avail.
I usually wash my hair every other day, and do not use the medicated shampoos every time I wash since I fear constant use could be damaging to my hair. Could anyone offer some suggestions? It's becoming a such a strong factor that I've been considering cutting my hair, and I really would rather keep it. Should I go to a dermatologist?
The other issue is hair loss, and time spent trying to not break/pull out more hair than necessary. Every time I wash my hair, there's usually a bit in the drain. I always wait until the hair is completely dry to comb (I usually only finger comb), and quite a lot of hair comes out then. Could this this problem also be attributed to the scalp issue? My hair is fairly curly, and frizzy.
Sorry for the length of this post, hopefully I can work through these problems though without having to resort to cutting it. I've waited too long to get my hair this length!
About the flaking:
I've noticied a bit of that with me, but I realized that I didn't have the correct method of shampooing. I always just used to put the shampoo in my hand and basically just smooth it over my head and rinse it out. However, I tried using my finger tips and just going back and forth, which eliminated the flakes.
Yeah i have the exact same problem with the hair loss..not the itch though(well a little not too much yet). But this is a very big concern for me, losing so much hair when just rinsing or combing...and my hair is just growing past the 7 month mark.
I recently started rinsing my hair more thoroughly and noticed much less itching and dandruff. I rinse it back, using my fingers to help wash out any residue, then let my hair hang forwards and rinse the back and sides, then I rinse it back again.
And if you're using conditioner, only apply it to the ends, don't put anywhere near your scalp, and rinse like crazy. Maybe try washing it less also.
If you do some searches on the 'net you can find some natural remedies like using vinegar.
I've always had problems as well, with flaking. Until a few weeks ago I took my friends advice and bought some castile soap. It's a all natrual soap that dosnt damage your hair at all and since ive been using it i've barley had any flaking.
Hope that helps.
Does this also decrease hair falling out? because i notice my hair falls out even when i touch my hair as gently as possible...
Depends. If you wash your hair alot with shampoo you are stripping your hair of all it's natrual oils. So the hair is not healthy at all. All hair is dead, so what is there to protect it from everday wear and tear. The oils act as a shield and prevent from breaking and split ends. So if you but one of these natrual soaps such as "castile" the soap dosn't stip you hair from its natrual oils.
Hope That Helps:)
Lest we forget, scalp problems are skin problems, not hair problems.
I had trouble with itching (but not flaking) for years. When I switched to a conditioner without silicones there was a dramatic reduction in itchiness. It wasn't an overnight success, it took a month or two. It made sense since I also have to be careful with soaps and I'm allergic to anti-persperants (I have to use old-fashioned deoderants instead).
I can't remember which chemicals on the label to avoid. Perhaps someone else can chime in.
What then stopped the problem completely is switching combs and brushes. The plastic ones have sharper edges and ends, and rough spots from the injection-molding manufacturing process. This apparently was irritating the scalp.
I use a boar's hair bristle brush now and horn combs. The combs are machined and the edges and ends of the tines rounded. Both have been well worth the extra money and additional care they require.
If you can't find such things, email me. Last time I posted the link it got moderated.
