My Bill pointed this article out to me both for the longhaired man and since he had shown me part of Beckwourth Trail as we traveled last weekend. What stood out for me was the description of Beckwourth in the eyes of a ten year old girl in a wagon train he led in 1851.
"We were guided by the famous scout, James Beckwourth, who was a historical figure, and to my mind one of the most beautiful creatures who ever lived. He was rather dark and wore his hair in two long braids, twisted with colored cord that gave him a picturesque appearance. He wore a leather coat and moccasins and rode a horse without a saddle."
Long hair does a lot to add to an adventuresome, romantic perception of a man. Still does today if romance novel covers are any judge.
Smiling at the thought of all the "beautiful creatures" in the world,
Elizabeth
